To leave SteamVR Beta, open Steam’s Library, right-click SteamVR, choose Properties, open Game Versions & Betas, and set the participation menu to None (or the equivalent no-beta option). Steam will restore the current public branch and may download replacement files.
This changes SteamVR’s own branch, not the separate Steam Client beta. If SteamVR still crashes, fails to start, or tracks incorrectly afterward, use Steam’s file-verification and troubleshooting steps rather than assuming the branch change alone will fix the problem.

Leave the SteamVR beta in five steps
- Open Steam and select Library. Use the desktop Steam client where your SteamVR installation is listed. The setting is attached to the SteamVR library item, not to a headset manufacturer’s application or to Steam’s account page.
- Find SteamVR. Locate the SteamVR entry in your library. If the library has a search box, searching for SteamVR can be quicker than scrolling through the list.
- Open Properties. Right-click the SteamVR entry and select Properties. This opens settings for the SteamVR application rather than settings for the Steam client as a whole.
- Select Game Versions & Betas. Steam’s SteamVR support instructions place the beta selector in this section: SteamVR Beta.
- Choose None. Select None, or the menu entry that clearly means no beta participation, then close the Properties window. Steam’s general beta-depot guidance says that choosing None returns a title to its current public version: CS2 – Opting into Beta depots.
Steam’s SteamVR page identifies the opt-in branch as “Beta – SteamVR Beta Update.” You are not selecting that entry when leaving the beta; you are replacing it with the no-beta choice. If the wording in your client is slightly different, choose the option that indicates the public or stable branch.

Before you change the setting
Close any active SteamVR session before judging the result of the branch change. You can make the selection while Steam is open, but Steam must be able to process the changed depot and install whatever files belong to the public branch. If a headset application or VR game is running, exit it first so the update is not competing with a live SteamVR process.

It is also useful to note the symptom that caused you to try the beta: for example, whether SteamVR would not start, whether the headset was not detected, or whether tracking became unreliable. Retesting the same symptom after the update gives you a meaningful comparison. A different scene or game can introduce separate variables and make it harder to tell whether the branch change mattered.
What happens after you select None
Steam may download public-branch files
Changing branches can require Steam to replace files with the versions used by the current public release. The general Steam beta-depot instructions explicitly warn that opting out requires downloading the current public files. That guidance is not a SteamVR-specific download estimate, so there is no reliable SteamVR file-size or time figure to quote.
Watch Steam’s normal download or update activity and allow the operation to finish before launching SteamVR. Interrupting the process can leave the application partly updated, which makes a later failure difficult to interpret. If Steam pauses because of another queued download, let the SteamVR operation complete before deciding that the branch selector did not work.
The download is not evidence that something went wrong. It is the expected consequence of moving from one depot or branch to another when the local files differ. The amount of data and the elapsed time can vary, so avoid relying on a fixed size or duration. When the update is complete, reopen SteamVR’s Properties if you want to confirm the menu still shows the no-beta choice.
The stable channel is not a guaranteed bug fix
Leaving the beta puts SteamVR on the public branch; it does not guarantee that a particular crash, headset-detection problem, frame-time issue, or controller fault will disappear. A problem that exists in the public build, in a graphics driver, in a headset runtime, or in another component can remain after the branch switch.
Think of the change as one controlled test. If the problem disappears, the beta branch may have been involved, but that result does not identify which beta change caused it. If the problem remains, you have ruled out the branch selection as the only explanation, but you have not ruled out every SteamVR, driver, or hardware issue.
Start SteamVR after the branch update
Once Steam has finished changing the installed files, start SteamVR and reproduce the symptom that led you to leave the beta. Note whether SteamVR starts, whether the headset is detected, and whether the original fault is still present. Those observations determine the next troubleshooting step.

Do not use a successful launch by itself as proof that every VR function is working. Check the part that was failing: detection, tracking, play-space data, responsiveness, or a particular application. Conversely, do not conclude that the rollback failed merely because a separate game or device still has an unrelated problem.
SteamVR beta and Steam Client beta are different settings
Steam has separate beta controls for the SteamVR application and for the Steam client itself. Changing one does not automatically change the other.

If your goal is only to return SteamVR to its stable channel, change the SteamVR entry in Library and leave the Steam Client beta setting alone. Change the client setting only when you also want the Steam application itself to stop receiving client-beta updates.
This distinction matters when diagnosing a problem. If you change the Steam Client beta setting instead of SteamVR’s setting, SteamVR may remain on its beta branch. If you change both at once, you create two software-channel changes and lose a clear way to tell which one affected the result. Make the SteamVR change first unless you have a separate reason to alter the client channel.

