For continuous background music while an OBS video playlist changes clips, add a separate Media Source for the audio file, enable Loop, and leave it active in the scene. If you want the clips’ own soundtracks to flow seamlessly from one video to the next, OBS’s documentation does not promise gapless transitions from a VLC playlist; test the boundaries or prepare a single continuous audio track.
Choose the audio behavior you want
- One continuous background bed: Use a separate looping Media Source. It can keep playing independently while the VLC playlist changes video items.
- Each clip’s own audio, with no audible transition: The OBS documentation describes playlist playback but does not establish that VLC transitions are gapless. A playlist setting should not be treated as a guarantee of seamless sound.
- Audio that ends with the playlist: A continuously looping background source may keep playing after the last video. Stop or hide it when appropriate, and test the end behavior in your scene.
Set up a continuous background audio source
- Add the audio file. In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the audio file. OBS lists MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV among supported audio formats. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Enable Loop. Open the Media Source properties and turn on Loop. OBS describes this as repeating the file after playback completes.
- Keep the playlist source in the scene. Use a VLC Video source for the video playlist. The OBS guide describes it as supporting playlists, with options including loop, shuffle, visibility behavior, caching, and audio-track settings.
- Check the VLC installation. VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear. Match its architecture to OBS: for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Balance or mute the playlist audio. Adjust the separate audio source in the OBS mixer. If you want only the background bed, mute the VLC playlist source so the clips’ embedded sound does not play over it.
- Record and listen before going live. Include multiple playlist items in a short test recording. Listen at each clip boundary for gaps, overlaps, or silence at the start or end of the audio file.
This setup uses the documented controls for separate Media Source and VLC Video sources. It is a practical configuration for a continuous music bed, not a documented guarantee of gapless playback.

If clip-native audio needs to sound seamless
OBS’s Media Sources guide explains how VLC Video plays a playlist, but does not say that transitions are sample-continuous or gapless. If the soundtrack must carry smoothly across clip boundaries, consider joining or preparing the audio as one continuous track in a suitable editor, then test the finished asset in OBS. This is a practical alternative, not an OBS-specific guarantee.

Optional playlist-management plugin
The community Media Playlist Source 0.1.3 resource offers another way to edit a playlist and select items, using Media Source internally. Its listing specifies OBS 30.0.0 as the minimum version and Windows, macOS, and Linux as supported platforms. It does not support audio-track or subtitle selection, and it does not claim to remove audio gaps. Treat it as a playlist-management alternative, not a fix for cutouts.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The music stops when a video changes: Check that the audio is its own Media Source, that Loop is enabled, and that the source remains active in the scene.
- You hear two soundtracks: The video playlist is also sending embedded audio. Mute the VLC source in the OBS mixer if you want only the separate audio bed.
- The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC, then confirm its architecture matches OBS (for example, 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS).
- There is a brief gap or overlap at a clip boundary: The reviewed OBS documentation does not guarantee gapless VLC playlist transitions. Test the clips and, if seamless clip-native audio is essential, try a pre-edited continuous audio track.
- You hear silence even though the source is looping: Listen to the audio file itself around its beginning and end. A loop repeats the file; it cannot remove silence already present in that file.
