How to Keep Language Documentation Evidence Clear and Contextual

A Language Recovery OS should organize documentation without pretending to settle disputed evidence. Here is a source-first, community-led design for agents that expose uncertainty instead of guessing.

A “Language Recovery OS” is best understood as a proposed workflow, not an established product: a set of tools and practices that helps language workers organize evidence without turning conflicting accounts into a false certainty. Its central rule should be simple: preserve who said what, when, and in what context—and let people see when sources disagree.

What a Language Recovery OS would—and would not—do

No deployed system under the name “Language Recovery OS,” verified technical architecture, or user evaluation is established by the available sources. The concept can still be useful as a design brief for an agent-assisted documentation workflow. Such a workflow could help collect, organize, compare, and retrieve material; it should not claim to revitalize a language by itself or replace community decision-making.

The Catalogue of Endangered Languages offers a relevant precedent for how to handle conflicting accounts: it presents information from multiple sources and does not decide which description is universally right. A proposed system can adopt that editorial principle while making clear that its own summaries are synthesis, not another source’s testimony.

Why the system must resist a single status label

Language vitality is multidimensional. UNESCO’s 2003 guidance identifies six vitality factors, two factors concerning language attitudes, and one factor concerning urgency of documentation. The framework is not a recipe for an automatic score: UNESCO cautions that no single factor alone can establish vitality or documentation need.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Intergenerational transmission: whether children are learning and using the language.
  • Speaker numbers and proportions: both the absolute number of speakers and their share of the relevant population matter.
  • Domains of use: where the language is used, and how those domains are changing.
  • New domains and media: whether the language is adapting to contemporary settings and forms of communication.
  • Education and literacy materials: the availability of materials that support learning and literacy.
  • Attitudes and documentation urgency: institutional and community attitudes, alongside the need to document the language.

UNESCO’s broad 2022 framing says more than 7,000 languages are in use around the world and many are in danger of falling out of use. That is a global framing, not a precise census or a status estimate for any particular language. The United Nations International Decade of Indigenous Languages runs from 2022 to 2032, with UNESCO as lead agency cooperating with UNDESA and other UN entities.

How agents should handle sources that disagree

Keep claims attached to their provenance

Store each statement as a claim with its source identity, publication or update date, geographic and community scope, method or context when available, and the source’s exact assertion. Keep those details attached if the claim is exported or quoted; a number separated from its definition and date can appear more comparable than it is.

Compare like with like

Before treating two accounts as contradictory, check whether they describe the same period, place, population, and definition. A speaker estimate from one community or year may not conflict with a differently scoped estimate from another. Compare the vitality dimensions each source actually addresses rather than collapsing them into one ranking.

Show the divergence rather than averaging it away

Present material differences side by side, name the sources, and state what prevents a confident choice between them. Do not silently average incompatible estimates or select the newest figure as automatically correct. If the system produces a synthesis, label it as a synthesis and retain the underlying accounts so readers can inspect them.

Keep source claims separate from system conclusions

An agent may identify recurring themes or gaps in coverage, but it should distinguish that analysis from what a source directly reports. A useful output can say which accounts agree, where they diverge, and which information is missing without converting uncertainty into an authoritative-sounding answer.

A practical workflow for a community-led system

  1. Set the purpose and authority first. Community members and language workers define what the system is for, who can use it, and what information should not be collected or shared.
  2. Gather material with context. Record provenance and relevant context at the time a document, interview, or other source enters the workflow. Do not infer consent to a new use from the fact that material can be found publicly.
  3. Extract candidate claims for review. An agent can help identify statements, dates, locations, and topics in materials. Treat extracted claims as candidates that people can verify, not as confirmed facts.
  4. Compare claims by scope and dimension. Check dates, definitions, geography, community scope, evidence methods, and the vitality factors addressed before flagging a disagreement.
  5. Route sensitive or consequential material to people. Community-authorized reviewers should decide whether a claim is appropriate to share and how it should be described. The system should make uncertainty and review status visible rather than imply approval that has not occurred.
  6. Publish only the permitted view. A public summary should include source identity and relevant context, preserve material disagreement, and omit or restrict information that is not appropriate for public dissemination.

These steps are design recommendations, not a description of a tested agent system. The sources establish principles for responsible documentation and comparison, but do not show that agents improve accuracy or language-revitalization outcomes.

Community authority is part of the system design

The Endangered Languages Project’s Getting Started Guide for Communities frames language work as relational and points toward community planning and technology resources. That matters operationally: decisions about collection, access, reuse, and public disclosure should be shaped by the people and communities whose language and knowledge are involved.

The Catalogue of Endangered Languages likewise emphasizes responsible practice and sharing only information appropriate for public dissemination. An agent should therefore not treat “publicly accessible” as equivalent to “appropriate for every use.” Access and disclosure rules need to be set with the relevant community, and the tool’s outputs should respect those boundaries.

Resources for planning documentation work

Community planning and learning

The Endangered Languages Project’s Getting Started Guide for Communities is a starting point for community-focused planning, documentation, and technology-resource signposting. Its Learning & Help Center provides a resource library and free mentor support.

Recording and documentation

Safeguarding Your Language Through Documentation: A Toolkit for Beginners was created with the Canadian Commission for UNESCO and Supporting Indigenous Language Revitalization at the University of Alberta. It is aimed at people without formal training and covers equipment options, ethical considerations, recording sessions, content, and elicitation strategies. The Endangered Languages Project resource listing for the toolkit was created January 20, 2025, and last updated September 11, 2026.

For equipment planning, the toolkit supports considering the category of portable audio recorder for language documentation, but it does not establish a preferred model or comparative test results. Choose equipment around the recording context, accessibility for the intended language workers, storage and preservation workflow, and community protocols—not an assumed universal best option.

What remains unproven

The cited material supports source transparency, multidimensional assessment, community participation, and cautious disclosure. It does not validate a particular AI implementation, establish that an agent can resolve conflicting sources, or demonstrate better documentation or revitalization outcomes. A credible Language Recovery OS should make those limits visible while helping people work with evidence carefully.
