Treat identity and art style as separate controls; a seed alone will not lock a character’s appearance.
Build a reusable character reference
Before generating a sequence, decide which visual details define the character and keep them stable. OpenAI’s image-prompting guidance recommends a reusable character reference for multi-illustration work, with appearance, proportions, outfit, and overall tone specified and repeated as scenes change. OpenAI’s image prompting guide offers this as practical guidance, not a guarantee of identical results.

- Species or age presentation, where relevant
- Face shape, hair, and distinctive marks
- Body proportions and silhouette
- Signature clothing and accessories
- A defining color palette
Keep the wording for these traits consistent from image to image. If a feature is meant to change—such as a coat for a winter scene—state that change deliberately rather than allowing it to drift by omission.

Separate the character from the scene
Structure each prompt in two parts: an identity block that describes who the character is, followed by scene instructions that describe what changes. The scene can specify action, location, framing, lighting, or mood without rewriting the character’s defining traits.
For example, reuse the same identity block for a small fox with a cream muzzle, a notch in its left ear, a teal scarf, and a compact build. Then vary only the scene: “standing in a rainy city street,” “running through a meadow,” or “sitting beside a campfire.” These examples illustrate prompt organization; they do not promise exact visual matches.

When checking a new image, compare identity-critical details against the reference. If the face, proportions, markings, or signature outfit have shifted, regenerate or edit the image rather than treating the drift as a new canonical design.
Use an identity reference feature where supported
If your generator offers a character or subject reference control, use the approved reference image alongside the identity block. Check the model version and its current documentation before relying on a particular feature: controls and compatibility can change between versions.

Midjourney
Midjourney’s current documentation says Omni Reference can bring a character or other subject from a reference image into a generation, and that it is compatible with Version 7. For V8.X, Midjourney recommends Edit Model instead. Omni Reference is listed as using twice the GPU time of regular Version 7 images, and Midjourney notes incompatibilities with some editing controls. See Midjourney’s Omni Reference documentation for the current feature details.
Do not treat older character-reference syntax as universal: Midjourney’s earlier --cref method is associated with prior models such as Version 6 and 6.1, while the current guidance distinguishes Version 7 and V8.X.

OpenAI image prompting
OpenAI’s guide supports the reusable-reference approach: define a character’s appearance, proportions, outfit, and tone, then repeat those defining details as the story changes. The cited guidance does not state a numerical consistency rate or guarantee identity fidelity.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhy a seed does not preserve identity
A seed can help control the initial noise in an image-generation process, which can be useful when comparing prompt changes under otherwise similar conditions. It is not a saved character identity. Midjourney says seeds cannot bookmark a specific character or appearance across different prompts and have limited effect on final consistency; prompt, model-version, or setting changes can still produce unexpected differences. Its Seeds documentation recommends treating seeds as an experimentation aid rather than the main way to preserve a character.
Best Value
When diagnosing drift, keep prompt wording and other settings steady so you can identify which change affected the result. A fixed seed may make that comparison more controlled, but the reusable identity description and supported reference control do the character-preservation work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep visual style consistent separately
A style reference can help a sequence share colors, textures, lighting, or medium, but it does not necessarily preserve who appears in the image. Midjourney says its Style Reference guides overall style and does not copy people or objects; see Midjourney’s Style Reference documentation. Adobe likewise describes style references as a way to build a consistent look across generated assets in its Firefly reference-image guide.
If a project needs both a recurring character and a unified art direction, use an identity reference for the subject and a separate style reference for the visual treatment where the tool supports both. A consistent illustration style is not evidence that the character’s identity has remained consistent.
A practical workflow for a multi-image sequence
- Approve one reference. Choose a clear character sheet or image and reuse it throughout the sequence.
- Write the identity block. Record the stable face, hair, proportions, markings, clothing, and palette. Keep this text unchanged unless the design itself is meant to evolve.
- Add only the new scene. Describe the pose, action, place, framing, and lighting separately from the identity block.
- Check the generator’s model and reference controls. Use the current identity-reference feature for that model, if available, rather than assuming another version’s controls apply.
- Change one variable at a time while troubleshooting. Keep wording and settings steady where possible; a seed can help make experiments more controlled, but does not lock identity.
- Review and correct drift. Compare the output with the reference on the details that make the character recognizable, then regenerate or edit when necessary.
- Add a style reference only if needed. Use it for shared visual treatment, not as a substitute for character identity guidance.
There is no basis in these vendor guides for ranking image generators by character consistency across platforms: they do not provide a controlled cross-platform benchmark. Results depend on the generator, model version, reference controls, prompts, and settings.
