How to Keep Your Home Internet Working During a Power Outage

Keep internet equipment powered with a properly sized backup, and use a cellular hotspot if the provider network is unavailable.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To keep your home internet available during a power outage, provide backup power to every powered device in your connection chain: the modem or gateway, router, and, for some fiber setups, a separate optical network terminal (ONT). A UPS can bridge a short interruption; a larger battery system or generator can run equipment longer if it is properly sized. Neither will restore service if your internet provider’s network is down, so prepare a cellular hotspot as an alternative when coverage and your plan allow it.

Will your internet still work if the power goes out?

It can, but only if both your home equipment and the provider’s network remain operational. Modems, gateways, routers, and many fiber ONTs need electricity. A backup battery can keep those devices running, but it cannot power equipment elsewhere on the provider’s network or repair a network outage. The FCC’s 2015 order concerns continuity of fixed residential voice and 911 service; it is not a guarantee of broadband availability during a power failure. FCC order

How to keep Wi-Fi on when the power goes out

  1. Check which outage you have. Use mobile data, if available, to check your utility’s outage information and your internet provider’s service status. If the ISP reports a network outage, powering your home equipment may not be enough to get online. AT&T recommends checking utility and provider outage information. AT&T outage guidance
  2. Trace your connection chain. Identify the modem or gateway and router. If you have fiber and a separate ONT, that also needs power. A battery connected only to the router will not keep the internet connection alive if the modem, gateway, or ONT loses power.
  3. Choose backup power for the equipment and duration you need. For a short interruption, connect every required device to a suitably sized UPS. Check the equipment’s power draw and the UPS manufacturer’s runtime information, and test the setup before an outage. AT&T notes that some smaller UPS units may provide only a few minutes of backup. AT&T UPS guidance
  4. Plan differently for a longer outage. A larger battery or inverter, or a generator, may keep the equipment powered longer. Actual runtime depends on battery capacity and the connected load; use the manufacturer’s runtime information for your setup rather than assuming a fixed number of hours. Plan how you will recharge batteries or supply generator fuel.
  5. Switch connections if the provider’s line is down. Use a phone hotspot, a dedicated portable hotspot, or an eligible ISP cellular-failover service if mobile coverage and your service plan support it. A hotspot uses mobile data, so limit streaming and other high-data activity if your allowance is constrained.

Compare the backup options

Option What it can keep available What to check
UPS Your existing broadband equipment, if every powered component is connected. Equipment load, outlets and output compatibility, battery capacity, and runtime. Short runtimes are possible; a UPS does not fix a provider-network outage.
Larger battery or inverter Your home networking equipment for longer than a small UPS may, depending on capacity and load. Expected load, runtime information, and a recharge plan.
Generator Powered home equipment, if it is safely connected and the provider network is operating. Fuel, safe outdoor placement, and local emergency-management guidance.
Phone hotspot A separate cellular connection for selected devices. Phone charge, cellular coverage, mobile plan, and available data.
Portable hotspot A separate cellular connection, potentially for multiple devices. Charged hardware, compatible carrier or SIM, service plan, coverage, and data allowance.
ISP cellular failover An alternate cellular path through a provider-supported setup. Current eligibility, required equipment and plan, service area, account conditions, and any data or performance limits.

Provider cellular backup is not universal

Provider features can be useful, but eligibility and what they power vary. Confirm the current terms for your account and equipment before relying on a service.

AT&T Internet Backup

AT&T says its Internet Backup feature connects an eligible AT&T Fiber setup to an associated device on an eligible AT&T Wireless unlimited data plan during a fiber outage, then returns to fiber when service is restored. The listed requirements include a BGW320 or BGW620 All-Fi Hub and setup through Smart Home Manager or the AT&T app. The feature is not presented as available to every AT&T customer. Check exactly what a provider battery powers

A provider-supplied battery may preserve only some services. Verizon says its cited Fios PowerReserve configuration provides at least 24 hours of basic voice and 911 service with 12 fresh D-cell batteries and compatible ONT equipment; Verizon explicitly says it does not power Fios Internet or TV. It should not be treated as internet backup. Verizon Fios PowerReserve details
