For banking, shopping, account recovery, or sensitive work, use your phone’s cellular data instead of public Wi-Fi when practical. If you join a hotspot, verify its network name and sign-in steps with venue staff, switch off automatic joining, and use HTTPS for browser activity. Public Wi-Fi is not automatically unsafe for ordinary encrypted browsing, but encryption does not prove a website is legitimate.
Choose the connection to match the task
Public Wi-Fi security is not an all-or-nothing question. The FTC says public Wi-Fi is usually safe when the information you send is encrypted, as most websites now encrypt connections. CISA takes a more cautious approach to high-impact activities: it advises against using open public Wi-Fi for personal business, banking, or shopping. Verify the hotspot before connecting
Attackers can imitate public hotspots, including with names resembling those of airports, hotels, cafés, or other venues. Ask staff for the exact network name and how guests should sign in; do not rely only on a name that looks familiar or a portal that resembles the venue’s branding. CISA’s Cybersecurity While Traveling tip card and Best Practices for Using Public Wi-Fi advise travellers to verify network details and avoid automatic connections.
Disable automatic joining
Turn off settings that automatically join open or previously saved networks, so your phone does not connect without you choosing the network. Menu names vary by phone and operating-system version; look in the Wi-Fi settings for options such as auto-join or automatically connect. Review saved networks too, and remove ones you no longer need if your phone keeps reconnecting to them.

Use HTTPS, but do not treat it as proof of trust
For browser-based banking or shopping, check that the address begins with https:// and that the browser indicates a secure connection. HTTPS encrypts data travelling between your browser and the website. It does not verify the business behind the page: a scammer can operate an encrypted site, and a secure connection cannot make a phishing link safe. If a message or advertisement sent you to an unexpected login page, leave it and reach the service through its official app or an address you know.
Prepare your phone before the trip
- Install available operating-system and app updates before departure.
- Back up important information so it is recoverable if the phone is lost or damaged.
- Protect the device with a strong PIN or password and use its screen lock.
- Keep the phone with you in public and secure it in your accommodation.
- Turn Bluetooth off when you are not using it.
These steps are included in CISA’s travel security guidance. They reduce avoidable exposure and help protect the device itself, not just the Wi-Fi connection.

Avoid unfamiliar computers and charging stations
Do not connect your phone to a computer or charging station you do not control. A USB connection can allow software on the connected computer to interact with your phone in unexpected ways, according to CISA’s travel advice. Use your own charger and a power outlet where possible.

Your phone’s cellular connection is generally more secure than public Wi-Fi, according to CISA. If your carrier and phone support it, you may be able to share that connection through a personal hotspot. A dedicated portable hotspot is another option, not a requirement or a guarantee that every online activity is safe. Check destination coverage, roaming charges, SIM or eSIM compatibility, and carrier terms before relying on either option. CISA discusses personal wireless hotspots in its public Wi-Fi guidance.

Respond quickly to suspicious messages or account activity
Be cautious with unexpected links, texts, and attachments, even when you are connected to a network you trust. If you suspect an account has been compromised, contact the bank or service provider and change associated passwords from a different computer you control, as CISA advises in its travel guidance.
