You can keep using a Chromebook after its final update, but you cannot make it equivalent to a supported device: ChromeOS and browser updates stop. First check the device’s update schedule. If support has ended, consider an eligible extended-update option or replace the Chromebook; treat continued use and operating-system alternatives as compromises that require careful limits.
Check whether your Chromebook has reached its final update
Update timing is specific to the Chromebook model, so the purchase date is not a reliable way to determine remaining support. Google describes the device’s update schedule as the most reliable way to gauge its age and remaining official support.

- Open Additional details and find Update schedule.
Google’s instructions for checking Chromebook updates cover this path. A notice that says “Final software update” means the device “won’t receive ChromeOS and browser updates anymore,” according to Google’s update schedule help.
If the Chromebook is managed by work or school, its update notice may be controlled by an administrator. Ask the administrator about the device’s policy and eligibility rather than assuming you can change its update status yourself.

Is it safe to keep using a Chromebook after updates end?
It is possible to continue using it, but once ChromeOS and browser updates stop, newly discovered security issues may not be fixed through those updates. Do not treat an expired Chromebook as fully safe or as equivalent to one still receiving updates.
Google’s advice is that “You can continue using your computer but should consider upgrading,” in its guidance on using or upgrading an old Chromebook. The UK National Cyber Security Centre takes a more cautious position and recommends replacing devices after their automatic update period ends in its ChromeOS security guidance. That recommendation is UK guidance; the core support limitation is that updates and technical support have ended.

What Google’s 10-year update policy does—and does not—mean
Google announced in 2023 that Chromebooks would receive 10 years of automatic updates after platform release, beginning in 2024. Google also said some older devices already in use could have an option to extend updates after their last automatic update. This policy is not a reason to assume every Chromebook has the same remaining support: check the schedule shown for the specific device. See Google’s policy announcement.

Google’s ChromeOS Flex installation information is presented for PCs and Macs. It does not establish that a particular Chromebook can be converted or that its hardware will work with Flex. See Google’s ChromeOS Flex page before considering that route, and verify device-specific compatibility rather than assuming it.

Linux is another possible technical path, but suitability depends on the Chromebook, firmware, installation method, and who will provide ongoing security maintenance. The available official guidance here does not establish a universal compatibility list or safe installation procedure. If you cannot verify support and maintain the system, do not rely on an operating-system change as a security fix.

Before choosing, weigh whether the path provides current security maintenance, whether it removes apps or changes your workflow, and whether your exact model is compatible. Also consider the Chromebook’s condition, your needs, and the cost of replacement. If you need a simple supported ChromeOS route, a replacement Chromebook is the clearest fit; verify its update schedule before purchase.
