To keep a GPT Image edit focused, state exactly what to change, list the details that must stay fixed, and make one small change at a time. For faces, name the identity and features to preserve; for text, provide the exact wording and where it belongs. These instructions improve control, but they cannot guarantee that every unrequested detail will remain unchanged.
Why details can change during an edit
An image edit can alter more than its stated target. A prompt can guide GPT Image toward a local change, but it does not lock every other pixel in place. OpenAI also cautions that a selected highlight in ChatGPT Images may not precisely contain the edit, so changes can extend beyond the selected area. Treat both your prompt and any selection as guidance, then inspect the result. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Images help article explains area selection and its limits.

A repeatable method for focused edits
- Name the one intended change. Identify the specific person, object, text, or region. For a local edit, say “change only” that target instead of asking broadly to redo or improve the image.
- List what must stay the same. Be concrete: identity, facial features, expression, hairstyle, skin tone, pose, proportions, background, framing, lighting, camera angle, surrounding objects, or product shape. Include only the details that matter to the image and the requested edit.
- Use an area selection as a guide. In ChatGPT Images, select the target if useful, but also describe its location and the requested change in your prompt. A selection is not a guaranteed boundary.
- Make one change, then inspect it. Compare the result with your preservation list. If something drifted, request a targeted correction and repeat the important constraints in the next prompt rather than adding several new edits at once.
- Check the final image before using it. Look for unwanted changes to faces, spelling, legibility, labels, diagram relationships, product shapes, reference details, and anything outside the requested edit. OpenAI’s image prompting guide recommends inspecting results and reiterating constraints when they are not followed.
How to preserve a face in a portrait edit
Specify the change separately from the person’s identity and appearance. Avoid relying on “keep everything else the same”: it does not tell the model which details matter most.
Change only [specific clothing, object, or area]. Preserve the person’s identity, exact facial features, expression, skin tone, hairstyle, body shape, pose, and proportions. Keep the background, framing, camera angle, lighting, and all other objects unchanged. Do not add text, logos, or other elements.

Adapt the list to your goal. If the requested edit is to change the lighting, for example, do not also ask for the lighting to remain fixed. The prompt is a starting point, not a guarantee; inspect the face and surrounding image after each edit.
How to keep text, labels, and lettering accurate
Give the exact replacement wording in quotation marks and describe its location and appearance. Ask for no additional text. If a word or brand name has an unusual spelling, spell it out letter by letter as well.

Change only the wording in [specific location] to “EXACT WORDING”. Keep the label’s position, size, color, typography, surrounding layout, and all other image details unchanged. Add no other text.

Then check both spelling and legibility at the size where the image will be viewed. OpenAI recommends medium or high quality for small text, dense information, or multiple fonts; see its image prompting guide and GPT Image prompting guide.

Which GPT Image fidelity guidance applies?
Fidelity instructions depend on the model and workflow, so do not assume a setting applies to every GPT Image version. For the older GPT Image 1 workflow, OpenAI documents input_fidelity="high" as useful for distinctive details such as faces and logos. The current image prompting guide says not to provide that parameter for GPT Image 2 because those inputs are processed at high fidelity. Check the instructions for the model you are actually using: OpenAI’s high-input-fidelity example covers the older workflow.
OpenAI describes GPT Image 2.5 Flare as optimized for speed and GPT Image 2.5 Sunburst as optimized for quality, and says both improve precise editing and subject preservation. This is vendor guidance, not an independent numerical comparison of face or text preservation. If you can choose between them, compare their outputs on representative images and check which better meets your needs; there is no established preservation success rate or universally best choice in the cited guidance.

What the API image-edit endpoint supports
For developers using the image-edit API, OpenAI documents prompt-based editing or extension of supplied images. The reference lists PNG, WebP, and JPEG inputs, up to 16 images, and a 50 MB per-image limit for GPT Image model inputs. These are API details, not ChatGPT interface instructions; consult the current image-edit API reference before integrating them, as specifications can change.
