SAP lists elementary knowledge of a modern language such as Python as a prerequisite. Your main learning curve is ABAP’s syntax and development workflow, SAP’s data and business-object conventions, and the language version supported by the system you want to use.
What your Python and SQL skills already cover
Your programming background gives you a head start on variables, control flow, breaking work into methods, classes, and debugging habits. SQL experience also helps with relational thinking and query concepts. SAP’s beginner course explicitly accepts elementary knowledge of Python or another modern language as a prerequisite, so there is no need to pause for another introductory programming course.

That head start does not eliminate ABAP-specific learning. You will still need to become comfortable with ABAP syntax and typing, structures and internal tables, repository objects and packages, and Eclipse-based development tools. SQL is only one part of SAP application development: business objects, EML, and RAP introduce additional concepts and workflows.

Choose the ABAP environment for your goal
Before setting up tools, identify the kind of SAP system relevant to your work. SAP distinguishes the ADT project type by target: ABAP Projects connect to on-premise systems or SAP S/4HANA Private Cloud, while ABAP Cloud Projects connect to SAP BTP ABAP or SAP S/4HANA Public Cloud. The connection affects which language version and APIs are available.

SAP describes Standard ABAP as unrestricted, while ABAP for Cloud Development and ABAP for Key Users are restricted language versions. ABAP for Cloud Development relies on released SAP APIs and extension points. SAP says ABAP Cloud is mandatory on SAP BTP and S/4HANA Cloud public edition; in private edition and on-premise it is not mandatory, but is strongly recommended. Follow the version used by your target system and job rather than treating ABAP as a single uniform language.
SAP’s learning exercises use ABAP Development Tools (ADT) for Eclipse and connect to an ABAP system. Cloud exercises use an ABAP environment in SAP BTP, with project and service-key setup described in the course material. Current access, account, and trial arrangements can change, so check SAP’s current setup guidance before relying on a particular route.
Follow a practical learning sequence
1. Start with SAP’s beginner course
Learning Basic ABAP Programming is marked beginner and is designed for learners who already have elementary programming knowledge. Its topics include the ABAP environment, basic techniques, object-oriented programs, ABAP SQL, structured data, complex internal tables, business objects, EML, and a simple RAP application. Use it as your structured path instead of repeating general programming fundamentals.

Install and use Eclipse with ABAP Development Tools, then connect to a training or development ABAP system appropriate to your deployment target. Reading about ABAP is useful, but meaningful practice requires a system where you can create and run objects. Follow the course’s setup instructions for its BTP environment or select the project type that matches your own system.

3. Run a small first application
SAP’s introductory lesson runs a Hello World example through a class implementing IF_OO_ADT_CLASSRUN. Use this as an early milestone: create the class in ADT, activate it, run it, and inspect the console output. This introduces the editor and activation/run workflow before you take on application architecture.
4. Learn ABAP fundamentals, then data handling
Work through data types and variables, conditional logic, runtime errors, and debugging. Then move to ABAP SQL, structured data, and internal tables before deepening your object-oriented programming. These topics are explicitly included in SAP’s beginner material and build on your existing programming and relational-data knowledge without assuming ABAP behaves exactly like Python or a standalone SQL client.
5. Progress from queries to business applications
Use ABAP SQL to read data, then learn how SAP business objects and EML handle business-object interactions and updates. Continue to RAP for end-to-end application and service development. SAP presents RAP as a model for SAP HANA-optimized OData services, including Fiori applications and Web APIs.
6. Finish with a small complete exercise
As a capstone, create a small business-data scenario: read and filter records with ABAP SQL, represent the results with internal tables, implement a business object, and expose a simple RAP service. Treat this as a suggested project scope; adapt it to the system and APIs available in your environment.

The basic course is the most direct starting point. The broader Acquiring Core ABAP Skills learning journey extends toward modern ABAP development, RAP, and Clean Core. A separate ABAP-on-BTP beginner course is another route when your target is SAP BTP; verify that its content and system context fit your goal.
On SAP Learning pages retrieved in 2026, the basic course was listed as 17 hr 29 min with eight units, and the separate ABAP-on-BTP beginner course as 6 hr 28 min with six units. These are course-page estimates and unit counts, not a forecast of how long an individual learner will need. Course listings and formats can change.
Books can serve as optional references, but check the edition’s coverage of the ABAP version, RAP, and deployment model you need before buying. A title focused on older ABAP may not cover cloud restrictions or modern application patterns adequately. SAP also lists instructor-led and partner-delivered training; compare the curriculum and hands-on system access with your self-paced options.