How to confirm that SteamVR is no longer opted in
- Return to Library after the branch update has completed.
- Right-click SteamVR and reopen Properties.
- Open Game Versions & Betas and inspect the participation menu.
- Confirm that it shows None or another no-beta/public-branch label, rather than Beta – SteamVR Beta Update.
- Launch SteamVR and check the behavior that prompted the change.
Steam can revise menu wording and layout. The important checks are that you are editing SteamVR’s Properties, that you are in Game Versions & Betas, and that the selected value means no beta. If the selector still shows the beta branch, repeat the change and allow Steam to finish processing the update.
A branch label and the installed files should agree after Steam completes its update. If the menu says None but Steam is still downloading, wait for the operation to finish before testing. If the menu returns to the beta label, the selection was not retained; select the no-beta option again and check that Steam remains online long enough to apply it.
Troubleshoot SteamVR if the problem remains
Steam’s SteamVR Troubleshooting index lists several remedies. Choose the branch that matches your symptom instead of applying every action at once. Working in a consistent order preserves useful information about what changed.

SteamVR will not start or closes immediately
- Restart SteamVR. Exit the current SteamVR session and start it again after the public-branch files have been installed. A restart confirms that the newly installed files are actually being loaded.
- Verify SteamVR tool files. Use Steam’s file-verification command for the SteamVR tool from its Steam properties. Verification checks the local installation and replaces files Steam identifies as missing or damaged. Run it after the branch update has completed, not while the depot is still changing.
- Restart Windows. A full restart can clear a stuck VR service, driver state, or device connection that survived closing SteamVR.
- Check drivers. Steam’s troubleshooting guidance specifically points to checking the relevant hardware and graphics drivers. Confirm that your headset, graphics hardware, and other VR peripherals are using supported, functioning drivers before drawing a conclusion from the beta change.
If the failure began during the branch transition, first confirm that Steam reports the update as complete and that the selector remains on None. Then perform verification and a Windows restart. This separates an incomplete installation from a problem that persists in the public branch.
The headset is detected, but tracking or the play area is wrong
- Rerun Room Setup when the floor, boundaries, orientation, or play area is incorrect. Steam lists rerunning Room Setup as a troubleshooting option when it is relevant to the symptom.
- Restart SteamVR after Room Setup and test the same application or scene again. Keep the test consistent so you can tell whether the play-space correction addressed the original fault.
- Check drivers if tracking remains wrong. A branch rollback does not replace every device or graphics driver, so a persistent tracking symptom may have a cause outside SteamVR’s beta selection.
Room Setup is appropriate for incorrect boundaries or orientation, not as a universal remedy for every startup failure. If SteamVR cannot remain open long enough to complete it, return to the startup and file-verification steps instead.
SteamVR is responsive enough to open but behaves erratically
- Restart SteamVR and Windows before changing additional software settings.
- Verify the SteamVR tool files, then test again.
- Check drivers and remove obvious conflicts from recently changed hardware or driver installations.
- If the fault persists, use SteamVR’s safe mode as a diagnostic step. Steam describes safe mode as preventing some third-party drivers and components from loading. That makes it useful for determining whether an external component is involved, but it can also disable software or hardware features that SteamVR normally needs.
Use safe mode as a diagnosis, not a permanent cure
Safe mode is most useful when SteamVR starts normally only after third-party components are excluded. Compare the result with a normal launch, then identify the driver or component that is being suppressed. If the symptom is unchanged in safe mode, the cause may not be one of those third-party components.
Because safe mode intentionally prevents some components from loading, missing features in that mode do not automatically indicate a new SteamVR defect. Record what changes between normal and safe-mode launches. That comparison can help Steam Support distinguish a SteamVR branch problem from an interaction with a third-party driver or component.
If the beta selector is missing or does not change
Make sure you opened SteamVR’s Properties
The beta control is attached to the SteamVR library entry. Opening Steam’s global Settings window takes you to Steam Client beta controls instead, which cannot opt SteamVR in or out of its application branch.

Steam’s official SteamVR instructions identify Game Versions & Betas as the location. If your client uses a slightly revised label, look for the section that lists versions, branches, or beta participation for the selected application.
Interpret the choices rather than relying on position
Dropdown entries can be reordered or renamed in a client update. Select the entry that explicitly means no beta or public release. Do not choose “Beta – SteamVR Beta Update” when your goal is to leave the test branch.

Allow Steam to finish updating
A branch change may not be reflected in the installed files immediately. Keep Steam open long enough for its update process to complete, then reopen SteamVR’s Properties and verify the selected branch again.
Do not infer the branch from a single symptom
A crash, missing headset, or tracking error does not prove that SteamVR is still using the beta. Confirm the selector directly. Conversely, seeing None does not prove that every file or driver is healthy; use verification and the symptom-specific troubleshooting steps if the problem continues.
