OBS reconnecting does not guarantee that YouTube’s stream health is green. OBS retries its connection to the ingest server; YouTube reports whether it is receiving a healthy feed. After any reconnect, check YouTube Live Control Room, read its status or error message, and investigate dropped frames, bitrate, and connection stability if the stream is still unhealthy.
Check YouTube’s status after OBS reconnects
- Let OBS finish reconnecting. In OBS, automatic reconnect is under Settings → Advanced → Automatically Reconnect. The retry setting controls OBS’s attempts to restore its output connection; it does not verify that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. OBS’s retry delay behavior depends on its configured options and version, so there is no universal retry count or delay that guarantees recovery.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Check the stream health status and read any specific message. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and reviewing messages during an event. YouTube’s encoder settings and live-stream guidance explains the status checks and recommended settings.
- Compare the symptoms. A YouTube ingest or encoder-setting message points you toward the feed configuration; OBS’s “Dropped frames” points to a connection that is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. Check both rather than assuming a successful OBS retry fixed the cause.
Set encoder settings for YouTube
For YouTube’s documented RTMP/RTMPS encoder profile, use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Choose a bitrate that fits the codec, resolution, frame rate, and the upload capacity your connection can sustain. YouTube’s figures are recommendations, not guarantees that a connection can maintain a given bitrate.

These values are from YouTube’s current help-page guidance accessed in 2026. Check YouTube’s encoder table for your actual codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than applying these two examples to every stream. A speed test can help assess available upload capacity, but test under conditions resembling the broadcast and leave room for normal network variation.

Test before the broadcast
Run a test stream before the event, using the same encoder settings and a representative section of the content. Include audio and motion: a static screen may not expose problems that appear during a busier scene. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and monitor stream health and messages during the test and live event. YouTube’s guidance recommends both pre-event testing and live monitoring.

Troubleshoot unhealthy health or dropped frames
- OBS reports dropped frames: OBS says this can mean the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Try lowering the video bitrate and, if you are on Wi-Fi, testing over a wired connection. A wired path can help isolate Wi-Fi instability, but it will not fix ISP congestion, an outage, or an encoder setting error. See OBS’s dropped-frames troubleshooting guide.
- YouTube reports an encoder or ingest problem: Read the exact Live Control Room message and compare the encoder’s codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current guidance. Change the setting implicated by the message, then test again.
- The stream key was reset: Copy the current key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. YouTube describes a stream key as the information that tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. A stale key can prevent the encoder from using the intended stream configuration. See YouTube’s stream-key and encoder setup guidance.
- The issue persists despite a suitable bitrate: Check whether the problem follows a Wi-Fi connection, a particular ingest server selection, network software or VPN, outdated drivers, router, cable, or other hardware. OBS lists these as possible factors; test the components suggested by the symptoms rather than treating any one as a certain cause.
Changing YouTube’s auto-start or auto-stop options affects starting or stopping a broadcast from the encoder. Those options do not guarantee green stream health after a disconnect.
