Keep the exception narrow, protect other routes, and treat login and page-rendering delays as separate problems. If a third-party site blocks automation, seek permission or an official access method rather than trying to evade its controls.
Why a scheduled screenshot gets a CAPTCHA or bot challenge
A screenshot renderer can capture only what its browser is permitted to load. The destination site’s CDN or web application firewall (WAF) may identify automated browser traffic and return a challenge, denial, or other response instead of the page. A screenshot that appears blank is not, by itself, proof of a bot block: a login redirect, timeout, or unfinished JavaScript rendering can look similar.

Cloudflare says its Browser Run requests are always identified as bot traffic. For a site you operate, its FAQ describes a WAF skip rule based on Browser Run’s method-specific Bot Detection ID; the FAQ says using the required Bot Management fields requires an Enterprise plan. Diagnose the failure before changing a rule
- Inspect the captured page and job logs. Look for a CAPTCHA or challenge page, access-denied response, login redirect, timeout, or an application that has loaded only partway. Identify what the browser actually received before deciding on a fix.
- Confirm authorization and who controls the destination. If you own the site, identify its CDN/WAF and involve the security or site administrator. If someone else owns it, ask for permission or an official way to access the content.
- Separate access from rendering. A challenge or denial calls for an authorized access-policy change; a login redirect calls for an approved authentication flow; missing content on an otherwise accessible page may require waiting for rendering to finish.
- Make one authorized test capture. Inspect the result before enabling or restoring the recurring schedule.
Allowlist an authorized capture service narrowly
For a site you administer, prefer a verifiable service identity over a user-agent string or a broad IP exception. Configure the CDN/WAF to recognize that identity, and scope any skip or allow rule to the capture service and the routes it needs. Keep ordinary protections in place for unrelated traffic and private endpoints.

Cloudflare Browser Run
Cloudflare’s Browser Run FAQ documents a WAF skip rule for an operator’s own zone using the service’s method-specific Bot Detection ID. The same FAQ says the needed Bot Management fields require Enterprise. Check the current Cloudflare documentation and your zone’s available rule fields before implementing the exception; detection IDs, plan gates, and dashboard details can change. Do not assume that changing a browser user-agent or rotating addresses is an equivalent fix. Cloudflare says Browser Run does not offer per-request IP rotation, and superficial fingerprint changes do not establish permission or provide a dependable allowlist.

Signed agents
Where a capture agent supports cryptographically signed requests, validate the signature rather than trusting a copyable user-agent. OpenAI documents Web Bot Auth for ChatGPT Work’s Cloud browser using RFC 9421 HTTP Message Signatures. Its requests include Signature, Signature-Input, and Signature-Agent: "https://chatgpt.com"; the site operator can validate signatures against the published key directory. OpenAI also documents provider-specific integrations for Akamai, Cloudflare, HUMAN, and Vercel. Proxies between the agent and site must preserve the signature headers. Handle login requirements separately
A WAF allowlist does not authenticate the browser to an account. If the page legitimately requires login, use the capture service’s supported credential mechanism and credentials you are authorized to use. Cloudflare’s screenshot endpoint documents cookies, HTTP Basic Auth, and an authorization header for authenticated captures. Wait for the page to finish rendering
JavaScript-heavy sites may return their initial HTML before the content you want appears. Cloudflare documents domcontentloaded as the default navigation wait; that event can occur before JavaScript rendering is complete. Use the documented gotoOptions to choose an appropriate navigation wait, then wait for a page-specific ready condition or expected content before saving the screenshot. A fixed delay can help with predictable pages, but a selector or other explicit ready condition is usually easier to diagnose when content load times vary. Cloudflare navigation and wait options
Choose the capture interface for the job
A one-off, stateless screenshot is different from an authenticated workflow or a scripted browser session. Cloudflare recommends Quick Actions for simple screenshot, PDF, or scraping tasks; browser sessions controlled through Playwright, Puppeteer, or CDP are suited to work that needs more browser control. Its FAQ also describes Cloudflare Queues for asynchronous batches. Choose based on whether the job needs state, credentials, page-specific interaction, or batch processing rather than assuming every screenshot should use the same interface. Troubleshoot common scheduled-capture failures

Put the fix into the schedule safely
- Record which identity or rule authorizes the capture and which routes it covers.
- Keep credentials in the capture service’s protected configuration, not in public URLs, screenshots, or shared logs.
- After a policy or provider integration changes, run one capture and inspect the result before restoring the schedule.
- Monitor challenge rates, authentication failures, rendering failures, and WAF rule changes so an expired credential or changed policy does not go unnoticed.
- Coordinate with the security owner if the provider identity, rule scope, rate limits, concurrency, or available WAF features are unclear.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a screenshot service capture a page behind a login?
Yes, when you are authorized to access the page and the capture service supports an approved authentication method. Authentication is separate from WAF allowlisting.
Should I change the screenshot browser’s user-agent to get past a CAPTCHA?
No. A user-agent change does not prove authorization or create a reliable, supported allowlist. Coordinate with the site operator instead.
