For one file, use OBS’s Media Source with Loop enabled; for several files, use VLC Video with Loop Playlist enabled. The loop setting controls playback, while your computer’s power settings control whether OBS can keep running.
Choose the right OBS source for your playlist
OBS’s Media Sources guide, dated January 11, 2022, describes two relevant options. The names and controls may change in later OBS versions, so check the current source properties if your interface differs. OBS Media Sources guide

Set up a single looping video
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene that will show the video.
- Choose the local video file in the source properties.
- Enable Loop, then confirm the source is visible in the scene.
Set up a playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. Match its architecture to OBS: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video source to the OBS scene.
- Load the files as a playlist and enable Loop Playlist.
- Leave shuffle disabled if you need the files to play in a fixed sequence.
VLC Video’s visibility behavior can affect playback when the source is hidden or placed on another scene: depending on its setting, playback can continue, pause, or stop. Check that option if the playlist behaves differently after a scene change.

OBS cannot keep streaming if the host computer sleeps or hibernates. On Windows, adjust the system’s power settings so automatic sleep is disabled for the expected broadcast period. For an extended session, keep a laptop connected to power and check what closing its lid or pressing its power button does; those actions may trigger sleep depending on the configured behavior.

Microsoft documents SetThreadExecutionState, an API applications can use to request that Windows stay awake. Microsoft also states that this API cannot prevent a user from putting the computer to sleep. It is not a substitute for configuring the machine’s power behavior. An OBS project issue discussion cautions that putting a computer to sleep during active output is destructive and unsupported in the context discussed there. Treat that as a warning, not as a platform-wide guarantee; check the actual operating system settings and avoid manually sleeping or hibernating the computer while OBS is streaming. The cited documentation establishes Windows guidance, not exact macOS or Linux steps. On those systems, use the installed operating system’s current power controls to prevent automatic sleep during the stream rather than applying Windows instructions.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or manage the stream. Set its title, privacy, and other stream details there.
- In YouTube’s encoder settings, find the stream’s server URL and stream key.
- Enter those connection details in OBS’s streaming configuration, then start the stream and confirm the connection in YouTube Studio.
YouTube provides separate settings for stream privacy, type, and optional auto-start or auto-stop behavior. These are not the same as OBS’s playlist loop setting. Troubleshoot the stream by symptom

The workflow is based on OBS source and operating-system settings; the cited documentation does not establish a need for a dedicated keep-awake device, replacement computer, UPS, or network cable.
