What you need before moderating
You cannot moderate from an ordinary player account. First join the dedicated server with an account that has been registered as an administrator. Hosting documentation describes kicking and banning as admin-only functions; if the Admin area is missing, the account is not authorized or the server build is presenting a different menu layout.
- A dedicated server connection: The controls discussed here are for a dedicated Abiotic Factor server, not a local session with no dedicated-server administration layer.
- An authorized admin account: Admin registration must be completed by whoever controls the server configuration. Being the person who rented or started the server does not automatically mean the in-game account has admin rights.
- The player must be visible for the normal workflow: The Admin interface is designed to act on connected players. A file-based method is available for entering an account identifier before a restart, but it has different timing and risks.
- Current access to the server: You need to be able to join and open the pause menu. If the server is offline, use the configuration-file procedure described later rather than editing a live save directory.
Kick, ban and unban: what each action does
| Action | Effect | Can the player return? | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kick | Ends the player’s current connection. | Yes. The player can connect again unless another restriction applies. | Temporary removal, disruptive behavior that has stopped, or a quick reset of a stuck session. |
| Ban | Blocks the player’s account from re-entering the server. | Not until an administrator removes the ban. | Repeated rule violations, griefing, cheating allegations handled under your server policy, or an account that must be kept out. |
| Unban | Removes an existing ban entry. | Yes, after the player reconnects normally. | Reinstatement after an appeal, an accidental ban, or an expired internal sanction. |
A kick is a session-level action; it does not create a permanent restriction. A ban is persistent until it is removed from the server’s banned-player records. Do not choose Ban when you only need to disconnect someone for a few minutes.

How to kick a connected player from the Admin menu
- Join the dedicated server with your admin account. Wait until your character has loaded into the world and the player list can populate.
- Open the pause menu. Press
Esc. - Open the administration area. Depending on the game build or guide wording, select Admin directly, or choose Player Management first and then Admin.
- Find the connected player. Select the account you want to remove. Check the name carefully before acting; similar display names can make an accidental moderation action possible.
- Choose Kick. Confirm the prompt if one appears. The selected account should be disconnected from the server.
- Verify the result. The player should disappear from the active player list or otherwise lose the current connection. A kick does not prevent a new connection, so a player who is allowed to return can join again.
This is the supported, in-game workflow described by dedicated-server documentation. It does not require editing files or entering a console command.
How to ban a connected player
- Connect as an authorized administrator. If you are already in the world, remain connected while you open the menu.
- Press
Escand open Admin. If your build shows Player Management, open that category first and then select Admin. - Select the player’s account. Confirm that the selected entry is the intended player rather than another account with a similar name.
- Choose Ban. Accept the confirmation dialog, if shown.
- Record the reason according to your server policy. The game’s moderation control applies the restriction; your own rules, logs or appeal process should explain why it was used.
- Check the outcome. A ban is intended to block that account from re-entering. If the person is still visibly connected, use the in-game action again or kick the current session first, then test the account’s ability to reconnect.
Use a ban for a restriction that should survive a disconnect. If the issue is only a temporary interruption, Kick is the less drastic and immediately reversible choice.
How to unban a player
- Join the server with an admin account.
- Press
Escand open the Admin area. On builds that group controls under Player Management, open that section first. - Open Banned Players. This list contains accounts currently blocked by the server.
- Select the account to restore. Compare the displayed name or identifier with your records so you do not remove the wrong restriction.
- Choose Unban and confirm. The account is removed from the banned list.
- Have the player connect again. An unban permits a new connection; it does not create a connection automatically.
If the player is not listed, the restriction may have been entered through a different server installation, an edited configuration file that has not been loaded, or another administrator’s server instance. Verify that you are connected to the same dedicated server and that it has loaded the current configuration.

Are there /kick or /ban console commands?
Do not assume that slash commands work. The Abiotic Factor Wiki’s dedicated-server command list includes limited commands such as showtime, showdatetime, hidedatetime, color-related commands and quit. It does not list kick or ban commands. Hosting documentation likewise describes moderation through the in-game Admin menu and says that vanilla /kick and /ban commands are not documented.

The practical consequence is simple: typing a familiar command from another multiplayer game may do nothing, return an unknown-command error, or create false confidence that the player has been removed. Use the Admin interface unless you have separate, current documentation for a server modification that adds moderation commands. A dedicated-server console can support commands while still being unable to change every gameplay or moderation setting.
Optional file-based bans with Admin.ini
For administrators who need to place an account in the ban list while the server is offline, EmeraldHost documents a community-supported file route. It is not presented as an officially documented vanilla workflow, so treat it as a configuration workaround that can require adjustment after game updates.
File location and entry format
The documented path is:
/AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames/Server/Admin.ini
Within that file, the guide uses a [BannedPlayers] section and an entry in this form:
[BannedPlayers]
BannedPlayer=76561198012345678
The long number is an example account identifier. Replace it with the identifier for the account you intend to restrict; do not copy the example as though it represented a real player on your server. Preserve the section name and key spelling exactly as required by the file format.

