How to Learn Magic: The Gathering Before Playing a Universes Beyond Set

Learn the shared Magic rules first, then add Universes Beyond mechanics. This guide compares Arena, Foundations, starter kits, and local teaching options so you can reach your first themed game without buying the wrong product.

Learn Magic’s shared rules first, then learn the crossover set. Start with a tutorial or guided beginner game, practice with a complete deck, confirm the format your group uses, and only afterward study the Universes Beyond cards and mechanics. This order prevents the setting, keywords, and unfamiliar card references from obscuring the game’s basic turn-and-combat loop.

What you need to learn before a Universes Beyond game

Every Magic: The Gathering set changes the cards, story, and sometimes the terminology printed on cards, but the underlying game structure remains the same. You still draw from a library, play lands for mana, cast spells, attack, block, and try to reduce an opponent’s life total to zero (or satisfy another stated victory condition). A Universes Beyond set adds a fictional setting and set-specific abilities to that foundation; it does not replace the foundation.

That is why opening crossover cards before learning the ordinary game can feel harder than it should. A card may mention a new keyword, a character, or a mechanic that makes sense only after you understand card types, timing, combat, and the battlefield. Learn those shared concepts first, then use the crossover’s cards as examples.

Wizards of the Coast’s official How to Play Magic: The Gathering guide organizes the essentials around the play area, reading cards, card types, casting spells, turns, combat, and ending a game. It also points beginners toward a keyword glossary after the basics. That sequence is a useful syllabus: understand the loop before trying to memorize every word that can appear on a card.

#1 Best Overall

The recommended learning sequence

  1. Orient yourself to the table and cards. Learn the library (your draw pile), hand, battlefield, graveyard, exile zone, life total, mana, and the text areas on a card. Identify lands, creatures, instants, sorceries, artifacts, enchantments, and planeswalkers at a recognition level before worrying about advanced interactions.
  2. Learn the turn and combat loop. Practice untapping, upkeep, drawing, playing a land, casting spells, attacking, blocking, and ending the turn. You do not need to know every phase nuance on the first attempt; you do need to know when you can act and how combat resolves.
  3. Play a guided first game. Use Magic Arena’s tutorial, a guided tabletop product, or an instructor-led event. A guided game lets you see the sequence repeatedly instead of trying to infer it from a pile of cards.
  4. Repeat with a ready-to-play deck. Play several short games with the same deck. Repetition builds familiarity with mana costs, combat math, and common card layouts far faster than opening random boosters.
  5. Choose the format with your opponent. Formats determine player count, which cards are legal, and how decks are constructed. Confirm those rules before buying anything.
  6. Add the crossover-specific layer. Read the chosen Universes Beyond set’s card gallery, mechanics notes, and any product insert only after the shared game loop feels ordinary. Then play the themed decks and look up unfamiliar keywords as they appear.

Learn the physical game before memorizing card text

Know where information lives

Start by identifying a card’s name, mana cost, type line, rules text, power and toughness (for creatures), and any loyalty or other characteristic relevant to its type. The artwork and flavor text help with the setting, but they do not determine what a card can do. Your hand is hidden from the opponent; cards on the battlefield are normally visible. The graveyard is a face-up discard pile, while the library stays randomized and face down.

Understand lands and mana

Lands generally provide the mana used to cast spells. In a normal turn you may play one land, while spells can be cast when you have the required mana and the timing permits. A land is not automatically a spell, and playing a land is different from casting one. This distinction is a common source of beginner errors, so say “play a land” and “cast a spell” as separate actions while practicing.

Separate card types by job

  • Creatures can attack and block and often have abilities that matter on the battlefield.
  • Instants can generally be cast during an opponent’s turn when you have priority.
  • Sorceries usually resolve during your own main phase when the stack is otherwise clear.
  • Artifacts and enchantments are permanents that remain on the battlefield after resolving unless removed or otherwise affected.
  • Planeswalkers enter with loyalty and have activated abilities with usage restrictions printed on the card.

You do not need to memorize a comprehensive rules document at this stage. Learn what each card type normally does, then consult the official rules or glossary when a card creates an edge case.

Practice the turn, priority, and combat loop

A practical first-turn script

  1. Untap your tapped permanents.
  2. Resolve upkeep abilities, if any.
  3. Draw a card.
  4. Play a land if you have one and have not played your land for the turn.
  5. Cast spells or activate abilities when allowed.
  6. Move to combat, declare attackers, and give the opponent a chance to respond.
  7. Declare blockers if the opponent chooses to block; resolve combat damage and resulting effects.
  8. Continue your second main phase, then discard to your hand-size limit if required and end the turn.

