You can let an AI agent change a website more safely by keeping its work out of production, limiting what it can access, reviewing the exact changes, and promoting them only after testing. The key is to treat previews, checkpoints, and permissions as separate safeguards: none alone guarantees that a live site or connected service cannot be affected.
Use a workflow that separates editing from publishing
A safe setup makes the agent’s edits inspectable before they reach the live site. For a code-based site, that usually means an isolated branch or worktree, a preview deployment, and a human-controlled merge into the production branch. For a CMS or website builder, use a draft or branch only if it is genuinely separate from the published page.

Confirm which branch or state serves production, what data and credentials the preview can reach, and what action actually publishes. A preview URL is useful for checking appearance and behavior, but it is not proof that the agent lacks production access or that its changes cannot publish directly.

Ask for a plan before granting write access
Start with a small task and ask the agent to identify the files or pages it expects to change, the steps it intends to take, and any external services it needs. If the tool offers a read-only planning mode, use it first. Netlify describes an Ask mode that does not edit files, run commands, deploy, or configure settings; its Build mode can make changes and provides a preview for review. The available modes and behavior are specific to that product, so check the current configuration.

Keep the change isolated
Use a separate branch, worktree, draft, or platform preview rather than letting the agent edit the live production state. Netlify documents agent runs on branches and deploy previews, with changes published when a pull request merges into the production branch. That merge is a deliberate promotion point, provided the site is actually configured to publish from that branch.
Website-builder workflows can have different limits. Webflow documents page branches for an isolated page-editing workflow, but page branches require an Enterprise plan. Verify that your plan supports the isolation you intend to use.

Limit the agent’s authority
Give the agent only the permissions the task needs. An agent changing page copy should not automatically receive access to deployment settings, secrets, unrelated repositories, or production credentials. Protect sensitive files and settings, and use available sandboxing and trust controls to constrain commands and external access.
Recommended Free Tools
- Use a distinct agent credential where supported instead of sharing an administrator or human account.
- Require approval for production writes, destructive operations, and actions that affect external services when the tool offers approval rules.
- Check whether the agent can run terminal commands, make network requests, or invoke connected tools, not just edit files.
- Keep secrets out of files and contexts the agent can read unless access is essential to the task.
VS Code documents controls such as approval rules, sensitive-file protections, sandboxing, and trust boundaries. Prisma documents a separate agent credential with approval by default for production or destructive actions. These are examples of available controls, not universal defaults: inspect the settings of the specific agent and site before enabling writes.

Review the diff, then test the preview
Before merging or publishing, inspect the actual diff rather than relying on the agent’s summary. Review source code and content, but also look for changes to configuration, build scripts, deployment settings, permissions, and files unrelated to the request. VS Code’s guidance describes reviewing agent edits through diffs, Source Control, and pull requests, and warns that generated code can be incorrect or insecure.
- Check scope: confirm every changed file or page is relevant to the task and investigate unexpected additions or deletions.
- Check risk: scrutinize authentication, access controls, secrets, dependencies, redirects, environment configuration, and deployment-related changes.
- Run the project’s checks: use its existing tests, build, lint, or other validation steps; a successful preview alone does not show that every behavior is correct.
- Exercise the preview: check the changed page or feature on the preview environment, including relevant mobile layouts, links, forms, and error states.
- Get an appropriate human review: have someone familiar with the site review consequential changes before integration.
Do not assume the agent’s own tests or explanation replace review. The person approving the change is responsible for deciding whether it is correct and safe to ship.

Verify how the platform publishes changes
Publishing behavior varies by tool and configuration. GitCMS documents both review-before-publish and direct-publish modes: in direct-publish mode, writes may commit to the publishing branch and go live through its deployment pipeline. Before granting write access, determine which mode is active and what the agent’s write action triggers.
Netlify’s documented Build workflow uses a pull request merge into the production branch as the publishing step. That is a useful control only if the production branch and deploy settings are correct and the agent cannot bypass the review path. For any CMS or builder, establish whether “save,” “update,” or “publish” changes a draft, a branch, or the live page.

Plan recovery for more than files
Use version history or Git so you can restore and inspect code changes. But a workspace checkpoint is not a universal undo button. VS Code explicitly cautions that restoring workspace files does not reverse completed terminal commands, network requests, deployments, or changes made in external services.
Before the agent starts, decide how to recover from the kinds of failure the task could cause: reverting a merge or redeploying a prior version may address site files, while a changed database, sent message, modified account, or external API action may require a separate recovery process. Limit access to those systems and require approval for irreversible actions wherever possible.
Netlify documents staging, deploy previews, and rollback capabilities, but the exact recovery coverage depends on the deployment and connected systems. A rollback of a site deployment should not be assumed to undo external side effects.

Before choosing or configuring a website-editing agent, answer these questions for the particular site and plan:
- Does the agent edit an isolated branch or draft, or can it write to the publishing state?
- Is there a preview and an inspectable diff before promotion?
- Which files, credentials, terminal commands, and external tools can it access?
- Can production writes and destructive actions be gated behind human approval?
- What does rollback restore, and which external effects remain untouched?
- Are the needed isolation or review features available on your plan?
Vendor documentation establishes particular workflows, not a guarantee that any platform is safe in every configuration. Confirm the current behavior and plan limits before enabling agent writes.
