To remove someone immediately, open an administrator console and run /kickuser "username" (some servers instead use /kick <name>). The player is disconnected but can rejoin. For a lasting block, use /banid <SteamID64>; a Steam-ID ban is harder to evade than a name ban. You can also use /banuser "username", adding -ip when you also need to block the player’s current IP address.

Choose the right action: kick, name ban or Steam-ID ban
These actions solve different moderation problems. A kick is a short-term removal. A ban prevents the identified account or name from joining until you reverse it. Selecting the narrowest action that solves the problem reduces accidental lockouts.

Use a kick for an immediate interruption, a name ban when you only have the player’s displayed name, and a Steam-ID ban when you need the most reliable account-level block. If a player is repeatedly returning under new names, replace a name ban with a Steam-ID ban rather than adding more name variants.

What you need before running a moderation command
- Administrator access: Kick and ban commands require admin rights. A normal player’s command will fail or be ignored.
- The exact identifier: Names containing spaces should be enclosed in quotation marks. A Steam-ID ban requires the numeric SteamID64, not a nickname.
- The correct command surface: In-game consoles generally show the leading slash. Some hosting control panels expect the command without that slash.
- A current server session: Make changes from the console connected to the server you intend to moderate. A command sent to a different instance will not affect the target player.
If you are unsure whether your account is privileged, check the server’s administrator setup and then test the local help command. Do not guess at extra parameters: guides disagree about some syntax, and an unrecognized argument can make an otherwise valid command fail.
Kick a player from the server
Using the commonly documented kick-user form
- Open the server’s in-game administrator console.
- Type
/kickuser "username", replacingusernamewith the player’s current name. - Press Enter and verify that the player disappears from the connected-player list or receives a disconnect.
The -r option can attach a reason: /kickuser "username" -r "Please reconnect after reading the server rules". Keep the reason short and factual so the player understands what happened without turning the command into a long message.

Another published command reference lists /kick <name> instead of /kickuser. The available form is not confirmed as identical on every Project Zomboid build or host. If /kickuser is rejected, run /help and try the syntax your server reports; do not append undocumented Boolean values or other trailing arguments.

What a kick does not do
A kick is not a ban. It closes the current connection, but the player is allowed to join again. If the behavior is a one-time disruption, leave it at a kick. If the same conduct continues, record the name and Steam ID while the player is connected and use the appropriate ban command instead.
Ban by player name
- Confirm the exact name currently shown by the server.
- Enter
/banuser "username". - Optionally include a reason with
-r "reason", for example/banuser "username" -r "Repeated rule violations". - Check the server response and the player list to make sure the intended account was affected.
To add an IP block at the same time, use /banuser "username" -ip. You can combine the IP option with a reason if your server accepts the documented ordering, but check /help when the parser rejects the line. An IP block can affect other people using the same address and may stop working when the player’s address changes, so it is not a substitute for an account identifier.
Why a name ban is easier to evade
A displayed name is not a stable identity. A player can rename the account and attempt to return under a different name. A name ban is still useful when you need an immediate block and do not yet know the SteamID64, but replace it with an ID-based ban when you can verify the identifier.

Ban by SteamID64
- Obtain the player’s numeric SteamID64 from a trustworthy server record, administrator panel or other identifier your server exposes.
- Check each digit carefully; one wrong digit targets a different account.
- Run
/banid <SteamID64>, substituting the number without angle brackets. For example, the command shape is/banid 7656119XXXXXXXXXX; use the player’s actual complete value, not this illustrative pattern. - Confirm the server’s success message and retain the identifier with your moderation record.
Server guides recommend the Steam ID over a name because renaming does not change the account identifier. The /players command lists connected players, but available references do not establish that every server displays Steam IDs in that output. Treat the list as a way to confirm names and connections, not as a guaranteed source of IDs. If your output omits the number, use the identifier shown by your own panel or logs rather than guessing.
Where to enter commands
In-game administrator console
When you are operating inside the game, include the leading slash shown in the command examples: /kickuser, /banuser, /banid and the unban commands. Open the console available to your administrator account, enter one complete command, and wait for the server response before issuing another. Quotation marks are especially important for names or reasons containing spaces.
Hosting control panel console
Some hosting panels remove the leading slash from server commands. In such a panel, the same action may need to be entered as kickuser "username" rather than /kickuser "username". This is a console-interface difference, not a different moderation action. Use the panel’s command help or send a harmless help query first. If the panel reports an unknown command, try the documented slash convention for that interface instead of repeatedly resubmitting the same line.

