You cannot confirm a WhatsApp block with certainty from the app. WhatsApp deliberately avoids a notification or definitive test. Missing activity information, profile changes, one-check messages, failed calls and disappearing Status updates can form a pattern, but every sign also has ordinary explanations such as privacy settings, an offline phone, a changed number or a deleted account.
Quick answer: Check several indicators in the existing chat, consider how long they have persisted, and rule out connection or account changes. Treat the result as “possibly blocked,” never as proof.
The signs that may indicate a block
Last seen or online information disappears
Open the chat and look below the person’s name. If “online” or “last seen” used to appear but no longer does, blocking is one possible explanation. WhatsApp’s safety guidance says a blocked contact cannot see those details, but users can also hide them through privacy controls. Account or connection conditions can produce the same result. This is a weak clue on its own. WhatsApp safety guidance describes the privacy behavior.
The profile photo or its updates disappear
Tap the person’s name at the top of the chat and compare the photo and other profile information with what you previously saw. A blank avatar or no new photo changes can be consistent with blocking. It can equally mean the person removed the photo, limited visibility to contacts, excluded you, changed numbers, or the app has not refreshed its data. Consider this a weak clue, not a test.

Messages remain at one gray check
A single gray check means the message left your device but has not been delivered to the recipient’s device. If a block exists, messages sent afterward may remain that way. A phone that is switched off, disconnected, inactive for a long period, affected by a service problem, or attached to a deleted or changed account can do the same. A delay of a few minutes says little; prolonged non-delivery is a moderate clue, still not confirmation.
Voice or video calls do not connect
One call that fails is not diagnostic. Poor internet, a powered-off phone, VPN or firewall restrictions, battery-saving settings, an inactive account, or caller-privacy controls can prevent connection. WhatsApp’s Silence Unknown Callers feature can stop calls from ringing while leaving them in the call list, so lack of ringing is not proof of a personal block. Make no more than one reasonable call attempt.
WhatsApp also announced Strict Account Settings, rolling out from January 27, 2026, under Settings → Privacy → Advanced. Availability varies by app version, platform and region, and the feature can silence calls from people the user does not know; that is broader than blocking one contact. Meta’s announcement explains the rollout.

Status updates vanish
If you can no longer see the person’s WhatsApp Status, blocking is possible, but users can hide Status from selected contacts or simply stop posting. Treat it as a supporting clue only. WhatsApp’s safety guidance covers Status visibility and profile changes: read the guidance.

| Pattern | Reasonable interpretation |
|---|---|
| One changed privacy signal | Inconclusive; a setting or refresh issue may explain it. |
| Two or three persistent changes | A block is possible, but account and connectivity explanations remain. |
| Several changes plus messages staying undelivered and calls failing | A stronger indication, never a confirmation. |
Use three questions: Did the changes begin together? Have they lasted long enough to make a brief outage unlikely? Can a privacy setting, number change, deleted account or inactive device explain them just as well? If the last answer is yes, leave the status unresolved.
What each check mark means
| What you see | Meaning | Does it prove a block? |
|---|---|---|
| One gray check | Sent from your device, not delivered to theirs. | No. |
| Two gray checks | Delivered to the recipient’s device at that time. | No; it only establishes delivery for that message. |
| Two blue checks | Read, when read receipts are enabled. | No. |
| No check or prolonged sending delay | The message may not have left your device. | No. |
Things that do not prove a block
- A single gray check.
- A missing photo or About information.
- No reply; ignoring a message is not the same as blocking.
- A failed call, especially when the number is not saved or connectivity is poor.
- Failure to add the person to a group. Group-privacy settings and invitation requirements can cause the same result, and a test group may notify or inconvenience the person.
- An encryption-verification screen. Claims that this is a guaranteed detector are not an official WhatsApp diagnostic; treat such guides skeptically. Background on the claim.
- Seeing a profile photo. Cached data and changing privacy behavior mean a visible photo is not a universal all-clear.
Could a privacy setting be responsible?
Yes. WhatsApp lets people control visibility of last seen, online status, profile photos, About information and Status for everyone, contacts, selected contacts or nobody. Someone may also no longer have your number saved, making contact-only settings look like a block. Privacy Checkup provides a guided review of important controls; labels and menu placement can differ between Android, iPhone, Business and regional releases. Meta’s Privacy Checkup and caller-privacy overview describes these features.

Rule out other causes first
- Send a normal message to another WhatsApp contact to test your own connection and account.
- Confirm the person’s number and country code.
- Consider a phone that is off, offline or no longer running WhatsApp.
- Check whether the person changed numbers or deleted the account.
- If the problem started recently, wait and try once later; temporary service or network failures happen.
- Remember that deliberate non-response is also possible and does not establish blocking.
Should you use another number or a blocker-detector app?
No. Do not bypass a possible boundary with another account, number or pressured mutual contact. Third-party “block checker” apps cannot legitimately access a guaranteed private block-status feed and may request contacts, notifications, messages or credentials. Never share a WhatsApp verification code, two-step PIN, QR-code login approval, session cookie or device backup with one. WhatsApp says personal messages and calls are end-to-end encrypted; its privacy features are designed to limit exposure of personal information.
What to do when you still cannot tell
- Record the few indicators you actually observed and how long they have lasted.
- Check your own connection, WhatsApp account and other chats.
- Confirm the number and allow reasonable time for an offline or inactive device.
- Avoid repeated calls and messages. Use another channel only when it is appropriate, non-invasive and genuinely necessary.
- For threats, stalking, coercion or other safety concerns, preserve evidence and contact appropriate local support or emergency services.
WhatsApp support may help with registration, verification, account compromise or problems affecting many contacts, but you should not expect it to disclose another person’s blocking decision.
Frequently asked questions
Can someone block me and still see messages I already sent?
A block prevents new messages from being delivered to that person through the blocked connection. Messages sent before the block may already have been delivered or read; WhatsApp does not provide a retrospective confirmation.
Rank #4
Can I check without sending a message or calling?
You can inspect activity, profile and Status information, but there is no dependable passive check. Those observations are clues with alternative explanations.
Can I still share a WhatsApp group with someone who blocked me?
Existing group membership does not by itself confirm or disprove a personal block. Group conversations and direct chats are separate contexts, and group-add behavior is affected by privacy settings.
Does blocking delete the chat history?
No. A block does not automatically erase the chat stored on your device. Chat history therefore cannot tell you whether a block occurred.

What is the difference between being blocked and being ignored?
Ignoring means a person may receive a message and choose not to answer. Blocking affects delivery and visibility signals, but WhatsApp intentionally leaves those signals ambiguous, so the app cannot reliably distinguish the two for you.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Several persistent signs can make a block plausible, but WhatsApp offers no definitive in-app confirmation. Check your own connection and the contact details, respect the possibility of a boundary, and do not use apps or alternate accounts to force an answer.
