Before updating OBS, back up both your Profile and Scene Collection. After the update, verify the production configuration, enable automatic reconnect, and run a controlled test before leaving your sleep sounds stream unattended. If a stream stops after an update, the timing alone does not prove OBS caused it: OBS says intermittent disconnections and dropped frames point to a connection problem between your computer and the ingest server, which may be outside OBS’s control.
Before updating: back up the complete setup
OBS keeps streaming configuration and scenes in separate places, so a Profile backup alone is not a complete recovery plan. OBS’s Profiles guide explains that profiles contain Stream, Video, and Output settings, but do not store Scenes. You can export a Profile as JSON.
- In OBS, select the Profile you use for the 24/7 stream, then open Profile → Export and save the JSON file somewhere outside the OBS installation folder. The export includes the profile’s settings, including stream and output settings. Treat any saved stream credentials as sensitive.
- Separately export or back up the Scene Collection used by the stream. Do not assume the Profile export contains scenes, sources, or their layout.
- Keep both backups available before making the update, in case you need to restore the known working configuration.
See OBS’s Profiles guide for profile export details. An OBS Project beta announcement published June 23, 2026, likewise advises testers to back up both profiles and scene collections; that is beta-testing guidance, not evidence that normal stable updates routinely stop streams. For unattended production, OBS recommends stable builds rather than beta builds.
After updating: verify the stream before leaving it unattended
Updates can change or expose configuration problems, but a post-update interruption does not by itself identify the cause. Before starting the unattended stream, check the configuration OBS will actually use and make a brief controlled test.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Profile: load the intended Profile and check the Stream, Video, and Output settings.
- Scene Collection: load the intended scenes and confirm the sleep sounds media source is present and behaves as expected.
- Destination: verify the service and server selection and that the stream connects to the intended channel. If you use a stream key, check that the correct key is configured; do not publish or share it.
- Output and sources: confirm the output configuration and that audio and video sources are active. Watch the controlled test long enough to confirm the stream reaches the platform and the intended sleep sounds play.
- Reconnect: open Settings → Advanced and confirm Automatically Reconnect is enabled. Check the retry interval and retry count against the length of a brief expected interruption.
OBS documents automatic reconnect in its Overview Guide. Reconnect is a recovery measure, not a guarantee: OBS can run out of configured attempts, the ingest server can remain unavailable, the OBS process can crash, or the platform can end the broadcast.
Set a recovery window that fits likely interruptions
Automatic reconnect only helps while OBS remains running and the configured attempts can bridge the interruption. A practical forum reply dated August 15, 2025 advises checking Settings → Advanced → Automatically Reconnect and increasing retries if the connection takes longer to return. The reply is community guidance, not a promise that a particular retry value prevents every interruption.

Choose retry interval and count to cover the brief outages you reasonably expect, while recognizing that a long network or server failure may outlast them. After any interruption, check OBS’s status and the destination broadcast rather than assuming that reconnect succeeded. See the OBS forum discussion of dropped YouTube streams.
If the stream still stops, diagnose the connection path
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide, dated September 30, 2024, says dropped frames and intermittent disconnections indicate a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server. The cause may be outside OBS. Work through the connection path instead of assuming the update is responsible.

- Check network stability and bitrate. Look for unstable connectivity or an output bitrate that the available connection cannot sustain. The guide recommends checking bitrate and connection stability.
- Try another ingest server. A problem with the selected server or route may be specific to that connection.
- Check firewall and security software. Confirm that security tools are not interrupting OBS’s connection.
- Test without VPN interference. If a VPN is in use, check whether it is affecting the route to the ingest server.
- Check the computer and hardware. Investigate whether the system or relevant hardware is contributing to the interruption.
- Contact your ISP when appropriate. If local and OBS-side checks do not resolve the connection problem, ask the internet provider about stability or routing issues.
Follow the steps in OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide. Record when the interruption occurs and what OBS reports; that helps distinguish a connection failure from a scene, source, process, or platform issue.
Check YouTube’s broadcast behavior separately
OBS reconnect and YouTube’s broadcast settings handle different parts of recovery. OBS attempts to restore the encoder’s connection; YouTube determines whether the destination broadcast remains available to reconnect to. An OBS forum resource on YouTube streaming explains that disabling Auto-stop for a scheduled broadcast can allow reconnection after a streaming interruption, but also notes the broadcast may eventually end after multiple hours without an incoming stream. This guidance is specific to YouTube scheduled broadcasts; do not apply it as a rule for other services.

Review the broadcast’s Auto-stop behavior when you set up the scheduled YouTube stream, and test the recovery path in advance. Disabling Auto-stop does not keep OBS, your computer, or your network healthy, and it does not guarantee that a broadcast will remain open indefinitely. See the OBS forum’s YouTube streaming resource.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Optional startup automation: use it cautiously
OBS documents launch parameters that can start streaming and select a Profile or Scene Collection. Its reference also lists --disable-updater for Windows and macOS. These options can support a planned startup or update workflow, but automation is not a substitute for verifying the stream: starting OBS automatically cannot ensure the program, connection, or platform stays healthy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does an OBS update automatically disable reconnect?
The sources do not establish that updates routinely disable reconnect. Check the setting after the update rather than assuming it changed.
Will OBS reconnect if the whole computer restarts?
Automatic reconnect addresses a dropped stream connection while OBS is running; it does not itself restart a crashed or powered-off computer.
