On an Ubuntu or Debian VPS, install FFmpeg from the operating system’s package repository, verify the available encoders, and publish to the RTMPS address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. For a 24/7 stream, run FFmpeg under a service manager and monitor both the VPS and YouTube: restarting a crashed process does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. The setup is the same in India as elsewhere; the provider’s sustained outbound capacity, transfer terms, and route to YouTube determine whether a particular VPS is suitable.
What you need before installing FFmpeg
- An Ubuntu or Debian VPS with sudo access. Package versions and enabled codecs vary by release and repository, so verify the installed binary rather than assuming a particular version or encoder.
- A video file you are permitted to stream, plus enough disk space if you plan to store it on the VPS.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours; complete that step before scheduling a launch. YouTube’s setup guide
- A stream URL and key obtained for the actual stream from YouTube Live Control Room. Choose RTMPS and do not rely on an old ingest URL copied from a tutorial. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance
FFmpeg’s download page points users to official Ubuntu and Debian package sources for standard installations. A source build is an option when you require a particular version or feature set, but it involves configuring, compiling, and installing FFmpeg; optional external codec libraries are not enabled by default in a source build. FFmpeg download page · FFmpeg installation instructions
Install FFmpeg from the Ubuntu or Debian repository
- Update package metadata:
sudo apt update. - Install the package:
sudo apt install ffmpeg. - Check the installed version:
ffmpeg -version. - Check that the build has the encoders needed by your command:
ffmpeg -encoders | grep -E 'libx264|aac'. Iflibx264is absent, an example that explicitly uses that encoder will fail; check the codecs available from your configured repositories or choose a suitable FFmpeg build.
APT is Ubuntu’s package-management system, and package versions and available codecs depend on the operating-system release and enabled repositories. Ubuntu APT documentation · Ubuntu FFmpeg page
Choose YouTube-compatible video and audio settings
Set the output resolution and frame rate deliberately, then match the encoder settings to them. YouTube’s current guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), H.264 as a supported video codec, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. It also recommends testing representative motion and audio and checking stream health. The platform’s figures are recommendations, not a guarantee that a VPS route will sustain the stream. | H.264 output | YouTube recommended ingest bitrate | YouTube minimum bitrate setting |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
These are H.264 values in YouTube’s bitrate table, whose page does not display a publication year; the page was accessed on 2026-10-03. Do not treat the minimum as the recommended target or apply one bitrate to every resolution and frame rate. Allow headroom for sustained network delivery, and confirm the resulting stream in Live Control Room.
Publish a file to YouTube with FFmpeg
The following is an illustrative 1080p30 command shape, not a tested one-size-fits-all recipe. It assumes a 30 fps source, an FFmpeg build with libx264 and AAC support, and an environment variable containing the complete RTMPS URL supplied for your YouTube stream, including its key. It uses YouTube’s 14 Mbps recommended H.264 ingest bitrate for 1080p30. At 30 fps, -g 60 sets a two-second GOP. Adjust frame rate, bitrate, GOP, scaling, and audio to match your source and selected output.

export YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL='paste-the-full-RTMPS-URL-from-YouTube-here'
ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 14000k -maxrate 14000k -bufsize 28000k
-g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL"
-re reads the file at its native playback rate rather than sending it as fast as the server can process it. The command does not loop the file: it ends when the input ends. FFmpeg documents real-time file streaming and RTMPS as an encrypted RTMP protocol. FFmpeg protocol documentation
Protect the stream key. Avoid putting a real key directly in a command that may be retained in shell history or visible in process listings and logs. Restrict access to any environment or key file, and do not publish it in scripts, support requests, or screenshots. If YouTube drops or you suspect the key has been exposed, use Live Control Room to check the stream and manage its connection details.

Loop the video and keep the process recoverable
Looping a single file
For a single prerecorded file, FFmpeg’s input loop option can repeat the file indefinitely. Put -stream_loop -1 before the input option:
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i /path/to/input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 14000k -maxrate 14000k -bufsize 28000k
-g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL"
This repeats the same input; it does not create a varied playlist or make an unsuitable file YouTube-compliant. Check the file’s duration, audio, frame rate, and content rights before relying on a repeated stream. If you need several items or transitions, build and test the relevant FFmpeg input and filter setup rather than assuming a single-file loop will behave like a playlist.

