You can usually keep your WhatsApp chat history when switching phones, but the right transfer method depends on whether you are moving between Android phones, between iPhones, or across platforms. Keep the old phone and its WhatsApp data intact until you have opened WhatsApp on the new phone and checked that the chats you need are there. If you are changing your number, change it in WhatsApp on the old phone before transferring.
Choose the transfer route before setting up the new phone
Use a direct transfer when the old phone is available and working. For an Android-to-iPhone move, the transfer is part of initial iPhone setup; for an iPhone-to-Android move, transfer the history before activating WhatsApp on the new Android. A cloud backup is a separate route, and a backup from one platform should not be assumed to restore directly onto the other.

Before you start: protect the account and source data
- Keep the old phone intact. Do not delete its WhatsApp data, reset it, or uninstall WhatsApp until you have verified the new phone. WhatsApp gives this warning in its Android chat-transfer instructions and its transfer troubleshooting guidance.
- Plan around your phone number. If keeping the same number, use it to register WhatsApp on the new phone. If adopting a new number, first use WhatsApp’s Change Number feature on the old phone, then transfer. Registering the new number on the new phone first can put the chat history at risk. - Keep both phones available, powered, and connected as the route requires. Install or update WhatsApp before starting where specified, and allow requested permissions.
- Do not treat a phone-to-phone transfer as a cloud backup. After migrating, make a fresh Google Account or iCloud backup if you want a cloud recovery copy.
Android to Android: use WhatsApp Chat Transfer
WhatsApp’s direct transfer requires Android 6 or later on both phones, the same phone number, Wi-Fi enabled, close proximity, and both devices connected to power. Begin on the old phone before registering WhatsApp on the new one.

- On the old Android phone, open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Chats > Transfer chats.
- On the new phone, install WhatsApp, start setup with the same number, and choose the option to transfer from the old phone when prompted.
- Use the new phone to scan the QR code shown on the old phone.
- Keep both phones unlocked and WhatsApp open while the transfer runs. Check the chats and media on the new phone before changing or erasing the old one.
The feature does not transfer peer-to-peer payment messages or media received through WhatsApp Channels. WhatsApp says the current WhatsApp Business app cannot use this feature. Check the current Android transfer requirements if the menu or prompts differ.
Android to iPhone: transfer during iPhone setup
This route uses Apple’s Move to iOS app and must be done while setting up a new or factory-reset iPhone. WhatsApp lists Android Lollipop/SDK 21 or later, iOS 15.5 or later, current WhatsApp versions, and the same phone number as requirements. Both phones need power and must use the same Wi-Fi network, or the Android phone must connect to the iPhone’s hotspot.

- On Android, install or update Move to iOS and WhatsApp. Start setting up the iPhone and follow Apple’s transfer steps.
- When offered the data-selection screen in Move to iOS, select WhatsApp. Follow the prompts on Android to prepare the chat export.
- Complete the Move to iOS transfer and finish setting up the iPhone.
- Install and open WhatsApp on the iPhone, then sign in with the same phone number and follow the import prompts.
- Check the transferred chats. Then create an iCloud backup if you want the migrated history stored there; the transfer itself does not put it in iCloud.
Apple says a USB-C cable can be used as an optional, faster connection for Android-to-iPhone migration; it is not a universal WhatsApp requirement. Google describes a cord as more reliable than Wi-Fi for its transfer flow. Check both phones’ ports and instructions before choosing a wired connection: Apple’s Move to iOS guidance and Google’s transfer guidance.

iPhone to Android: transfer before activating WhatsApp
WhatsApp’s instructions call for Android 6 or later on the new phone, current WhatsApp apps, stable Wi-Fi, and the same phone number. The transfer must take place before WhatsApp is activated on the new Android phone; WhatsApp says old and new histories cannot be merged.
- Set up the new Android phone and follow its WhatsApp transfer prompts without activating WhatsApp first.
- On the iPhone, open WhatsApp and go to Chats > Transfer chat history > Transfer to Android.
- Follow the QR-code and Wi-Fi prompts on the new phone. Keep the iPhone unlocked while the transfer runs.
- Once the transfer finishes, open WhatsApp on Android and register with the same number. Check the history before retiring the iPhone.
Payment messages, status updates, display name, and media received through Channels are excluded in WhatsApp’s cited instructions. The local transfer does not itself send the data to cloud storage. See WhatsApp’s iPhone-to-Android instructions.

When a backup-and-restore route makes sense
Use a backup if you cannot use the direct transfer route and have a successful backup for the destination platform. A backup reflects its last successful run, not necessarily the latest messages on the phone. WhatsApp says it cannot restore chat history for you because the history is not stored on its servers.

The Google Account backup is associated with both the WhatsApp number and Google Account. Each new backup replaces the previous one, and WhatsApp says the prior version cannot be restored. Google may automatically delete a backup that has not been updated in five months. The backup is not protected by WhatsApp end-to-end encryption unless encrypted backup is enabled. WhatsApp recommends Wi-Fi to avoid possible mobile-data charges and power for the first, potentially lengthy backup. Details are in WhatsApp’s Google Account backup guidance.

iPhone: iCloud backup
To restore, use the same phone number and Apple ID used for the backup, and make sure there is enough free space on both the iPhone and iCloud. Messages received after the latest successful backup cannot be restored from it. Videos are included only if Include videos was enabled when that backup was made. If the transfer stalls or something is missing
- Confirm you selected the correct QR code and accepted the permissions requested by WhatsApp.
- Check that both phones meet the route’s Wi-Fi and connection requirements, then restart both phones if an error occurs.
- Do not erase or uninstall WhatsApp from the old phone while troubleshooting. If the migration fails, the source data may still be available there.
- If the old phone or number is unavailable, recovery may require regaining access to the account; a backup can only help if one exists and meets the restore requirements.
Transfer instructions describe supported procedures, not a guarantee that every item will move in every case. Check the destination phone directly for the conversations and media you need before clearing the source device.
