How to Keep Your Home Warm on Cool, Rainy Days Without Overheating It

Keep your home comfortable on a cool, rainy day by heating the rooms you use at the times you use them, cutting door draughts without blocking vents, and removing moisture at its source. There is no separate official temperature target for rainy days. UK guidance instead recommends a comfortable temperature, with at least 18°C suggested for rooms used frequently; that figure is specific advice, not a universal setting for every person or room.

Set the heating around your routine

Adjust the heating schedule before turning the thermostat higher. The Met Office recommends scheduling heating to come on shortly before you get up and switching it off after bedtime. Close doors and draw curtains in the rooms you are using to help retain warmth.

If you cannot heat every room, the Met Office suggests keeping the living room warm during the day and heating the bedroom shortly before bed. In very cold weather, its advice is to extend the heating period rather than raise the thermostat setting.

UK cold-weather guidance says, “You should heat your home to a temperature that is comfortable for you.” It suggests trying to heat rooms used frequently, such as the living room or bedroom, to at least 18°C. Separate UK government ventilation guidance specifically advises people aged 65 or older, or those with a long-term health condition, to keep the room they occupy at least 18°C. These are qualified recommendations, not a requirement to keep every room at that temperature.

Reduce draughts without sealing off ventilation

A door draught excluder can reduce cold air entering around a door. It is a simple occupant adjustment; the cited guidance does not establish a particular product, price, or amount of energy saved. Do not use one to cover a trickle vent or another ventilation opening.

Keep installed trickle vents unobstructed. The GOV.UK Existing home ventilation guide says: “Always leave trickle vents open and unblocked, even in winter.” These vents supply fresh air that mixes with warmer indoor air, so closing them to keep heat in can compromise ventilation.

Remove moisture where it is produced

Cooking, washing and showering add water vapour to indoor air. Use kitchen and bathroom extractor fans during these activities, and keep the fans maintained. If extraction is poor or moisture-laden air remains indoors, it can condense on colder surfaces and contribute to damp and mould.

Rain outside does not, by itself, show that a home is damp. Look for indoor signs such as persistent condensation, and consider possible causes such as leaks, ineffective extraction or inadequate ventilation. Persistent damp or mould may point to an underlying building, heating or ventilation problem; seek qualified local advice rather than assuming a gadget or surface cleaning will fix it. England’s cold-weather guidance also recommends professional input when considering home improvements, with ventilation taken into account.

Ventilate when it is cold or raining

Ventilation and warmth are compatible: keep trickle vents clear and use extractors, especially during moisture-producing activities. If you need more air and conditions allow, a brief or partial window opening can provide ventilation without leaving the window fully open. Avoid letting rain enter, and account for indoor temperature needs and security. When opening a window is impractical, prioritize installed vents and working extraction.

Choose an adjustment for the problem

Adjustment Where it acts Ventilation impact Type of change
Heating schedule and room choice Heating control and occupied rooms Does not require blocking ventilation Quick occupant adjustment
Door draught excluder Gaps around a door Preserves required ventilation when vents are left clear Quick occupant adjustment; optional accessory
Kitchen or bathroom extractor Moisture and stale air at source Removes indoor air; keep equipment functioning and maintained Use and maintenance; repairs may need qualified help
Trickle vents or brief window opening Fresh-air supply Provides ventilation; do not obstruct installed vents Quick occupant adjustment
Investigation of persistent cold or damp Underlying property, heating or ventilation condition Improvements should consider ventilation Longer-term assessment or property improvement

Use supplemental heaters safely

If you use an electric heater, keep it away from curtains and furniture, do not use it to dry clothes, and unplug it when you leave the room or go to bed. UK cold-weather advice also recommends having heating and cooking appliances checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer and having a carbon monoxide alarm that complies with EN 50291.