This is a learning script rather than a replacement for the comprehensive turn structure. It gives new players a reliable checklist while they learn when the game pauses for choices. When a card or ability is placed on the stack, players normally receive an opportunity to respond before it resolves. If both players pass without adding anything, the top object resolves, and the process repeats.

Combat decisions to rehearse

On your turn, choose which creatures attack. The opponent then chooses blockers, if any. A blocked creature normally deals combat damage to its blocker rather than to the defending player, unless an ability changes that result. Compare power and toughness, account for counters and temporary effects, and announce the order of multiple blockers when the rules require it. It is fine to pause and calculate; accuracy matters more than speed while learning.

How a game ends

A player normally loses when their life total reaches zero or when they must draw from an empty library. Cards can create alternate wins or losses, and a player can concede. Treat those outcomes as exceptions to learn when they appear instead of trying to catalog every possibility in advance.

Choose a first learning route

Route Best suited to What it provides Important limitation
Magic Arena tutorial Someone learning alone or wanting repeatable practice A digital tutorial and guided introduction recommended by Wizards of the Coast Device, account, platform, and regional availability can vary; no independent user-experience claim is established here.
Foundations Beginner Box A beginner who wants a theme-neutral tabletop foundation and a friend to play with Two hands-on guided deck experiences, a reference booklet, playmats, and bonus decks for jump-in play, according to Wizards’ product page It teaches core Magic rather than a particular Universes Beyond setting.
Universes Beyond Starter Kit A beginner motivated by crossover characters and ready to play with one partner The official FINAL FANTASY Starter Kit listing specifies two ready-to-play 60-card decks, a Magic play guide, tokens, turn-order and attack/block reference cards, and two Arena code cards This is a FINAL FANTASY example, not a specification for every Universes Beyond product. It assumes a two-player game.
Magic Academy event Someone who learns best with an instructor or local group Wizards’ program describes a guided in-store event with decks or a Beginner Box experience, a brochure, and a pocket reference card Events are local and time-sensitive, so check current listings before planning around one.

Can you start with a Universes Beyond Starter Kit?

Yes, if you have an opponent and are willing to learn the shared rules while using a preconstructed product. The FINAL FANTASY Starter Kit is designed as a concrete two-player entry point: its two ready-to-play 60-card decks let two people begin without deck construction, and its printed guide, tokens, and combat references reduce the need to search for basic reminders. The product listing says the two included Arena code cards can also unlock both decks digitally, subject to account and platform access.

Starting with a themed kit is especially sensible when the crossover is the reason you are interested in Magic. Familiar characters can make the first games more motivating, but the kit does not remove the need to learn lands, mana, turns, combat, and card timing. Read the guide, play the first game slowly, and treat unusual set mechanics as optional lessons rather than prerequisites for understanding the entire game.

If you do not yet have a regular opponent, a theme-neutral route may be easier. The Foundations Beginner Box is built around guided learning and includes bonus decks for playing with a friend. Wizards’ Foundations feature describes ten Jumpstart decks in the Beginner Box experience. That makes it a foundation product, not evidence that every Universes Beyond set uses the same deck count or teaching format.

Match the product to the format you will actually play

Two-player play

Two-player games are the natural fit for a two-deck starter kit. Ask your intended opponent whether they want a beginner-level game, whether they expect a particular constructed format, and whether they are happy to use the cards supplied in the kit. A starter deck may be playable immediately without being legal in every organized format.

Commander and multiplayer

Wizards’ format overview describes Commander as a multiplayer format. Commander decks have different construction rules from ordinary two-player starter decks, including a larger deck and a designated commander. Do not buy a Commander product simply because it has a crossover theme if your planned lesson is a two-player tutorial; first confirm that your group plays Commander and can explain its additional rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Standard and other constructed formats

Wizards describes Standard as a two-player format with its own card-pool and deck-construction requirements. Legality changes over time, so check the current format information before assuming that a Universes Beyond card can be used in a particular event. For a first lesson at home, matching the product and opponent is more important than optimizing for future tournament legality.

  • Endless Gameplay: With a vast array of characters, abilities, and strategies, the possibilities for deck-building are endless.

Boosters are not lessons

Boosters are useful for expanding a collection or participating in a limited format, but they do not guarantee two balanced, ready-to-play decks. Wizards’ Foundations guidance positions the Beginner Box as a first experience and Play Boosters as more appropriate once a player knows what they like. If your immediate goal is to learn, prioritize a guided product or complete decks over random packs.

