How to Learn Deadlock Hero Abilities and Reload Timings in the Practice Range

Use the Atrium for fast ability and movement drills, then Sandbox for controlled reload timing. This guide shows the exact setup, trial method, interruption tests and build-specific cautions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The quickest way to learn a Deadlock hero is to use the Atrium for ability and movement drills, then move to Sandbox for controlled reload tests. Enter the Atrium from the Hideout’s main hall, use its fast-cooldown and infinite-stamina machine, and switch to Sandbox through the Play menu or the Atrium teleporter when you need repeatable ammunition and timing conditions.

For a normal reload measurement, disable Sandbox’s No Reload setting. Start every trial with the same hero, weapon and ammunition state, and keep uninterrupted reloads separate from tests in which a melee attack or dash interrupts the animation. Deadlock remains in active development, so treat exact timings as build-specific observations rather than permanent statistics.

Choose the right practice space

Atrium: fast ability and movement practice

The Atrium is the quick practice area connected to the Hideout. From the Hideout’s main hall, enter the Atrium to find static targets and a practice machine that enables fast cooldowns and infinite stamina. That combination is ideal for learning what an ability does without waiting through its normal recovery time.

  • Check an ability’s range by casting at a fixed target and then moving farther away.
  • Observe its animation, cast direction, target requirement and travel time.
  • Use infinite stamina to repeat slides, dashes and jumps while concentrating on the ability rather than resource management.
  • Use the static bots as consistent reference points when comparing aim height, area coverage or projectile travel.

Sandbox: controlled timing tests

Sandbox is the better environment when you need a clean experiment. You can enter it from the Play menu or use the teleporter in the Atrium. Its settings panel lets you change practice conditions, including No Reload, which supplies infinite ammunition.

No Reload is useful for ability repetition and extended firing, but it makes a normal reload impossible to measure. Turn it off before timing a reload. If you forget, the magazine may appear to refill without the animation and delay you are trying to study.

Enter the Atrium and prepare an ability drill

  1. From the Hideout, walk through the main hall and enter the Atrium.
  2. Choose the hero you want to study and equip the ability or weapon you will test.
  3. Locate the practice machine and enable fast cooldowns and infinite stamina.
  4. Stand at a repeatable reference point, such as a fixed distance from a static bot or a marked piece of cover.
  5. Cast the ability once without moving. Watch the full animation, where the effect lands and what target conditions are required.
  6. Repeat the same cast from a different distance or angle. Change only one variable at a time so you can tell whether a result came from range, aim or timing.

Do not try to memorize an entire kit in one pass. The useful objective is to build a reliable mental model: what the ability targets, how far it reaches, how long the animation occupies you and what action you can perform immediately afterward.

Learn abilities in a sequence that transfers to matches

Start with one cast

Use fast cooldowns to cast the ability repeatedly from the same position. On each repetition, check four things: the aiming rule, the effective range, the animation’s commitment and the visible or audible confirmation that the effect occurred. If the ability can miss, deliberately test a miss so you know what failure looks like.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test movement during and after the animation

Repeat the cast while stationary, while moving before the cast and while attempting to move immediately afterward. This reveals whether the ability locks your movement, changes your momentum or leaves you vulnerable during recovery. Infinite stamina lets you repeat the movement portion without introducing a resource limitation.

Combine two abilities

After the single-cast drill is familiar, pair two abilities. Use fast cooldowns to rehearse the order, the gap between casts and the point at which the second ability can be queued. Try the sequence from both sides of a target so you learn whether turning or repositioning changes the result.

Add a simple movement route

Choose a short route around the Atrium’s fixed objects: approach, cast, reposition and cast again. Repeat it until the sequence feels deliberate rather than improvised. The purpose is not to create a perfect combo; it is to connect the ability’s range and animation to movement decisions you can reproduce in a live fight.

Open Sandbox for repeatable experiments

  1. Open the Play menu and select Sandbox, or use the Atrium teleporter to enter it.
  2. Open the Sandbox settings panel before firing or timing anything.
  3. Check the No Reload setting. Leave it enabled for unlimited firing drills; disable it for every normal reload test.
  4. Select one hero and one weapon. Do not change hero, weapon or relevant settings between trials in the same comparison.
  5. Position yourself at a consistent location and face the same direction. A fixed position makes visual and video comparisons easier.

Sandbox is configurable, but configuration can also hide the behavior you are trying to observe. Write down the settings before beginning, especially No Reload, and reset them when switching from ability practice to weapon testing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Measure a reload without confusing the result

Define the exact event

“Reload time” can mean different events. Decide whether you are measuring the time from the reload input to the moment the magazine becomes usable, or the time until the animation visibly finishes. Use the same definition for every trial. If the weapon refills one round at a time, also decide whether you want the first usable round, the full magazine or each individual round interval.

Use a controlled starting state

Record the hero, weapon, magazine capacity if displayed, ammunition remaining and whether the magazine is empty. A full reload that begins with one round left is not the same event as a reload from an empty magazine. Compare like with like:

  • Empty magazine to full magazine.
  • Partially depleted magazine to the same remaining-round count.
  • Uninterrupted reload with no attack, dash or melee input.
  • Interrupted reload as a separate test condition.

