If your phone shows an Android Recovery menu, choose Reboot system now—if that option is visible—to restart without selecting a data-wipe command. Use the menu’s displayed controls; on Google Pixel recovery screens, volume buttons move through options and Power selects one. Avoid Wipe data/factory reset and similar erase or reset entries if you want to keep your files and settings.
Which Recovery Mode option should you choose?
Reboot system now asks the phone to start normally; it is the appropriate menu choice when you simply want to leave Recovery Mode while preserving data. Menu labels and button behavior can differ by manufacturer and model, so follow what your screen displays rather than assuming every Android phone uses the same controls. Google’s Pixel recovery instructions describe using the volume buttons to scroll and Power to select.

| Menu choice | What it does | Suitable for leaving Recovery Mode without data loss? |
|---|---|---|
| Reboot system now | Attempts to restart the phone normally. | Yes, if that exact option is present. |
| Wipe data/factory reset or a similar erase/reset choice | Erases user data as part of a factory reset. | No. It is destructive, not a routine exit command. |
Google states, “A factory reset erases all your data from your phone.” Its Pixel recovery guidance also distinguishes the reboot choice from the data-wipe path. Samsung similarly says, “A factory data reset restores your phone to its factory settings and removes all personal data.” Samsung’s reset instructions explain the effect for Galaxy phones and tablets.

How to exit safely
- Read the screen before pressing a button. Look for Reboot system now. Do not select entries containing “wipe,” “erase,” or “factory reset” when preserving data is the priority.
- Navigate using the controls indicated for your device. On the documented Pixel recovery screen, use volume buttons to highlight the reboot option and Power to select it. Follow your phone’s instructions if its controls differ.
- Wait for the normal startup. If the phone starts Android, the Recovery menu has been exited. Seeing the menu by itself does not mean a factory reset has occurred.
If the menu is frozen, blank, or keeps returning
The expected reboot option is missing or the menu will not respond
Do not guess at a force-restart key combination: the available instructions do not establish one universal button sequence for Android phones. Remove a case or accessory if it may be holding a button down, then check the exact manufacturer support page for your phone model. Google’s general Android troubleshooting guidance notes that “Settings can vary by phone. For more info, contact your device manufacturer.” Google Android Help directs users to device-specific guidance.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).

For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

The phone repeatedly returns to Recovery
A repeated return is a separate fault to diagnose, not a reason to try menu options at random. The cause and remedy depend on the device; consult the manufacturer’s model-specific support or an authorized repair service. Rebooting is a safe exit choice, but it cannot be promised to repair an operating-system, storage, or hardware fault.
When a factory reset is being considered for another problem
A factory reset is not the same as rebooting out of Recovery Mode. Consider it only as a separate troubleshooting step after weighing the data loss. If the phone remains accessible, back up first. Google says data stored in a Google Account may be restorable, but apps and their data are uninstalled by a reset. Samsung warns that personal information may not be recoverable. On Samsung devices, Factory Reset Protection may also require the previously registered Google Account after a reset performed by a method other than resetting through Settings; make sure you know the relevant account credentials before proceeding.

Google’s Pixel reset guidance recommends at least 70% battery charge before a factory reset and estimates that the process can take up to an hour. Those figures apply to Pixel factory resets, not to the simple reboot procedure described above. Google Pixel Phone Help provides the current preparation steps.
Pixel-specific software repair and service options
Update & Software Repair tool
For a separate Pixel software problem, Google’s Update & Software Repair tool may allow a manual update that resolves the issue without a factory reset. Google specifies a computer and USB cable for this route; it is intended for supported Pixel devices, not as a necessary step to leave an ordinary Recovery menu. Check the current Pixel repair instructions for compatibility and procedure before using it.

Repair Mode before service
On eligible Pixel phones, Repair Mode lets a technician service the device using a clean Android OS in a secure partition, without requiring a factory reset. Google’s eligibility guidance applies to Pixel devices running Android 14 with the December 2023 update or later and at least 2 GB of free space. It is a service privacy feature, not a general Android Recovery exit command. See Google’s Repair Mode instructions to confirm eligibility.
