1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep the app’s most important safe functions working without pretending the database is healthy. Decide what each user journey can do when the database is slow, unreachable, or recovering: serve appropriately bounded stale or static data, accept a write as explicitly pending only if it can be stored durably, or return a clear failure. Then add timeouts, bounded retries and controlled recovery probes so the app does not worsen the outage.
What should your app do when its database is unavailable?
Availability during a database outage does not mean every feature must keep working. It means preserving the core journeys that can operate safely, making degraded behavior visible, and recovering without losing or duplicating work. AWS Well-Architected guidance says application components should continue their core function when dependencies are unavailable, potentially with slightly stale, alternate, or no data (AWS Well-Architected Framework, REL05-BP01).

Start by mapping database-dependent actions to an explicit outage behavior. A catalog page might display cached results with an “as of” time; a profile edit might be unavailable; a payment should not be shown as completed unless the system has durably accepted and processed it. For each journey, distinguish slow responses from failed connections and recovery: a request that exceeds its deadline is not proof that a write failed to commit, so design write handling to resolve that uncertainty safely.

Choose a fallback according to the operation’s correctness and freshness needs, not merely because a cache or queue is available.

| Approach | Useful when | Tradeoff or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Cached or static reads | A journey can tolerate data within a defined freshness bound. | Data can be stale. Do not serve a fallback that violates correctness or privacy expectations. |
| Circuit breaker plus timeout | A dependency is timing out or repeatedly failing. | Limits calls that could add load, but does not restore the database or complete the request. |
| Durable queue for writes | The product can accept delayed completion and communicate that status. | Requires idempotency, backlog limits, replay and dead-letter handling, and reconciliation. |
| Read replica | Read-only queries can use data with the replica’s freshness characteristics. | Does not replace the primary for writes; validate lag and promotion behavior. |
| Managed high-availability standby | Reduced recovery time is worth the infrastructure cost and topology constraints. | Failover takes time and can drop connections; HA does not cover every service, regional, or logical-data failure. |
Reads: make stale data an intentional choice
A cache or static response is useful only if users and downstream systems can safely act on it. Define a maximum acceptable age for each fallback and show a timestamp or other clear indication when that age matters. Keep usable local state when a refresh fails rather than replacing it with an empty result. For read-only queries, a replica may provide another source, but its lag and promotion behavior must fit the feature.
Writes: distinguish pending from complete
If a write cannot be durably accepted, return a clear failure and let the user retry. If the product supports delayed completion, persist the request in a durable queue and tell the user it is pending—not committed to the database. Use a stable idempotency key so replay cannot create duplicate effects; expose queue depth and age, cap the backlog, and define replay, dead-letter, and reconciliation procedures. AWS describes an SQS queue as one way to buffer writes while a primary database is unavailable (AWS Well-Architected guidance).

Stale reads and queued writes are not appropriate for every operation. Payments and other consistency-sensitive transactions may need to fail closed or use a separately designed workflow. A read replica, a lagging replica, a promoted server, and a primary writer have different semantics; do not treat them as interchangeable.
How do timeouts, retries, and circuit breakers limit damage?
A database that is slow can be as disruptive as one that is unreachable: requests may pile up while application workers wait, then time out together. Set deadlines for database calls and for the overall user request. Retry only when the operation is safe to retry, and bound attempts with backoff and jitter so clients do not all retry in synchrony. AWS cautions that persistent retries can add load and make recovery harder (AWS guidance on graceful degradation).

When failures persist, a circuit breaker can stop new calls to the failing dependency for a controlled interval. Probe recovery at a limited rate; when the database is healthy, close the circuit and restore normal traffic gradually. A breaker reduces pressure on the dependency, but it is not a fallback by itself: the application still needs an intentional response for each affected journey.
What does managed database high availability protect?
A standby can shorten recovery after certain infrastructure failures, but it does not make the application independent of the database. Failover can close existing client connections, so the app must detect failures, reconnect, and handle requests whose outcomes are uncertain. Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL documents that connections close during failover and that reestablishment takes approximately 60 seconds in its documented environment; actual duration can differ (Google Cloud SQL high availability).

Choose topology based on the failure domain you need to survive and the costs you can accept. Azure documents cross-zone standby for zone-level protection and same-zone standby for lower latency within a zone; a same-zone pair does not protect against that zone failing. Synchronous replication can add write or commit latency. Azure states that zone-redundant Flexible Server configurations automatically fail over within 60–120 seconds with zero data loss; this is a provider-stated behavior for that documented configuration, not a general outage guarantee (Azure Database for PostgreSQL high availability).
Before selecting a managed HA configuration, compare the failure scope (node, zone, or region), client-visible recovery time objective (RTO), acceptable recovery point objective (RPO), read freshness and write consistency, connection and DNS behavior, added latency and cost, and the operational work needed to test failover. Check regional availability and service constraints for the configuration you plan to use.

HA is not a substitute for backups. Replication can copy accidental or malicious logical changes to a standby; Azure directs users to point-in-time restore for such cases (Azure PostgreSQL HA documentation).
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you implement and test degraded mode?
- Rank database-dependent journeys. List user actions and identify which are essential, which can be deferred, and which must stop if the database is unavailable.
- Choose an explicit behavior for each action. Select a safe cached read, static response, partial result, durable queued write, or clear failure. Set freshness limits for fallback data and do not imply that an uncommitted write succeeded.
- Set deadlines and load controls. Add call and request timeouts, bounded retries with backoff and jitter, and a circuit breaker that probes recovery at a controlled rate.
- Keep degraded paths simple. Avoid making optional dependencies block core flows, and preserve usable local state if refreshing it fails.
- Make queued writes operable. Use stable request or idempotency keys, cap queues, monitor queue depth and age, and define replay, dead-letter, and reconciliation behavior.
- Configure HA for the failure domain that matters. Check availability, latency effects, costs, failover constraints, and backup and point-in-time-recovery plans before relying on a topology.
- Exercise the client-visible failure path. Simulate slow responses, connection loss, overload, failover, and recovery. Verify deadlines, reconnects, user-facing messages, queue replay, duplicate handling, and overload controls. Azure advises measuring outage from the application or client perspective; Google recommends testing overload scenarios (Azure PostgreSQL HA; Google Cloud Architecture Framework).
Track whether core journeys succeed, along with error rates, retry volume, cache age, queue depth and age, connection recovery time, and reconciliation outcomes. Google Cloud’s graceful-degradation guidance also recommends dropping excess requests at the frontend to protect backend components (Google Cloud Architecture Framework, last reviewed December 30, 2024).
