How to Keep Kids Entertained on a Long Fall Foliage Drive

A practical mix of scenery games, quiet activities, downloaded audio and safe breaks can make a fall foliage drive more enjoyable for children and adults.

Keep a few different options ready—foliage-spotting games, quiet activities, downloaded audio and safe scenic stops—but don’t try to entertain children every minute. Looking out the window and even getting a little bored can leave room for imagination, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) parenting site HealthyChildren.org.

How do you keep kids entertained on a long drive?

Rotate between activities instead of planning a nonstop program. A stretch of spotting colors can give way to a shared guessing game, then a book, drawing or audiobook while everyone rests. Let children join in when they want to, and leave quiet time unfilled. The driver’s job is to drive—not to lead games or hand out supplies.

Turn the fall scenery into a screen-free activity

Use the landscape as a reason to look up from devices. The AAP’s HealthyChildren.org suggests visual noticing, I Spy, license-plate spotting and scavenger hunts; foliage prompts are an easy seasonal adaptation, not a specific AAP-prescribed fall activity.

  • Choose a color to find: bright red, golden yellow or a tree that still has green leaves.
  • Look for shapes and landmarks such as a covered bridge, barn, church steeple or winding river.
  • Use a paper map to spot place-names or follow the route together while a passenger handles the map.
  • Make a simple scavenger hunt: find a bridge, a farm, a roadside orchard sign or a tree with leaves of three different colors.

Keep prompts flexible and passenger-led. A child can point out what they see without anyone needing to write down a score or watch a screen.

Choose a few simple games for the whole car

HealthyChildren.org lists familiar options including I Spy, license-plate spotting, alphabet games, counting cars, 20 Questions, cloud pictures, family trivia, tongue twisters and scavenger hunts. AAA also recommends shared games, singing and paper-and-pencil activities. Pick a few that suit your passengers, rather than trying to fill every mile.

  • Alphabet game: Find letters in signs or license plates, moving through the alphabet together.
  • 20 Questions: One passenger thinks of an object, place or animal; the others ask yes-or-no questions.
  • Family trivia: Ask questions about favorite meals, pets or family memories. Anyone can pass.
  • Drawing challenge: Give everyone a notebook and crayons and suggest a subject such as a tree, a roadside barn or an imaginary leaf creature.

Games should be easy to pause. If the driver needs quiet or attention, stop the activity immediately.

What can kids do in the car without a screen?

Pack a small activity pouch with a notebook, crayons, coloring or activity pages, a small soft toy, or a car-friendly puzzle. These are practical alternatives to a device and can support quieter individual time. Choose items a child can manage from their seat, and keep loose belongings secured so they cannot fly around in a sudden stop.

Books, drawing, familiar music and looking out the window are other low-tech options. Offer a choice or two rather than presenting a large pile of things at once; children may prefer to rest or simply watch the scenery.

When screens and audio help

Audiobooks, familiar music or a downloaded movie can provide a quieter stretch when children are ready to listen or watch. AAA says passengers may read, listen to music, watch a movie or nap, and recommends preparing downloads before leaving. Britax likewise advises downloading movies, audiobooks and games in advance so they remain available without Wi-Fi.

Choose and download anything you plan to use before the trip, when you have a reliable connection. Audio can be shared by the whole car or listened to individually; a movie or game is an optional screen-based activity, not a requirement for the drive. No one format works for every child or every stretch of road.

Plan breaks and scenic pauses

HealthyChildren.org recommends stopping for a break about every two hours. Britax suggests mapping out family-friendly stops such as parks and scenic lookouts, while staying flexible about the family’s energy and mood. For a foliage drive, plan legal, safe viewpoints so children can enjoy the view outside the moving car rather than craning around to see it.

Check local conditions and the route before setting out: foliage timing, traffic and road conditions vary by location and date. Leave enough time for breaks and any planned detours; don’t stop or park where it is unsafe or prohibited.

Keep the driver focused and everyone properly restrained

AAA’s Michelle Donati advises: “Drivers should avoid games and activities that take their eyes off the road, hands off the wheel, or mind off the task of driving.” Games should be run by passengers, and passengers should avoid activities that require moving around the car or removing seat belts. Keep water, snacks and child-safe wipes accessible to a passenger, not the driver.

NHTSA advises checking weather, road conditions and traffic, reviewing the route and allowing enough time. It also says children under 13 should ride correctly buckled in the back seat. Use an age- and size-appropriate restraint according to its manual and applicable local law; the cited NHTSA guidance is U.S.-focused. Never leave a child alone in the car.
