Super Chat does not automatically put an alert over your video: it highlights a viewer’s message in YouTube Live Chat. To show an alert on the stream itself, configure an overlay or notification source in your streaming setup, then verify it in the actual program output. YouTube documents a browser-source workflow for overlays, but not one universal procedure that guarantees Super Chat alerts in every 24/7 setup.
Super Chat in chat is different from an on-video alert
A Super Chat highlights a viewer’s message in live chat; a Super Sticker displays an animated image there. Neither is inherently an alert rendered over the video. An on-video alert requires a separate overlay or notification workflow in the encoder or streaming software. YouTube’s general monetization guidance covers Super Chat and Super Stickers, while its overlay instructions describe adding a browser source; those instructions are not a universal Super Chat alert recipe. Check channel and stream eligibility first
- In YouTube Studio or Live Control Room, confirm Super Chat and Super Stickers are enabled for the channel and the live stream. Availability depends on eligibility and settings; consult YouTube’s monetization guidance.
- Check the stream’s audience setting. If the stream or its audience is made for kids, YouTube disables live chat and Super Chat. See YouTube Help: Avoid restrictions on YouTube live streaming.
Configure an overlay and verify it in the output
Use YouTube’s documented browser-source steps where applicable
- Open the stream’s settings in Live Control Room and copy the overlay URL provided there.
- In your encoder, add a Browser Source and paste the URL.
- Set the browser source’s width and height to match the stream resolution, then position it in the layout.
- Check the encoder’s program output. Confirm the source is visible, sized as intended, not cropped, and not covered by another source or scene element.
YouTube’s cited browser-source instructions concern its break overlay, not a guaranteed Super Chat alert setup. Browser-source support varies by encoder. Consult the current official instructions for your chosen encoder and alert provider, and test the exact channel and configuration before relying on it. For third-party notifications, confirm the exact event and display behavior
YouTube lists Streamlabs for on-screen notification popups, StreamElements for overlays, and says Super Chat works with IFTTT. That listing does not establish that a particular current setup supports Super Chat events end to end, or that it will render them over your video. Before choosing a tool, check its current official documentation for Super Chat event support, encoder and browser-source compatibility, visibility in your output layout, and testing or recovery steps. Check where viewers are watching
YouTube says live chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players. Viewers watching an embed therefore cannot be assumed to see the chat there. A separate alert layered over the video needs its own configuration and testing. YouTube Help: Learn about live streams
Troubleshoot alerts that do not appear
- Super Chats appear in chat, but not over the video: chat highlighting alone does not create an on-video alert. Check whether the alert provider supports Super Chat events and whether its source is present in the encoder output.
- The browser source is blank or unsupported: encoder support for browser sources varies. Check the encoder’s current documentation and test a supported configuration.
- The alert is cropped, hidden, or the wrong size: match the source dimensions to the stream resolution and inspect its position, layering, and visibility in the program output.
- Chat and Super Chat are unavailable: verify the channel and stream’s eligibility and settings, and check whether the audience is set as made for kids.
- Alerts seem absent for viewers using an embed: live chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not embedded players; check the separate on-video overlay rather than assuming chat is displayed in the embed.
