Keep credentials and sensitive data out of every place an AI system can read—not just the message you type. That includes system prompts, project files, open files, terminal output, and tool context. Store secrets outside the assistant’s reach, configure the product’s own exclusions, limit its permissions, and verify what it sends.
What can expose secrets to an AI context window?
A coding assistant may receive more than the file currently on screen. Depending on the product and its settings, context can include project structure, open files, and terminal output. A secret can therefore enter the conversation indirectly—for example, when a tool reads a configuration file or prints an environment value.

Chat prompts and system prompts are also model-visible. Microsoft Learn advises: “Never paste API keys, passwords, or connection strings into a prompt.” It warns that credentials in prompts may appear in logs, including in private sessions. OWASP likewise says a system prompt should not be treated as secret or used as a security control. How to keep secrets out of prompts and project context
1. Replace real values in prompts
Use placeholders when asking for help with code or configuration. For example, replace a real token with YOUR_API_KEY and a connection string with REDACTED_CONNECTION_STRING. Do not paste passwords, private keys, customer records, or other sensitive data to make a debugging example more realistic.

2. Store credentials outside AI-readable project files
Keep credentials in a vault, encrypted secret store, or runtime credential facility rather than in a file inside a project tree the assistant can read. The appropriate option depends on the application and deployment environment. Microsoft Learn lists environment variables and Azure Key Vault as examples for server-side and CI service credentials, and Windows.Security.Credentials.PasswordVault for a Windows app. OWASP Secure Coding with AI Cheat Sheet; Microsoft Learn.
3. Set exclusions in the AI product
Use the assistant’s own context-exclusion settings to block secret-bearing files and directories. OWASP gives these as examples of sensitive patterns to exclude:

Product names and coverage vary; OWASP refers to tool-specific mechanisms such as .cursorignore and .copilotignore. Check the current documentation for your assistant and confirm how its exclusions apply. Exclusions reduce accidental exposure, but they do not replace access controls. Give the assistant only the files and capabilities required for its current task. For tool-enabled agents, enforce authentication, authorization, privilege separation, and action limits in deterministic systems outside the model.

Keep requests specific and bounded. Treat content supplied by websites, documents, or other third parties as potentially untrusted: prompt injection can introduce malicious instructions through material placed in context. Review actions that transmit information or affect external systems before confirming them. OpenAI’s guidance recommends least access, clear task scope, and review of consequential actions; these safeguards are provider-specific and should not be assumed to describe every AI product. How to verify your protections
- Read the product’s current data-flow documentation. Determine what files, project information, and tool output can be sent as context.
- Inspect outbound context where feasible. Use available request logging or a network proxy to check what leaves your environment, subject to your organization’s policies.
- Test the workflow with adversarial inputs. Confirm that exclusions, permission limits, and external authorization controls behave as intended. OpenAI recommends adversarial testing and cautions against relying on input filtering alone. OpenAI API: Safety best practices.
- Use a safe canary if a test must track a secret-like value. Do not put a real credential into a test unless the test is controlled and the value is a safe canary.
When a different deployment boundary may be needed
For classified, regulated, or highly sensitive code, OWASP recommends considering self-hosted or air-gapped coding tools. A product label alone does not establish that a deployment is safe: check the actual data flows and obtain organizational approval for the intended use. OWASP Secure Coding with AI Cheat Sheet.
