Choose a style that contains the length
No single hairstyle is proven best for every rugby player. A useful starting point is to keep hair gathered close to the head and limit loose lengths that could swing into your face or snag. Your hair’s length and texture, comfort, and any headgear all affect what works in practice.

Single braid or braided ponytail
Gather hair securely at the back, braid the length, and fasten the end with a metal-free elastic. Braid the ponytail itself rather than leaving it loose to contain more of its length. Rugby-focused advice on playing with long hair recommends tying hair back and minimizing loose lengths, but does not compare styles in a controlled test.
Two braids gathered at the nape
Two braids are another option to try, particularly if one heavy braid feels uncomfortable. Dividing the hair may feel different, but available player accounts do not establish that two braids prevent breakage or reduce traction. Use comfort during training as your guide.

Compact bun
A compact bun can contain dangling ends. Secure it with permitted soft ties rather than rigid pins, and check that it sits comfortably with any headgear. A bun is not suitable for every player or every equipment setup.
Low ponytail
A low ponytail is simple to make, but its tail remains loose unless you braid or otherwise contain it. If you choose one, consider braiding the length and fastening the end so less hair swings freely.

Secure it without adding rigid hardware
Use soft ties and avoid rigid accessories such as hard clips or pins. World Rugby’s equipment guidance warns: “Rigid materials that do not comply with a specific performance specification may increase the risk to the wearer or other players (both teammates and/or opponents).” Its Regulation 12 sets out permitted equipment categories and says specifications should be read with the current Law 4; it is not a blanket approval of every hair tie or a hairstyle guide.

Do not assume a product is match-legal just because it feels soft or is sold as a hair tie. Check the current World Rugby Laws of the Game hub and your union or competition’s specific guidance; the match official can clarify what applies to your fixture.

Check the rules for your competition
Rules can depend on the governing body and season. For example, USA Rugby’s 2024–2025 Protective Equipment and Clothing Guidelines say: “Only fabric ‘hairbands’ are allowed for control of hair during a rugby match.” The same guidance says: “‘Hair ties’ like rubber bands are permitted, as long as there is no metal on them.” That is season-specific USA Rugby guidance, not a universal ruling or confirmation of the rules for a later season.
- Look up the latest clothing and equipment guidance from your national union and competition.
- Check whether the accessory you plan to use is allowed, especially if it contains metal or rigid parts.
- Ask your coach or match official if the wording is unclear before taking the field.
Balance a secure hold with comfort
A style should stay contained without causing persistent pain or pulling. In a Sky Sports interview published in October 2023, Loughborough Lightning player Sadia Kabeya described wearing braids to protect her hair and also discussed traction associated with the styles, particularly during rugby. That is her personal experience, not a clinical finding or a quantified risk. If one style pulls uncomfortably, loosen it, try a different arrangement, or vary styles rather than forcing a painful hold.

Test the style before match day
- Secure your hair with the soft, rule-compliant ties you intend to use in the match.
- Wear any headgear you normally use and check that the style does not press uncomfortably or interfere with its fit.
- Train in the style and see whether it stays contained through movement. Adjust the braid, bun, or tie placement if it slips or pulls.
- Recheck the accessory against current local rules before the fixture.
