How to Keep OBS From Restarting a Church’s YouTube Stream After a Windows Update

Prevent update restarts during a church service with Windows active hours, and learn how to test OBS launch recovery and verify the YouTube broadcast after a reboot.

Set Windows active hours to cover the service and volunteer setup, and schedule any pending restart for afterward. That helps prevent an update restart during the broadcast; it does not recover OBS if Windows has already rebooted. For recovery, test an OBS launch shortcut using --startstreaming, then verify the intended broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. OBS restarting after a full reboot and OBS reconnecting after a dropped connection are separate problems.

Prevent Windows from restarting during the service

Before service day, use Windows Update’s active-hours and restart-scheduling controls. Set active hours to include the service and the time volunteers need to set up. If Windows has already queued a restart, schedule it for after the event. Microsoft describes pausing updates as temporary; it is not a permanent way to disable updates. Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ explains these controls.

This prevention step is distinct from recovery: active hours reduce the chance of a service-time restart, but they do not make OBS start again after Windows has rebooted.

Set up OBS to launch streaming after a reboot

OBS supports the --startstreaming launch parameter. It can be added to a Windows shortcut, but treat it as a recovery aid to test with your church’s setup—not a guarantee that YouTube will resume the intended broadcast unattended.

APC BE600M1 UPS Battery Backup & Surge Protector for Computer, Router, NAS
  • KEEP YOUR COMPUTER, WI-FI AND ROUTER RUNNING THROUGH POWER OUTAGES: Supplies short-term battery power during outages to maintain internet connectivity and allow safe shutdown of computer during power interruptions
  • POWER PROBLEMS DON'T ONLY HAPPEN DURING STORMS: 23 minutes of runtime (at 100W load) guards against outages, while surge protection shields connected devices from unexpected power events that happen even on a normal day
  • PROTECT EVERYTHING ON YOUR DESK: 5 well-spaced outlets with full battery backup and surge protection, plus 2 surge-only outlets for less critical gear
  • PHONE CHARGER: Keep your phone charged even when the power's out. The built-in 1.5A USB port works during outages
  • EASY BATTERY REPLACEMENT KEEPS COSTS LOW: Swap the internal battery in minutes when it ages out, no need to replace the whole unit (APC replacement battery APCRBC154, sold separately)
  1. Create or use an OBS shortcut. Follow the OBS Project’s Launch Parameters instructions for adding launch parameters to a Windows shortcut’s Target field, appending --startstreaming to the OBS program path.
  2. If using a scheduled launch, set the working directory. OBS’s launch-parameter instructions say automated or scheduled launches also need the OBS program folder set as the working directory (shown in Windows as “Start in” in the relevant shortcut or task settings).
  3. Confirm the right production loads. If your church uses multiple OBS profiles, scene collections, or scenes, verify the correct ones are selected. OBS documents launch parameters for selecting these as well; use the official instructions rather than assuming a shortcut will select the right production.
  4. Test the full recovery path while supervised. Test the launch method and the YouTube broadcast before relying on it during a service. Do not assume OBS’s automatic reconnect feature will launch OBS after a full Windows restart: reconnect settings address a dropped connection while OBS is running, whereas --startstreaming is a launch option. OBS documents reconnect in its Studio Overview Guide.

A shortcut launch parameter does not by itself establish or verify YouTube’s broadcast state. The sources do not promise that every scheduled event will resume automatically after a Windows reboot. Results can depend on the broadcast selected, OBS configuration and version, launch method, network readiness, and channel settings.

Prepare the YouTube broadcast before service

  • Know which event is selected. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm the scheduled broadcast you intend to use. YouTube’s live stream settings guidance covers scheduling and options such as auto-start and auto-stop.
  • Protect the stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as credentials that direct an encoder’s feed to the channel. Keep the key private and make sure OBS is configured for the intended channel and broadcast. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  • Run a test and inspect the preview. Set up and test the encoder ahead of the event, check the preview before going live, and monitor audio, video, and stream health. YouTube’s streaming tips explain preparation and monitoring.
  • Plan for content rights. Use video and audio your church has the rights to stream on YouTube. A technically successful connection does not establish that the content is authorized; check the relevant rights before scheduling or broadcasting.

Recover after an unexpected Windows restart

  1. Sign in and let the network return. An initial connection failure just after login does not, by itself, prove the stream key is wrong. The cited guidance does not specify a guaranteed network wait time.
  2. Start OBS using the method you tested. Confirm the expected profile, scene collection, scene, and YouTube broadcast selection, especially if the church has more than one production setup.
  3. Check Live Control Room. Inspect the intended event’s preview, status, and any error message. YouTube’s stream-health view provides error messages and instructions; follow the ones shown for the actual broadcast.
  4. Verify the viewer experience. Confirm that the broadcast is accessible and picture and sound are correct. Do not treat OBS showing a connected state as the only confirmation that the intended event is live.
  5. Diagnose the failure you actually see. If OBS remains open but disconnects or drops frames, investigate connection, bitrate, server, firewall or security software, and network settings using the OBS stream connection troubleshooting guide. A connection problem is different from Windows closing OBS during a reboot.

What to expect from the two approaches

Approach What it does What it does not establish
Windows active hours and restart scheduling Helps avoid an update restart during the service window. Does not relaunch OBS after a reboot.
Tested OBS launch with --startstreaming, followed by YouTube checks Can start OBS streaming as a launch action, subject to the church’s tested configuration. Does not guarantee that YouTube will resume the same scheduled event unattended.

Choose based on whether someone can verify the output, whether the correct scheduled broadcast must remain selected, and how much interruption the service can tolerate. The official guidance does not provide reliability percentages for either approach. YouTube recommends testing encoder streams ahead of the event and monitoring stream health; see its streaming tips and OBS’s Quick Start Guide.
