To keep an OBS stream running through a power cut, put both the streaming computer and the modem/router on a UPS or another suitable backup supply. Size it for the devices’ actual combined load and the runtime you need. A UPS only bridges an outage for as long as its battery lasts, and it cannot fix an internet-service outage. After power returns, check OBS and YouTube Studio rather than assuming the same live event resumed.
What a power cut can interrupt
There are two separate links to protect: power to the encoder and network equipment, and the internet connection from your home or studio to YouTube. If the PC loses power, OBS stops encoding and sending video. If the modem or router loses power, the PC may remain on but lose its route to the internet. A UPS for the PC alone does not protect networking gear that is plugged into an unbacked outlet.
OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, says dropped frames or intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote stream ingest server. A local mains cut can therefore stop the encoder, disrupt the router, or coincide with an internet-link failure; those problems need to be checked separately.
Choose backup power for your real load
A UPS supplies battery power when mains power fails, but its runtime depends on the load and the equipment. Schneider Electric India’s UPS buying guide advises totaling the wattage of the devices to be protected, choosing suitable capacity with headroom, and checking runtime against the expected load. It does not establish one runtime that applies to every streaming setup.

- List the devices that must remain on. Include the streaming PC and the modem/router. Add any other network equipment your internet connection requires.
- Work out their simultaneous watt load. Use device ratings or reliable power measurements, and select a UPS with capacity appropriate to that load rather than choosing by a headline VA figure alone.
- Set a realistic runtime target. Check the UPS manufacturer’s runtime information at your expected load. More connected equipment means less runtime; battery age and operating conditions can also affect performance.
- Check the outlets. Plug the PC and network equipment into outlets backed by the UPS battery, not outlets that provide surge protection only.
- Plan for longer cuts. If the target outage lasts longer than the UPS can support at your load, consider another suitable backup source. Do not treat a desktop UPS as unlimited power.
A separate battery backup for a modem or router may be an option if the main UPS does not power it. Before buying one, verify compatibility with the device label and manufacturer documentation, including output voltage, current, polarity, and connector. The available guidance supports these selection principles, not a particular model or guaranteed runtime.
Reduce network-related interruptions
Connect the streaming computer to the router over Ethernet where practical. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. Check cables, the router/modem, network adapters, and other equipment if the connection remains unreliable; an uninterrupted power supply cannot keep an internet connection alive if the ISP’s service itself is down.

Keep OBS and the YouTube Live Control Room available for monitoring. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend setting up encoder streams in advance, starting the encoder early, checking the Live Control Room preview, and monitoring audio and video quality. Test the backup arrangement safely before relying on it during an actual outage.
What to do when power returns
- Restore the chain in order. Confirm that the PC, modem/router, and internet service are back. Then check whether OBS is connected and sending. If not, inspect OBS’s connection status and log.
- Check the event in YouTube Studio. Open the relevant Live Control Room event and inspect its preview and stream health. Confirm that video and audio are reaching YouTube and establish what viewers can see before announcing that the stream is back.
- Reconnect OBS if needed. Restore the configured encoder connection and check the event again. Do not expose your stream key while troubleshooting; use YouTube’s account controls to manage the key if it needs replacing.
- Check the local recording. Verify that the recording or archive file exists and is intact before closing applications. YouTube recommends checking that the local archive is growing during encoder-stream preparation.
- Separate encoder from internet problems. YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder output and outbound internet connection separately. If the encoder output looks healthy but YouTube receives a poor or absent stream, investigate the connection and contact your ISP if the issue persists.
The official OBS and YouTube guidance cited here does not specify a universal recovery window after a complete PC power loss or guarantee that restarting OBS will resume the same live event. Verify the event’s actual state in Studio rather than relying on a timer or assumption.

Test before you depend on the setup
- Run a test stream and check the Live Control Room preview and stream health.
- Confirm that the local recording is being written and that the event is accessible.
- Test the UPS arrangement under controlled conditions, checking that both the PC and networking equipment stay powered.
- If you use encoder failover, YouTube recommends testing it by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then checking that the player switches to the backup encoder.
- Keep watching audio and video quality during the stream; a preview that starts successfully is not a substitute for monitoring.