Safe editing sequence
- Stop the dedicated server completely. Do not edit the file while the server process is running and writing its save data.
- Make a backup of Admin.ini. Keep an untouched copy so you can recover from a malformed entry or an update that changes the file.
- Open the file in a plain-text editor. Locate or create the
[BannedPlayers]section shown by the hosting guide. - Add the account entry. Use the account identifier supplied by your records and keep each entry on its own line.
- Save the file without changing its name or extension. Avoid rich-text editors that add formatting characters.
- Start or restart the server. The documented method says bans are read at startup, so the change is not active until the server loads the file again.
- Check the result through the Admin area. After joining as an admin, look in Banned Players to confirm that the entry was recognized.
Important limitations of Admin.ini editing
- It is not immediate. The documented route does not remove a player who is already connected. Stop the server, edit the file, restart, and use the in-game controls if you also need to end an active session.
- It is not an official command reference. Because the method is community-documented, an update can change the path, section or behavior. Recheck current server documentation after major game or hosting changes.
- A malformed file can create a larger problem. Keep a backup and change only the necessary section. If the server fails to load, restore the backup and restart before troubleshooting further.
- It is easy to target the wrong account. A display name is not a reliable substitute for the complete account identifier. Verify the identifier before saving.
Choosing the right method
| Decision point | In-game Admin menu | Admin.ini edit |
|---|---|---|
| When it works | While you are connected as an authorized admin. | While the server is stopped and the configuration file can be edited. |
| Interface | Esc → Admin, or Esc → Player Management → Admin. | Plain-text editing of /AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames/Server/Admin.ini. |
| Immediate kick | Kick ends the selected player’s current session. | Not provided by the file edit; the documented route does not immediately remove a connected player. |
| Ban persistence | Ban adds a restriction managed from the server’s admin controls. | The entry is read when the server starts. |
| Reversal | Open Banned Players and choose Unban. | Remove or correct the entry, restart, then verify in the Admin list. |
| Risk | Low: the game supplies the action and selection interface. | Higher: it is an unofficially documented route and an incorrect edit can prevent the intended setting from loading. |
Use the in-game menu for normal moderation. Reserve Admin.ini for an offline or startup-time change when you understand the identifier and have a backup.

The Admin option is missing
Confirm that you joined with the account registered as an admin. Then leave and rejoin the dedicated server so the permission is loaded again. Check both menu paths: some guides show Admin directly, while others place it under Player Management. If neither appears, the account is not being recognized as an administrator or the server is running a build with changed labels.
The wrong player is selected
Pause before confirming. Compare the displayed account name with your server’s records, especially when two players use similar names. For a file edit, use the full account identifier rather than relying on a display name. If you are unsure, cancel the action and verify the identity before applying a ban.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA kicked player reconnects
That is expected. Kick removes the current connection but does not block a later connection. If the player must remain out, apply Ban through the Admin menu and then use Unban only when you are ready to restore access.

An Admin.ini ban does not affect a connected player
The documented file route is read at startup and explicitly does not immediately remove an existing connection. Stop and restart the server after saving the file. For an active session, use the in-game Kick control when available.
The player can still join after a ban
First verify that the ban was applied to the correct account and that you are connected to the intended server instance. If the entry was edited manually, confirm that the file path, section name, key and identifier were preserved, then restart the server. After joining as an admin, inspect Banned Players; an absent entry indicates that the server did not load the edit or that the change was made to a different installation.
Unban is not visible
Open the Admin area and look specifically for Banned Players, not only the active-player list. If the list is empty, check the server instance and restart status. A ban stored in another server’s files will not appear in the current server’s list.

A console command returns an error
This is consistent with the available vanilla command documentation. The dedicated-server console list does not document /kick or /ban. Return to the in-game Admin workflow instead of repeatedly trying command variants.

Admin practices that prevent accidental lockouts
- Publish a clear rule set. Tell players what behavior can lead to a kick or ban and how an appeal will be handled.
- Use the least persistent action that solves the problem. Kick for a temporary interruption; reserve Ban for a restriction that should survive reconnects.
- Keep a moderation log. Record the account, date, reason and administrator. This makes an Unban decision auditable and helps distinguish two players with similar names.
- Limit administrator access. Only trusted accounts should be registered as admins because the same interface can remove players or impose persistent restrictions.
- Back up before file changes. Copy Admin.ini before editing and retain the prior version until the server has restarted successfully.
- Recheck after updates. Menu labels and community-documented file behavior can change between game builds. If Admin moves from a direct menu item to Player Management, the function itself has not necessarily been removed.
Practical moderation scenarios
A player is disrupting a single session
Open Esc → Admin, select the account and choose Kick. This ends the current disruption without creating a lasting restriction. If the behavior resumes after reconnection, apply your server’s escalation policy rather than repeatedly kicking without a record.
A repeat offender must stay out
Select the account in the same Admin interface and choose Ban. Keep the reason in your moderation log. If the player later appeals successfully, open Banned Players and choose Unban; the player can then attempt a new connection.
You need to block an account before the next server start
Stop the server, back up Admin.ini, add the verified account identifier beneath [BannedPlayers], save, and restart. Because the documented file method is read at startup and is not an immediate disconnect mechanism, use the in-game controls for any player who is currently online.

Bottom line
For vanilla Abiotic Factor dedicated servers, use the in-game Admin menu: Esc → Admin (or Player Management → Admin), select the connected player, then choose Kick or Ban. Kick permits a later return; Ban blocks re-entry until you use Banned Players → Unban. The standard console documentation does not include /kick or /ban. Editing /AbioticFactor/Saved/SaveGames/Server/Admin.ini is an optional, unofficially documented startup-time method that requires the server to be stopped, backed up and restarted.
