FFmpeg’s documented reconnect flags are HTTP input options; they are not a general switch for reconnecting an RTMP or RTMPS publishing connection. The right fix depends on the protocol, the full error, and whether FFmpeg is still running.
Capture the failure before changing flags
A reconnect option can address the wrong problem if you do not know which connection failed. Save the details below before restarting or editing the command:
- Your complete FFmpeg command, with the YouTube stream key and any other credentials replaced with placeholders.
- The output of
ffmpeg -version, including the build configuration. - The full error and surrounding log lines, including timestamps where available.
- The source type and protocol, such as an HTTP video URL, file, or capture device.
- Whether input reading stopped first, YouTube publishing stopped first, or the FFmpeg process exited.
- Any Live Control Room stream-health message at the time of failure.
A stream key is a credential: do not post it in a public log, screenshot, or support request. Without the command, FFmpeg version, complete error, and failed connection direction, a precise command-level correction cannot be selected.
Identify which connection failed
| What failed | Typical evidence to look for | What to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Input read | Errors refer to opening, reading, or reconnecting to the source URL; the publishing side may not yet have received data. | Source availability and the input protocol. For HTTP, check whether HTTP reconnect options are correctly scoped to that input. |
| YouTube publish | The source continues to read, but the output connection to YouTube fails or YouTube reports an ingest problem. | Stream URL, stream key, RTMP/RTMPS scheme, network route, and whether the FFmpeg process remains alive. |
| Process or source | FFmpeg exits, a capture device stops, or a finite file reaches its end. | Process status and source behavior. This may not be a network reconnect problem. |
These are separate protocol legs. FFmpeg documents HTTP and RTMP separately; an HTTP input flag should not be treated as a universal RTMP output recovery setting. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.

If the failed leg is an HTTP input
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol documentation describes several reconnect controls. They apply to HTTP protocol operations, and need to be placed before and scoped to the relevant input in the command. Do not copy a flag into an output section and expect it to reconnect YouTube publishing.
reconnectretries when a network connection is disconnected before the input reaches EOF.reconnect_at_eoftreats EOF as an error and attempts reconnection. It may suit an input expected to continue, but it does not make an ended or exhausted source live again; an HTTP server may simply keep returning EOF.reconnect_streamedenables reconnect behavior for streamed, non-seekable inputs.- HTTP options for retrying on network errors or selected HTTP errors, plus retry-count and retry-delay limits, are documented in FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol section. Choose limits according to the source and the installed FFmpeg version rather than assuming retries will continue forever.
Confirm the source itself is still available and that the error is from the HTTP input. If the input is a local file, camera, or another protocol, HTTP reconnect flags are not the relevant remedy.

If YouTube publishing over RTMP or RTMPS failed
Do not assume the HTTP reconnect options repair an RTMP output disconnect. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation describes RTMP as a separate streaming protocol over TCP/IP and shows it as an output path; the cited HTTP options do not establish a general RTMP publishing reconnect flag. Whether a particular flag or behavior works depends on your command, FFmpeg build, and output path.
Check the ingest destination and key
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and use the stream URL and stream key shown in the current stream settings. YouTube explains that these tell the encoder where to send the feed: Manage live stream settings.
- If you intend to use RTMPS, use the RTMPS URL provided for the stream. Do not assume an RTMP URL is encrypted. Check that the URL scheme and server match the chosen ingest destination.
- For an SSL error, follow YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance: verify the scheme and server, and check port 443 when appropriate for the provided URL. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Confirm your installed FFmpeg build supports the protocol you are using. The command and build configuration determine what is available.
Plan for a process that stays alive—or does not
Watch whether FFmpeg remains running after the output disconnects. If it exits, a reconnect option cannot help unless some separate process strategy starts it again. For a genuinely continuous tour, decide how you will detect a dead process and restore service, then test that recovery before the real broadcast. The appropriate supervisor or restart command depends on your operating environment; there is no single command established for every FFmpeg setup.

Check upload capacity and YouTube stream health
YouTube Help advises leaving upload headroom because network disruption can break a stream. Its guidance recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom; for simultaneous primary and backup encoders, it says to account for the primary plus backup bitrate, then add 20%. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of uninterrupted service. Read YouTube’s streaming tips and check Live Control Room health messages alongside the actual outbound connection during the failure.
- Check sustained upload capacity during the times the property tour will run, not only a brief peak reading.
- Compare available upload capacity with the total bitrate being sent, including a backup encoder if one is active.
- Look for packet loss, changing network conditions, or an ISP/router interruption at the failure time.
- Use YouTube’s reported stream-health warnings to distinguish ingest or bandwidth trouble from an input-source failure.
Separate encoder compatibility settings from recovery
Correct encoder settings help YouTube receive a compatible stream; they do not reconnect a broken publishing connection. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, supported video codecs including H.264, CBR bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Consult Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current guidance and settings appropriate to your resolution and frame rate.

Before a property tour, test with representative movement and audio, monitor the stream in Live Control Room, and test failover. YouTube’s setup guidance also notes that automatic archiving applies to streams under 12 hours; do not assume that a longer continuous broadcast will be archived automatically. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Consider HLS only if its trade-offs fit
YouTube supports HLS ingestion subject to its encoder and playlist requirements. It sends video segments rather than the continuous RTMP stream, so YouTube says HLS has higher latency. It is a protocol choice to assess when its supported features or requirements suit your setup—not a drop-in reconnect fix for a property tour. Check Set up an HLS stream before changing ingest protocols.

Troubleshoot by symptom
| Symptom | Likely area | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| HTTP source disconnects before EOF | HTTP input connection or source availability | Verify the source and input-scoped HTTP reconnect options; review retry limits and the complete input error. |
| HTTP input reaches EOF unexpectedly | Source ended, server returned EOF, or the stream is not truly continuous | Check the source. reconnect_at_eof can retry, but cannot make an exhausted source produce new video. |
| Input continues but YouTube output drops | RTMP/RTMPS destination, key, transport, or outbound network | Verify the current Live Control Room URL and key, protocol scheme, network path, and YouTube health messages. Do not rely on HTTP flags for the output. |
| RTMPS reports an SSL or connection error | URL scheme/server mismatch or TLS connectivity | Confirm the supplied RTMPS URL and consult YouTube’s guidance on port 443 where appropriate. |
| FFmpeg process exits | Process, source, or fatal output error | Inspect the final log lines and process status; plan and test a separate restart/supervision strategy if continuous operation requires it. |
| Stream health reports network trouble | Insufficient or unstable outbound capacity | Measure sustained upload, leave YouTube’s recommended headroom, and investigate disruption at the time reported. |
