If alerts from an important app arrive late on your Samsung Galaxy, first check whether the phone has put that app to sleep. Go to Settings > Battery > Background usage limits, remove it from Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps, and—if your phone offers the option—add it to Never auto sleeping apps or Never sleeping apps. Then check notification permissions, Do not disturb, Power saving, and Data Saver. Menu names and paths vary by model and software version; if you cannot find the setting, search Settings for “Background usage limits.”
Why a Galaxy phone may delay notifications
Samsung’s background usage limits can restrict what an app does when you are not using it. Samsung says apps in Sleeping apps may run intermittently, so their updates and notifications may be delayed. Apps in Deep sleeping apps do not run in the background; Samsung’s developer documentation says inactive apps in this state cannot perform activities such as notifications or updates. Samsung explains Sleeping apps, and its application-management documentation describes deep-sleep behavior.

Keeping an app out of automatic sleep can make timely alerts more likely, but it may use more background battery. Apply the exception only to apps where prompt notifications matter, rather than disabling sleep restrictions for everything.

- Open the battery controls: Go to Settings > Battery > Background usage limits. On some devices or software versions, the Battery screen may be nested elsewhere, or labels may differ. Search Settings for “Background usage limits” if the path does not match. Samsung’s guidance for sleeping apps and background usage limits varies by regional support page.
- Check the affected app: Open Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps. If the app is listed, select it and choose the option to remove it from that list. The exact control may be shown as an edit, minus, or removal action.
- Add a sleep exception if available: Open Never auto sleeping apps or Never sleeping apps, tap the add control, and select the app. Not every Galaxy model or software version offers the same list or label.
- Test the alert: With the app no longer listed for sleep, ask someone to send a test message or trigger the alert type that was delayed. Allow for the app’s own delivery and network conditions; this setting does not guarantee instant delivery.
Samsung’s menus and feature availability vary by device, software version, and region. Its Canada support page and Australia support page describe the feature, but the labels on your phone are the practical reference.

Check notification permissions and alert settings
Make sure Galaxy allows the app to notify you
Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, find the affected app, and make sure notifications are enabled. If the app has notification categories, check that the category for the missing alert is allowed and not configured to be silent. Samsung’s notification troubleshooting guidance includes these app-level controls.
Check Do not disturb and its schedule
In Settings, open Notifications > Do not disturb (the path may differ) and see whether it is on or scheduled for the times alerts go missing. Review its allowed-app or exception settings if you want selected alerts to come through while Do not disturb is active. This mode can silence notifications rather than delay their delivery, so distinguish a silent alert from one that appears only later.

Review Power saving and Data Saver
Check whether Power saving or Data Saver is enabled. Samsung identifies both as possible factors in notification problems because they can limit background activity or data use. Temporarily changing one setting at a time can help identify whether it is involved, but keep the battery or data trade-off in mind. Samsung’s troubleshooting guide covers these checks.

If notifications are still late
- Note whether all alerts are affected or only one app, and whether the issue affects every notification type or just a particular category. That distinction helps narrow down whether to focus on Galaxy settings or the app’s own controls.
- Update the app and check for a phone software update. Samsung includes app and software updates among its notification troubleshooting steps: Samsung notification troubleshooting.
- If only one app remains affected, review its own notification, background, and account settings, or contact the app’s support team. Galaxy settings cannot resolve every app-specific delivery issue or network-side delay.
