How to Keep Using Windows 10 More Safely After Support Ended

Windows 10 did not stop working when support ended, but regular security updates did. Learn how to check Windows 11 eligibility, use consumer ESU as a temporary bridge, and plan a supported next step.

Windows 10 still works after support ended on October 14, 2025, but Microsoft no longer provides regular security updates for the ended-support editions. The best way to reduce risk is to upgrade an eligible PC to Windows 11. If you need more time, Microsoft’s consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) program offers a temporary bridge for eligible personal devices, with updates scheduled through October 13, 2026. Antivirus alone cannot replace operating-system updates.

Will my Windows 10 computer stop working?

No. The end of support did not switch off Windows 10: the computer can continue to boot and run. What ended on October 14, 2025, was regular Microsoft security servicing, feature updates, and technical support for the affected editions. Without regular operating-system security fixes, the PC is more exposed to new threats. Microsoft explains what end of support means.

First check whether your PC can upgrade to Windows 11

If the device is eligible, upgrading to Windows 11 is the most direct route to a supported Windows operating system. Check Windows Update for an upgrade offer, or use Microsoft’s Windows 11 system requirements and PC Health Check guidance to assess compatibility. Hardware eligibility is only one consideration: before a major OS change, back up important files and check that essential applications and peripherals will work with Windows 11.

Can you use Windows 10 ESU as a temporary bridge?

Microsoft’s consumer ESU program provides critical and important security updates, but it is not a continuation of full Windows 10 support. Microsoft states that consumer ESU updates run through October 13, 2026, regardless of when a device enrolls. These terms reflect Microsoft’s guidance accessed October 7, 2026; availability and offers can vary by region, so check the enrollment screen on your PC and the current ESU information.

Who is eligible?

The consumer program is for eligible personal-use devices running Windows 10 version 22H2 in most markets. Organization-managed devices and devices enrolled in enterprise licensing are excluded from the consumer offer. If your PC belongs to work or is managed by an organization, ask its IT administrator about the applicable support arrangements rather than attempting consumer enrollment.

What enrollment options does Microsoft list?

Microsoft’s consumer guidance lists three routes: sync PC settings at no additional charge, redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points, or make a one-time US$30 purchase (or local-currency equivalent) plus applicable tax. A Microsoft account is required, and Microsoft says an existing consumer ESU license can be used on up to 10 devices. These are Microsoft’s stated terms, not a guarantee that every option will appear in every location or on every PC. Review the offer displayed for your device before deciding.

How to check the enrollment offer

  1. Confirm that the PC is running Windows 10 version 22H2 and is for personal use.

  2. Open Settings and check the Windows Update area for the ESU enrollment experience. Follow the options shown for your device and region.

  3. Complete the enrollment flow shown on screen. Installing an ESU-related update or licensing package alone does not enroll the device.

For late enrollment troubleshooting, Microsoft’s September 8, 2026 article about KB5126256 ESU Licensing Preparation Package says a Windows 10 22H2 security update released on or after October 14, 2025 (for example, KB5066791) must be installed before that package. The package itself does not enroll the PC or provide ongoing updates. Follow the current Settings instructions rather than installing it manually unless Microsoft’s guidance for your situation calls for it.

Does antivirus keep Windows 10 protected?

No antivirus product can restore missing Windows security fixes. Microsoft says: “While antivirus software—like Microsoft Defender or third-party tools—can help, it’s not enough on its own.” The operating system remains exposed to threats that require updates to address. Microsoft’s end-of-support guidance treats antivirus as a helpful layer, not a replacement for supported software or ESU.

Habits that can reduce some risks

While arranging an upgrade or replacement, use a standard rather than administrator account for everyday work when practical, keep browsers and applications updated, use unique passwords and multifactor authentication where available, be cautious with unexpected attachments and downloads, and keep tested backups. These are supplementary precautions; they do not reinstate Microsoft’s operating-system security updates.

Which option fits your situation?

Option What it provides Main limitation
Upgrade the current PC to Windows 11 A supported Windows operating-system path if the hardware is eligible. Check device eligibility and application or peripheral compatibility, and plan the migration.
Enroll in consumer Windows 10 ESU Critical and important security updates during the stated consumer term. Eligibility, regional enrollment terms and cost apply; updates are scheduled to end October 13, 2026.
Replace the PC with a Windows 11 computer New hardware with a supported Windows operating system. Requires a purchase and migration; it is most relevant if the old PC is ineligible or you already want to replace it.
Continue without ESU The existing computer continues to function. Microsoft no longer supplies regular security updates for the ended-support editions, leaving the system more exposed.

When should you replace the computer?

If the PC cannot run Windows 11 and ESU is unavailable or does not meet your needs, moving to a supported operating system or replacing the device is the durable choice. Microsoft recommends considering a new Windows 11 PC for hardware that cannot upgrade; replacing a computer is not necessary for every Windows 10 user. If you are considering a different operating system, check its support status and whether your essential software and peripherals are compatible before switching.

Does Microsoft 365 support mean Windows 10 is still supported?

No. Microsoft says Microsoft 365 security updates on Windows 10 are scheduled to continue through October 10, 2028. That date applies to those Microsoft 365 updates, not to Windows 10’s own operating-system support, which ended October 14, 2025. Keeping an application updated does not provide missing Windows security fixes.
