The least disruptive way to leave the Windows Insider Beta Channel is to wait until your PC is running a production build, then opt out at Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program by selecting Stop getting preview builds. If your installed preview is newer than the public release and you need to return to stable Windows 11 sooner, you may need to restore the PC with a Windows 11 recovery image instead.
Check whether your Windows 11 build is stable
The Settings opt-out is intended for a device already using a production build. Check the installed build at Settings > System > About, or run winver and note the build number. Microsoft explains the opt-out and recovery routes in its Windows Insider Program guidance.

Choose the route that fits your installed build
| Route | When it fits | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Stop preview builds in Settings | The PC is already on a production build | Microsoft says opting out on a production build does not lose information. Follow the on-screen prompts to stop receiving preview builds. |
| Wait, then opt out | Your preview build is ahead of the public release and you can wait | Opt out when the next production or publicly released build is available. |
| Restore with a Windows 11 recovery image | You need to return to the device’s original operating system without waiting for production to catch up | Back up information you want to keep, then follow the recovery-image instructions for your specific device. There is no single recovery-image procedure in Microsoft’s guidance that applies to every PC. |
| Use Windows Recovery’s Go back | The option is still available after an upgrade and you want to return to an earlier build | It usually appears for 10 days after upgrading; personal files are kept, but apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and changes made in Settings are removed. It does not remove the device from Insider. |
Opt out from a production build
- Confirm the installed build using Settings > System > About or
winver. - Open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program.
- Select Stop getting preview builds and follow the prompts.
Microsoft says opting out while using a production build does not lose information. The setting stops preview builds; it does not itself install an earlier stable build if the PC is still on a newer Insider version.
If the Insider build is ahead of public Windows 11
If you can wait, Microsoft’s guidance is to opt out with the next production or publicly released build. If waiting is not suitable, use a Windows 11 recovery image to restore the device to its original operating system, following the instructions for that PC. Back up any information you want to keep before restoring. Recovery-image steps and program-enrollment state can be device-specific, so consult the manufacturer’s applicable instructions.

Why “Go back” does not leave the Insider Program
Windows Recovery’s Go back option is a separate rollback feature, not an Insider opt-out. Microsoft says the option is usually available for 10 days after an upgrade, though availability can vary by device. It keeps personal files but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses Settings changes made since then. Microsoft explicitly warns that “Going back to an earlier build won’t remove you from the Insider Program.” If another preview is ready, it may install again. See Microsoft’s guidance on going back to a previous version of Windows.