Players menu
An alternative to typing is the in-game menu: press Esc, choose Players, select the player, and choose the available kick or ban action. This is useful when you need to act quickly and are unsure of a name’s spelling. The menu still requires administrator rights, and the available choices can vary by build. Use the console when you need a reason, an IP option or a Steam-ID ban that the menu does not expose.

If moderation commands are unavailable, fix the access level before troubleshooting command spelling. Administrator setup differs between Build 41 and Build 42.
Build 42
Guides for Build 42 describe setaccesslevel as the administrator command rather than grantadmin. To revoke administrator access, set the account’s level back to user. Because exact argument order is build- and server-dependent in the available references, use your server’s /help output for the complete line before changing an account.
Build 41
Build 41 instructions use the older administrator scheme. Revocation is described as setting the access level to none. Do not apply the Build 42 procedure blindly to a Build 41 server, or vice versa; first identify the build shown by your server and then follow its help text.
After changing an access level, reconnect or refresh the administrator session if the server does not recognize the new privilege immediately. Once the account is confirmed as an administrator, retry the moderation command with the syntax shown by that server.
Undo a ban
Unbanning mirrors the way the block was created. Use the matching identifier and quote names that contain spaces.

- Identify which ban type was applied. A name unban does not necessarily remove an ID or IP block.
- Enter the corresponding unban command in the same console style used for the ban.
- Verify the server’s response, then have the player try again if appropriate.
Keep a record of both the original command and the reversal. This prevents a later administrator from removing the wrong restriction or overlooking an additional IP block attached to a name ban.
Handling command errors and conflicting syntax
“Unknown command” or no response
- Check administrator rights first.
- Confirm whether the console requires a leading slash.
- Run
/help(or the panel’s equivalent) and copy the command name exactly. - Try the alternate kick form only when the help output or your host’s documented syntax supports it.
The player name is not recognized
- Use the exact spelling and capitalization shown in the player list.
- Wrap the full name in quotation marks when it contains spaces.
- If the player has just renamed the account, use the current displayed name for a kick, then obtain the SteamID64 for a durable ban.
The ban appears ineffective
- Check whether you used a name ban against a renamed account.
- Confirm every digit of the SteamID64.
- Look for an existing IP restriction that may be separate from the account ban.
- Verify that the command was sent to the live server instance, not a stopped or different instance in the panel.
Do not add undocumented trailing values
Some command summaries show a final Boolean argument for ban commands, while other references omit it. That parameter is not verified here. Leave it out unless your server’s own /help output explicitly requires it.

A practical moderation workflow
- Assess the immediate risk. If the player is actively disrupting the server, kick first to stop the session.
- Capture identity details. Record the displayed name and, when available, the SteamID64 before the player leaves.
- Choose the least evasive block. Use a name ban for a known name, an ID ban for a verified account, and add an IP block only when the situation justifies the collateral risk.
- State a concise reason. Use the optional
-rtext where supported and keep a private moderation record with the command, date and administrator. - Verify the result. Confirm the disconnect or rejection message, then check that the intended player—not a similarly named account—was affected.
- Review and reverse deliberately. If an appeal succeeds, use the unban command matching the original restriction and test the player’s return.
Kick versus ban: quick decisions
