Recommended Free Tools
For a 4K60 SDR YouTube Live stream, set OBS to 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, use RTMPS with constant bitrate (CBR), and set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at that resolution and frame rate. For a local recording, use MKV when protection against an interrupted recording matters, then remux it to MP4 in OBS if your editor or upload workflow needs MP4.
Recommended OBS settings for a 4K60 YouTube Live stream
Use these as the starting point for an SDR broadcast. YouTube’s bitrate figures are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your internet connection or encoder can sustain them. Its live encoder guidance was accessed on October 3, 2026: YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.
| Setting | Recommended starting point | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution and frame rate | 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps | This is 4K/2160p at 60 frames per second. |
| Protocol | RTMPS | YouTube documents RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and recommends RTMPS for encryption in transit. |
| Rate control | CBR | Use constant bitrate for the live output. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. |
| Video codec and bitrate | H.264: 50 Mbps recommended; AV1 or H.265/HEVC: 35 Mbps recommended | Choose a codec that your OBS encoder and hardware actually offer. YouTube’s table also lists minimum settings of 14 Mbps for H.264 and 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 4K60; these are minimums, not the recommended targets. |
| Audio | AAC or MP3; stereo at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz | YouTube’s advanced guidance lists 128 Kbps stereo audio and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. For 5.1 audio it lists 384 Kbps at 48 kHz and says RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 is supported only with AAC. |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit | Use YouTube’s SDR guidance for standard dynamic range content. |
YouTube’s advanced recommendations also include square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. Apply these only when your selected OBS encoder exposes compatible controls. YouTube automatically detects encoder settings by default and transcodes the incoming stream for viewers.
Set up OBS output for streaming
OBS labels and available controls can differ by version, operating system, and encoder. In OBS, open Settings → Output and select Advanced output mode if you need separate streaming and recording controls. Choose a video encoder that is available on your system, then configure its streaming controls for the values above. Set the output resolution and frame rate in Settings → Video.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Choose H.264 if it is the compatible option for your encoder and workflow; select AV1 or HEVC only if OBS and your hardware expose it and YouTube accepts the incoming stream.
- Set the live encoder’s rate control to CBR and keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Set the codec-specific bitrate to YouTube’s recommended target if your connection and encoder can maintain it.
- Use RTMPS as the YouTube ingest protocol where available, and select the matching YouTube server and stream key in OBS.
- For SDR, keep the color settings aligned with Rec. 709 and 8-bit. Avoid changing advanced encoder parameters unless OBS exposes them and you know they are compatible with the selected encoder.
Find the stream key in YouTube Studio’s live control room or the stream setup for the broadcast you are preparing, and enter it in OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to broadcast to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before going live again.
Choose a local recording format and quality
Container: MKV for resilience, MP4 when needed
For a local capture, MKV is a sensible default when an ungraceful stop is a concern. OBS says an MKV recording will not corrupt the whole file if recording does not stop gracefully. If your editing program or upload workflow requires MP4, use OBS’s remux function to convert the completed recording without re-encoding it. OBS documents both the resilience benefit and remuxing in its Standard Recording Output Guide.
MKV is not the only workable choice. OBS’s Audio/Video Formats Guide also describes fragmented MP4/MOV as options for people who want to upload or edit directly. Choose based on the tradeoff: MKV prioritizes recovery from an interrupted capture, while a format accepted directly by your next tool can avoid a remux step.

Codec: balance quality and editing compatibility
OBS describes AV1 as its strongest general direction for quality and file size, followed by HEVC and H.264, but says AV1 is not yet well supported in editing software. This is guidance about general codec tradeoffs, not a promise for every encoder or editor. Check that your recording encoder and editing workflow support the codec before committing to a long capture. H.264 is a practical compatibility fallback; HEVC can be an option when both encoder and editor support it.
Recording encoder and preset
In Settings → Output → Recording, choose a recording encoder and quality setting separately if you want the local file to differ from the live stream. A separate encoder gives you independent recording settings but uses extra resources. “Same as stream” is simpler and reduces the number of distinct settings to manage; OBS notes that this mode does not allow pausing recordings.
- High Quality: a high-quality target with medium file size.
- Indistinguishable: higher quality, with larger files and possible performance impact on older or weaker systems.
- Lossless: not a routine choice for 4K60 recording. OBS reports about 7 GB per minute and notes it uses the CPU encoder.
Hardware encoding can move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized component in the GPU, according to OBS’s Hardware Encoding guide. Available codecs and performance depend on the operating system, GPU, drivers, encoder, OBS version, and workload. The available evidence cannot establish whether a particular computer will stream and separately record 4K60 without dropped frames, so test your own full workload.

HDR and latency are different cases
The settings above are for SDR. For HDR, YouTube recommends H.265 over RTMP(S), requires 10-bit guidance, and does not support AV1 for HDR. Use the HDR workflow only if the source, encoder, and OBS output are configured for it. YouTube also says 4K streams are optimized for quality and set to normal latency; low-latency optimization is unavailable for 4K.
Test the complete setup before an event
- Match the real workload. Test with motion, scene changes, and audio similar to the planned broadcast. A static test image may not reveal the same encoder or bitrate problems as the actual program.
- Check upload capacity and stability. YouTube advises checking upload speed and testing before going live, but does not establish one universal upload-speed multiplier. Confirm that the connection can sustain your chosen stream settings while the recording is also running.
- Run stream and recording together. Record locally using the actual intended encoder and quality setting. Watch OBS for rendering or encoding lag and inspect the resulting file for playback, audio sync, and editing compatibility.
- Check YouTube stream health. Monitor the live control room’s stream health during the test and adjust settings if YouTube reports a problem.
YouTube’s advice is simple: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” A test is especially important when using a separate recording encoder, because it adds workload beyond the live output.

Troubleshoot common 4K60 problems
YouTube reports poor stream health or the broadcast buffers
Likely cause: the connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate consistently, or the encoder cannot maintain the output. Fix: confirm the bitrate and encoder settings, check upload stability, and test again. If the recommended bitrate is not sustainable, reduce the output demands and re-test rather than assuming a brief speed result proves the connection is stable.

OBS shows encoding or rendering lag
Likely cause: the system is overloaded, particularly when a separate recording encoder is active. Fix: test streaming without the separate recording workload, or choose a less demanding recording configuration. Confirm the codec and hardware encoder are supported by your particular system; no single hardware configuration can be recommended from the available compatibility information.
The recording is too large
Likely cause: a high-quality preset, lossless encoding, or a less efficient codec creates more data. Fix: use a more practical quality preset, such as High Quality or Indistinguishable as appropriate, and avoid Lossless unless its exceptionally large files are intentional. Check that your storage and editor can handle the resulting files.
The editor will not open the recording
Likely cause: the editor does not support the container or codec. Fix: remux MKV to MP4 in OBS if the issue is the container, or choose a codec your editor accepts for future recordings. Remuxing changes the container; it does not make an unsupported video codec compatible.
