Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhen a cached YouTube Data API resource expires, request it again. Where the resource supports ETags, send the stored ETag in a conditional request: a changed response replaces the cached representation, while HTTP 304 Not Modified means you can keep the existing body and mark it revalidated. YouTube does not prescribe one universal cache lifetime; choose a refresh interval for your application’s freshness needs while meeting the API data storage rules.
What to do when a cache entry expires
Expiry is a signal to check the resource with YouTube, not a reason to keep serving it indefinitely or discard it before you have tried to revalidate it. For an ETag-enabled resource, the conditional request can establish whether the cached representation remains valid without downloading a replacement when nothing changed. Google describes ETags as a way to reduce latency and bandwidth, but notes that ETag support varies among client libraries. Verify your library and HTTP transport’s behavior.
Implement the refresh flow
- Save the response with its ETag. Store the representation, ETag, fetch time, and identity of the resource or query together. The identity matters: the cached validator must be used for the same resource and request context.
- When the entry expires, request that resource again. Use the relevant list method and request only the parts and fields the client needs. If you already have a video ID, use
videos.listwith the ID filter rather than repeating a broad search. - Send the stored ETag conditionally, if supported. If YouTube returns a new representation, replace the cached body and save the new ETag. If the response is HTTP 304 Not Modified, retain the existing body and record that it was revalidated.
- Handle refresh failures honestly. YouTube’s policy requires user-facing presentations to show the most up-to-date API data available. If a refresh fails, preserve a prior value only with clear age or historical context; do not present it as current. This is an implementation approach for meeting the display requirement, not a separate API response rule.
Choose a refresh interval without confusing it with the retention limit
Set an application-level revalidation interval based on how quickly the value needs to reflect changes and how much request volume your application can support. The cited YouTube guidance does not set a universal TTL for every resource. Nor is the policy’s 30-calendar-day ceiling a recommended freshness interval: YouTube says clients should make reasonable efforts to keep stored API data consistent with current data and display the most updated data available.
The storage deadline depends on the data category and authorization status. YouTube’s Developer Policies distinguish these cases:

- Analytics, Reporting API data, and certain statistics retrieved as authorized data: may be stored as long as needed for the consented purpose, subject to verifying authorization remains valid every 30 days. For the example of video views, also verify that the video has not been deleted.
- Statistics retrieved as non-authorized data: may not be stored for more than 30 days.
- Other authorized data: may be stored only as long as needed for the consented purpose and no longer than 30 calendar days; after that, delete or refresh it.
- Limited amounts of non-authorized data: may be stored temporarily for no longer than 30 calendar days, then must be deleted or refreshed.
These are distinct policy categories, not interchangeable rules. Design your cache so it can identify which applies to each value and enforce any required authorization, refresh, and deletion checks. The policy states: “In all cases, API Clients must use reasonable efforts to ensure that their stored API Data is consistent with the current data available through YouTube API Services.”
Choose between scheduled and on-demand refreshes
YouTube does not mandate either schedule. A scheduled refresh proactively updates entries; an on-demand conditional request checks a resource when a reader or process needs it. Your choice depends on freshness expectations, request volume, client support for ETags, and the policy deadline for that data category.

| Pattern | Useful when | Trade-off to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled refresh | Values need to be checked before a user asks for them, or predictable freshness is important. | Refreshes may request data that is never used; schedule frequency must fit quota and storage rules. |
| On-demand conditional request | You only need to validate an entry when a reader or process requests it. | The first request after expiry depends on the API check completing; confirm the client can send and handle ETags. |
Refresh targeted resources and manage quota
For a known video ID, videos.list is a targeted refresh method. Its reference lists a cost of one quota unit per call. Request only necessary part properties and use fields to trim nested response properties; the API overview says partial responses reduce unnecessary retrieval and transfer.
Google’s YouTube Data API Overview documents default daily allocations of 100 search.list calls, 100 videos.insert calls, and 10,000 units for other endpoints. These are defaults, may change, and are not a guarantee of your project’s allocation. Check the API Console for the project’s actual quota. Search calls use their own allocation, and pagination adds requests, so plan search refreshes separately rather than treating them like a one-unit video lookup. The Quota and Compliance Audits page repeats the defaults and says an audit must be completed before requesting more quota.

Checklist for a reliable cache
- Associate each cached response with its resource or query identity, fetch time, and ETag when available.
- On expiry, revalidate the same resource; reuse the stored body on HTTP 304 and replace it when a new representation arrives.
- Verify ETag handling in the specific client library and transport you use.
- Request only needed parts and fields, and prefer an ID-targeted lookup over repeating a search when the ID is known.
- Track freshness intervals separately from category-specific storage, authorization, and deletion deadlines.
- When a refresh fails, label an older value with its age or historical context instead of implying it is current.
- Check current project quota and current method costs before relying on documented defaults.