Run FFmpeg under a service manager
For a continuous service, configure the command as a system service or use another process manager suitable for your VPS. Use a least-privilege account, keep key material in a restricted environment file, enable restart on process failure, and write logs to a location with rotation. Confirm the manager’s restart behavior and log path using its documentation for your operating-system version; those details vary by service manager and configuration.
A restart policy recovers from a process exit, not from every cause of a failed stream. It cannot by itself fix bad input, exhausted CPU, a broken route, VPS maintenance, or a YouTube ingest interruption. Test a full start-to-finish stream before leaving it unattended, monitor the service and network on the VPS, and check stream health in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its setup guidance does not promise automatic archival for streams longer than 12 hours. YouTube setup guide

Check an Indian VPS before committing to a long stream
An “India VPS” label does not establish that a plan can sustain a particular stream. The available official documentation does not rank Indian VPS cities or providers, and no provider-wide performance conclusion follows from the location alone. Test from the instance and evaluate the plan on the route and workload you will actually use.
- Sustained outbound throughput and stability: test toward the current YouTube ingest endpoint and confirm the route can hold the chosen bitrate, including ordinary variation in delivery.
- Transfer allowance and terms: check included outbound transfer, overage charges, fair-use terms, and any restrictions on continuous video traffic. A stream running all month can consume substantial transfer.
- CPU capacity: if FFmpeg transcodes with software encoding, check CPU headroom at the chosen resolution and frame rate. Simply sending compatible video may require less work than transcoding, but the command and source determine the load.
- Storage and logs: account for source media and log retention on the VPS, and ensure logs rotate rather than filling the disk.
- Maintenance and recovery: understand provider maintenance behavior, reboot expectations, and whether the instance returns automatically after a host event.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
ffmpeg: command not found |
FFmpeg is not installed, or the executable is not on the service account’s path. | Run sudo apt install ffmpeg, then verify with ffmpeg -version. Check the path and execution environment used by the service manager. |
Unknown encoder libx264 |
The installed FFmpeg build does not expose that encoder. | Check ffmpeg -encoders; use a build with the required encoder or select an encoder that is actually available and supported for your workflow. |
| Authentication or connection failure | The URL or key may be wrong, stale, incomplete, or not the one for the selected YouTube stream. | Copy the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room, check that the complete URL reaches FFmpeg securely, and confirm the intended stream is active. |
| SSL error while connecting | Connection or TLS handling may be incompatible with the endpoint or port in use. | Use the RTMPS details from YouTube and, for relevant SSL errors, follow YouTube’s advice to try port 443. YouTube RTMPS troubleshooting |
| Stream health reports insufficient or unstable delivery | The VPS route may not sustain the configured bitrate, or the server may be overloaded. | Check outbound stability and CPU use from the actual VPS, verify the output bitrate matches the selected resolution and frame rate, and reduce or correct the output settings if needed. |
| Stream stops when the video ends | The command is publishing a finite input without a loop. | For a single-file repeat, add -stream_loop -1 before -i; monitor for file-specific errors and confirm the output remains healthy. |
| Process keeps restarting but the stream remains down | Automatic restarts may be repeating a bad command, unreadable input, resource problem, or persistent network/ingest failure. | Inspect service logs and FFmpeg stderr, verify file permissions and available disk/CPU, then confirm network and YouTube status rather than relying on restarts alone. |
| Long stream is missing an expected archive | YouTube’s setup guidance only states automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. | Do not assume a stream longer than 12 hours will be automatically archived; check YouTube’s current Live Control Room and setup guidance for the applicable handling. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If maintaining a VPS and FFmpeg service is not the goal, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live; its cloud service loops the uploaded video, so no home computer, OBS, or home connection needs to stay on. It is YouTube-only and plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera.