Run the trial

  1. With No Reload disabled, fire until you reach the chosen starting ammunition state.
  2. Stop moving and press the reload input once.
  3. Start a stopwatch or record the screen so you can review the exact frames.
  4. Mark the moment the weapon can fire again, using the same test for every attempt.
  5. Repeat the trial several times without changing the starting state.

A video recording is more reliable than trying to read a stopwatch while aiming. If you use a stopwatch, start it on the same visible or audible cue each time. Report a range or average from repeated attempts rather than presenting one imperfect observation as a universal value.

Keep a timing log

Field What to record Why it matters
Build The installed game build or patch date Deadlock is changing, so an older result may not match the current version.
Hero The exact hero selected Reload behavior and weapon handling can differ by hero.
Weapon Weapon name and ammunition state Different weapons can use different reload patterns.
Starting ammo Rounds remaining when reload begins Partial and empty reloads are different events.
Setting No Reload on or off Normal reload timing requires No Reload off.
Condition Uninterrupted, melee-interrupted or dash-interrupted Interruptions change the observed completion point.
Result Time to first usable shot and/or full magazine Separating these events prevents ambiguous “reload time” claims.

Understand the reload behaviors you are seeing

Full-magazine reloads

Many Deadlock weapons refill the magazine in one continuous reload event. For these weapons, measure from the reload input until the weapon is ready to fire again or the magazine is visibly full, and state which endpoint you used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Single-unit reloads

Some weapons load ammunition one unit at a time. The reload animation can therefore produce a usable weapon before the magazine is completely filled, and the total time depends on how many rounds were missing. The reload reference revised on August 26, 2025 uses Abrams and Fathom as examples of this pattern. Because hero and weapon behavior can change, confirm those examples and any exact values in your installed build before relying on them.

Interruptions

A melee attack or dash can interrupt a reload until its animation finishes. Test this separately from a clean reload: first measure an uninterrupted cycle, then begin the same reload and deliberately use the interrupting action. Record whether the weapon resumes, restarts or remains partially loaded in the current build; do not combine the interrupted result with the clean timing.

Compare ability and reload results fairly

When comparing two heroes, weapons or abilities, label every condition. A useful comparison changes one axis at a time:

  • Same hero and weapon, different starting ammunition.
  • Same starting ammunition, different weapon.
  • Same weapon and starting state, No Reload off versus an ability drill with No Reload on.
  • Same reload, uninterrupted versus interrupted by melee.
  • Same ability, different distance or approach angle.

Never compare a full-magazine reload on one weapon with a one-round reload on another and call the result a universal reload speed. Likewise, an ability cast repeated with fast cooldowns is a practice observation, not proof that the live cooldown has that value.

Troubleshoot results that look wrong

The weapon never reloads

Open Sandbox settings and confirm that No Reload is disabled. Then check that you actually have ammunition missing and that the reload input was registered. If the magazine remains unchanged, restart the test with a fresh Sandbox session.

The measured time changes between attempts

Check the starting ammunition count first. For single-unit reloads, even one extra missing round changes the total. Also verify that you did not move, fire, melee or dash during one attempt but not another.

The reload stops halfway

Treat the attempt as an interrupted trial. Melee attacks and dashes can interrupt the reload until their animations finish. Repeat from the same ammunition state without the interrupt, then run a clearly labeled interrupted version.

An ability behaves differently after an update

Record the current patch or build and repeat the drill from a clean session. Do not carry an old timing table forward merely because the hero’s name and ability name are unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account for Deadlock’s active development

The current Sandbox documentation was updated October 8, 2026 and checked against the October 6, 2026 patch. A separate reload-mechanics reference was last modified August 26, 2025. Those dates make the practical method dependable, but they do not guarantee that an older hero-specific number still applies. Deadlock’s ongoing development was still being reported on September 30, 2026, so keep the build date beside every measurement and recheck values after balance or interface changes.

When sharing your results, include the hero, weapon, starting ammunition, Sandbox settings, interruption condition and patch. That context lets another player reproduce the test instead of treating an unexplained number as a permanent game rule.

A repeatable practice session

  1. Two minutes in the Atrium: select one ability, enable fast cooldowns and infinite stamina, and identify its range and animation.
  2. Three minutes of movement: repeat the cast while approaching, retreating and changing angle around a static bot.
  3. Three minutes of combinations: pair the ability with one other ability and rehearse the order from both sides of the target.
  4. Two minutes of Sandbox setup: enter through the Play menu or teleporter, open settings and disable No Reload.
  5. Five minutes of reload trials: test a fixed starting ammunition state several times, then repeat with a deliberately interrupted reload.

Keep the ability notes and reload log separate. The Atrium is optimized for quickly learning interactions; Sandbox is where a controlled weapon experiment belongs. Using each space for its intended purpose produces observations you can reproduce in a match and verify again after a patch.