A first-game procedure that minimizes confusion

  1. Prepare only the essentials. Use two complete decks, a way to track life totals, and the supplied tokens or counters. Remove unrelated cards and accessories from the table.
  2. Read both deck introductions. Identify each deck’s main plan in one sentence, such as attacking with creatures or generating value from a particular card type.
  3. Shuffle and draw opening hands. If the product includes a mulligan explanation, follow it. Otherwise, use the standard rules explanation supplied with the product or official guide rather than improvising.
  4. Play with cards face up when teaching. A teacher can explain why a land was played or why an attack was declined. Open information during a lesson is more useful than pretending both players already know the strategy.
  5. Announce phases aloud. Say “combat,” “declare attackers,” and “declare blockers.” This gives both players a chance to make legal choices and exposes timing misunderstandings early.
  6. Pause for unfamiliar words. Look up one keyword or ability at a time. Resolve the current card, then continue; do not stop the entire game to study every mechanic in the set.
  7. Reset and play again. After the first game, switch decks or roles and repeat. The second game usually reveals different questions about mana, blocking, and timing.

How to study the Universes Beyond set after the basics

Start with the set’s recurring mechanics

Read the set’s official mechanics overview and keyword explanations after you can follow a normal turn. Focus on mechanics that appear repeatedly in the decks you own. Write a one-line reminder for each unfamiliar keyword, but keep the card itself as the authority for costs, targets, restrictions, and exceptions.

Sort cards by when they matter

  • During your turn: identify cards that improve an attack, create a permanent, or require a main-phase timing window.
  • During combat: mark creatures and tricks that alter power, toughness, blocking, or damage.
  • During either player’s turn: separate instants and activated abilities so you know which cards can interrupt an opponent’s plan.
  • When a permanent enters or leaves: note triggered abilities that fire automatically and may require a target or choice.

Learn the setting without treating flavor as rules

Read a short setting introduction if the crossover’s characters or factions motivate you, but do not assume a character’s fictional powers override the printed card text. The story helps you remember cards; the rules text determines what happens. When flavor language and rules language seem to conflict, follow the card’s rules text and official rulings.

Common first-week mistakes and fixes

  • Buying a booster instead of a playable deck: choose a product that explicitly contains complete decks if you want to play immediately.
  • Mixing formats accidentally: ask the group whether the game is two-player, Commander, Standard, or another format before changing a deck.
  • Trying to memorize every keyword: learn the turn loop first and consult a glossary only for mechanics that appear in your current game.
  • Forgetting the once-per-turn land play: track it with a simple verbal announcement or a land-play reminder card.
  • Skipping the opponent’s response window: after casting a spell or declaring attackers, ask whether the opponent has a response before moving on.
  • Overvaluing story knowledge: a fan can begin without knowing every character, while a lore expert still needs to learn mana and timing.
  • Changing decks too quickly: play several games with one list before judging whether its plan is effective or understandable.
  • Assuming every crossover product teaches identically: verify the contents and intended player count of the specific set’s product.

When to seek an in-person lesson

If the turn structure remains confusing after several guided games, an instructor can correct misunderstandings immediately. Wizards’ Magic Academy program is described as a local guided event with teaching decks or a Beginner Box experience, a brochure, and a pocket reference card. Availability depends on participating stores and current scheduling, so check local listings rather than assuming an event exists nearby.

Bring the exact product you plan to use and tell the teacher whether your goal is a two-player crossover game or a multiplayer format. A short explanation tailored to that product is more useful than a broad rules lecture, because the teacher can point to the cards and mechanics you will actually encounter.

What to buy first: a decision checklist

  • You have a friend and want the crossover now: consider the FINAL FANTASY Starter Kit’s two ready-to-play 60-card decks and printed teaching aids.
  • You want a neutral foundation: consider the Foundations Beginner Box, with its guided deck experiences, reference booklet, playmats, and bonus decks.
  • You are learning alone: begin with the Arena tutorial, then repeat games digitally before buying physical cards.
  • You learn best from people: look for a current Magic Academy event or a local beginner session.
  • You want to build custom decks immediately: learn the basic game first; Wizards’ Foundations guidance treats a larger Starter Collection (over 350 cards) as a follow-on deck-building resource rather than the first lesson.
  • You are unsure what your group plays: ask about player count, format, card legality, and whether the group supplies decks before spending money.

How long does learning take?

There is no reliable universal learning-time estimate or independently published success rate established for this path. Your first objective should be functional rather than timed: you can identify the zones, make a legal land play, cast a spell, conduct combat, and explain why the game ended. Once those actions are comfortable, set-specific mechanics become incremental vocabulary instead of a second game to learn.

Wizards’ official how-to-play guide summarizes the practical philosophy well: “If you want to learn more, we suggest you shuffle up and experience the game for yourself.” For a crossover fan, that means getting to a legal, low-pressure first game quickly, then using each unusual card as a focused lesson.
