Usually, you cannot make a disc-based game work on a digital-only console by plugging in a generic USB disc drive. The workable options depend on the exact console: Sony’s separately sold PS5 drive supports specific slim Digital Edition models, Xbox Series S does not play discs, and Xbox has announced a digital-entitlement option for some supported Xbox One and Series X discs. Check your model and the game’s eligibility before spending money.
Can you play disc games on a digital-only console?
In most cases, not directly. A game disc is both the game media and, on supported systems, the license check; a digital-only console has no built-in reader. The manufacturer documentation cited here does not establish an ordinary USB optical drive as a way to read console game discs. Use only a drive the console maker explicitly supports.

Attach and pair the official drive
Sony says the drive enables disc-based games, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD playback. An internet connection is required for the initial pairing. Follow the instructions for your model when attaching it; Sony’s CFI-21XX manual explains the physical connection and handling. PS5 CFI-21XX instruction manual
Can you use an external disc drive with Xbox Series S?

Can you convert an Xbox disc game to digital?
Xbox announced a disc-to-digital entitlement route for supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X games. To claim an eligible game, insert its disc into an Xbox One or Series X and launch the game. The announcement says the initial catalog includes thousands of titles, but not every title qualifies; it does not publish a complete eligibility list or all claim conditions. Check whether you already own a digital license
If you previously bought the game digitally, sign in to the account that made the purchase and check your game library. Sony says PlayStation Store PS4 purchases appear in the user’s library after sign-in, and compatible digital PS4 games can be played on PS5. Sony support: playing PS4 games on PS5
A digital purchase and a physical disc are different licenses. In particular, Sony says a PS4 Blu-ray disc cannot be used to redeem a PS5 upgrade on a PS5 Digital Edition; that upgrade process requires a disc-equipped PS5. Sony support: upgrading a PS4 game to its PS5 version

If your console is a Series S, plan on a digital license, an eligible Xbox entitlement claimed through disc-equipped hardware, or a disc-equipped compatible console. If it is a compatible PS5 slim Digital Edition, Sony’s official add-on drive may preserve access to your discs. In either case, verify the exact model and title first; prices, availability, compatibility, and platform terms can change.
