If your Bluetooth headphones sound muffled or less spacious as soon as a call starts, the app may have activated their built-in microphone. On many Bluetooth Classic setups, that switches audio from a stereo playback mode to a two-way call mode with monaural playback. The change is a Bluetooth profile trade-off, not necessarily a fault with your headphones. The fix depends on whether you need the headset microphone and what your computer supports.
Why call audio can sound worse
Bluetooth Classic commonly uses different profiles for listening and for calls. Microsoft describes A2DP as high-quality stereo playback that does not capture audio from the headset microphone. The Hands-Free Profile (HFP) supports microphone capture and playback at the same time, but playback is monaural. Windows can switch to HFP when an app opens the headset microphone, and audio sent to the headset may be resampled for that profile. Microsoft’s Bluetooth Classic audio documentation was last updated November 14, 2024.

That is why music, game audio, or other sound may lose stereo width or seem muffled during a call, then return to normal when the microphone is no longer in use. On a Mac, Apple likewise notes that audio quality and volume may fall when an app uses the Bluetooth headphones’ microphone; static or popping can also occur. Apple’s guidance was published May 5, 2025.

Mac: stop apps from using the headphone microphone
- Close video-call, voice-chat, or other apps that are using the Bluetooth headphones’ built-in microphone.
- Check that System Settings—or System Preferences on older macOS versions—is not open with Sound settings displayed.
- If the sound remains reduced, open Control Centre > Sound and select the Mac’s internal speakers. Then select the Bluetooth headphones again.
Apple says the quality reduction lasts while the headphones’ microphone is in use. These steps address that microphone state; if the problem occurs during ordinary playback too, it may have another cause.

Windows: use a separate microphone if you want stereo playback
If the sound changes when a call app starts using the headset microphone, try choosing another microphone—such as the computer’s built-in mic—as the call input while keeping the Bluetooth headphones selected as the output. This is a practical inference from the A2DP/HFP roles, not a guaranteed fix: call apps and device settings differ, and some apps may manage audio devices themselves.
In your call app’s audio settings, choose the alternate device for the microphone and the Bluetooth headphones for speakers. If the app does not offer separate input and output choices, check Windows and app device settings; the available controls vary. If the headset microphone remains active, the computer may still use the call profile.

Windows 11: check whether LE Audio stereo is supported
Some Windows 11 PCs can improve playback while a Bluetooth microphone is active, and some support stereo in that situation. Microsoft’s documented stereo option requires Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer, a PC with factory-integrated Bluetooth LE support, suitable manufacturer drivers, and a Bluetooth LE Audio peripheral. For the updates described by Microsoft, the page specifies build 26100.4484 or newer. A headset’s LE Audio branding alone does not establish that the complete PC-and-driver setup supports stereo during microphone use. See Microsoft’s Bluetooth audio quality guidance for the compatibility details.
- Open Settings > System > Sound.
- Open the output settings for the Bluetooth LE Audio device.
- Look for “Format when microphone is active.” If it is available, choose stereo or mono.
If that setting is missing, Microsoft says the system does not support stereo with the microphone active. If stereo causes dropouts or glitches, try mono for compatibility.

If the sound is poor outside calls
The A2DP-to-HFP trade-off explains a quality change tied to microphone use; it does not explain every Bluetooth audio problem. If sound is also poor during ordinary listening, or you have no sound or connection trouble, work through Microsoft’s general checks: confirm the correct output device, check the audio format, remove and pair the headphones again, toggle Bluetooth, install current Bluetooth drivers and Windows updates, and confirm A2DP support. The steps are in Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting guide. These checks may help with other faults, but they do not remove the Classic-profile trade-off while the headset microphone is active.
Which approach makes sense?
| Approach | Keep using headset microphone? | What it depends on | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Close apps using the mic (Mac) | No, while those apps are closed | An app is using the built-in microphone | Calls stop using that mic; Apple’s speaker reselection can refresh the connection. |
| Select a different call microphone (Windows) | No | The call app and computer let you choose input and output separately | A setting to try, not a guaranteed fix. |
| Use stereo with microphone active (supported Windows 11 systems) | Yes | Windows 11 24H2 or newer, factory-integrated Bluetooth LE, suitable drivers, and a compatible LE Audio peripheral | Requires the whole setup to support the mode; switch to mono if stereo glitches. |
| Keep the Bluetooth Classic headset mic active | Yes | Bluetooth Classic call audio | HFP playback is monaural rather than A2DP stereo. |
When these fixes do not explain the change
If audio remains degraded after the call app stops using the headset microphone, or it is poor in music and other playback too, investigate ordinary Bluetooth output, pairing, driver, or app problems rather than assuming the call-profile switch is responsible. The documented behavior describes common platform handling, not every headset, app, driver, or firmware implementation.
