If sleep earbuds keep falling out, first check that the ear tips and any stabilizing wings are attached correctly, then try the included sizes and follow the maker’s insertion instructions. A secure fit should feel comfortable—not painful or forceful. Side-sleepers should also account for pillow pressure, which can shift an earbud or make it uncomfortable.
Check the parts and try different sizes
- Remove the earbud and inspect its parts. Confirm that the ear tip and any stabilizing wing are the right parts for that model and are fully seated. A loose or incorrectly fitted piece can undermine the fit.
- Try the supplied sizes one at a time. Check each ear separately; the two ears do not necessarily need the same size. Look for a fit that feels stable without strong pressure. If a size causes pain or persistent itching, remove it and try another.
- Use the manufacturer’s wearing method. Follow the instructions for the specific model rather than assuming all earbuds insert the same way.
For example, soundcore’s Sleep A20 product page describes interchangeable tips and wings and a three-step method that ends with a twist to lock. That twist is specific to the A20 instructions; do not apply it to another model unless its maker recommends it. soundcore’s wearing guide also advises choosing tips and wings suited to your ears and sleeping position.

Adjust for side-sleeping pressure
Lying on your side can press an earbud against the pillow, shifting it or making an otherwise workable fit uncomfortable. If that happens, try a softer pillow and a different head position, then reassess whether the earbud stays put comfortably. soundcore support suggests a softer pillow for side-sleeping pressure, but this is a troubleshooting option—not a guarantee that an earbud will remain in place.

Know when to stop trying to make it fit
A fit should not hurt. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders says earplugs should feel comfortable and secure, may take practice to fit, and should never be forced. That guidance concerns hearing protectors such as earplugs, not a clinical assessment of all-night earbud use; it is a conservative guide to comfort and insertion, not proof that sleeping in consumer earbuds is safe for everyone or for any particular duration. NIDCD’s hearing-protector guidance explains these fit principles.
#1 Best Overall
- SIDE-SLEEPER FIT THAT STAYS PUT ALL NIGHT. Just 1.6g and flush to your ear, so you can roll over without soreness or pop-out. Four soft ear tip sizes for a secure, personal fit.
- MASKS SNORING, TRAFFIC, AND CITY NOISE. A steady sound shield holds all night long, tuned for the low rumble of partner snoring. Consistent sound keeps the noises that usually wake you from reaching you.
- 14-HOUR BATTERY LASTS THE WHOLE NIGHT. No waking up to a dead bud at 3am. A private in-ear alarm wakes only you, at a volume you set, without disturbing your partner.
- 50+ SLEEP SOUNDS, OR STREAM YOUR OWN. White noise, nature, and calm tones for sleep or meditation, plus music and podcasts over Bluetooth. A sleep timer fades audio as you drift off, then switches to masking.
- PURPOSE-BUILT FOR SLEEP, NOT ADAPTED FROM DAYTIME EARBUDS. The Smart Case measures bedroom noise, light, and temperature overnight, and the Ozlo app (iOS + Android) turns it into sleep insights that sharpen with use.
If no included size stays in place comfortably, do not push the earbud deeper or keep wearing a painful one. Consider a sleep-focused model with multiple tip and stabilizer sizes, or choose a noise-management option that does not sit in the ear canal.
What to look for if you choose another sleep-earbud model
Fit varies with both ear anatomy and the earbud’s design, so no model can be promised to stay in every person’s ears overnight. When comparing options, focus on:

- Included fit parts: Check which tip and stabilizer sizes come with the model.
- Clear insertion instructions: Look for model-specific guidance on angle, placement, and any locking movement.
- Comfort in your ears: The fit should be stable without pain or excessive pressure; an advertised size range cannot guarantee a fit for you.
Check exact model compatibility before buying replacement tips or wings. A published study of at-home generic ear-EEG sleep-monitoring devices describes variation in ear anatomy, use of several earpiece sizes, and one case in which excessive movement dislodged an earpiece. Those were research devices, not ordinary consumer Bluetooth sleep earbuds, so the study supports the general relevance of anatomy and movement but does not measure consumer-earbud retention. Mikkelsen et al.’s study provides that research-device context.
