A simple routine to limit feathering
1. Make sure lips feel comfortable
If your lips feel dry, apply a non-irritating balm before makeup and give it time to settle. Blot or wipe away excess before applying color: a heavily slick surface can make lipstick harder to control. Balm helps with comfort and dryness; it does not act as a border around the lips. 2. Define the lip edge with liner
Trace your natural lip line using short, light strokes. Choose a liner close to your lipstick shade, or use a clear liner if you do not have a match. For an added base, fill in the lips with liner before lipstick. Liner is the most directly relevant step for containing color because it defines the border, but it cannot guarantee that lipstick will never move. 3. Decide whether to use primer
A thin layer of lip primer may provide a smoother base, but it is optional. You can also skip it; a careful liner-and-lipstick routine does not require primer. Avoid piling primer on top of balm that has not settled or layering several creamy products, which can leave the surface too slippery. 4. Apply lipstick in thin layers and blot
Apply an even, thin coat. Press a tissue gently against the lips to blot, then add another thin coat if you want more opacity and blot again. Choosing liner and deciding whether to use primer

Burning or stinging is a reason to stop using the product, not a sign that it is working. The AAD advises discontinuing lip products that cause this reaction and choosing non-irritating products.
