That can help you get moving, but it is not a cure-all. If low motivation persists alongside low mood, loss of interest, or difficulty functioning, seek support from a healthcare professional.
Why motivation can fade
Low motivation is not a character verdict. A task may feel too big or unclear, seem disconnected from what matters to you, or be competing with stress, exhaustion, limited resources, or a health concern. The right response depends on the obstacle; pushing harder is not always the answer.

Self-determination theory describes motivation as varying in how self-endorsed or externally pressured it feels. It also highlights three needs associated with self-directed motivation and well-being: autonomy, or a sense of choice; competence, or a sense that you can make progress; and relatedness, or feeling connected to others. An American Psychological Association (APA) overview reports that a 2022 meta-review assessed 60 meta-analyses of this theory. That figure reflects the breadth of the review, not the effectiveness of any single tip.

How to get started when you feel stuck
1. Name the obstacle without judging yourself
Ask what is getting in the way. Is the task vague, overwhelming, boring, or driven mainly by someone else’s expectations? Are you short on time, energy, help, or the skills to begin? A specific obstacle points toward a more useful response than blaming yourself for not trying hard enough.

2. Choose one small, meaningful action
Make the first step concrete and achievable: open the document and write one rough sentence, put your shoes by the door, wash one dish, or send one message. These are examples, not guaranteed techniques. The NHS advises against trying to do everything at once and suggests setting small targets that are easy to achieve. APA guidance on education also supports short-term, specific, moderately challenging goals in learning contexts; that finding should not be treated as a prediction for every adult or situation.
Progress on meaningful work may help sustain motivation. APA’s article “Rousing our motivation” quotes researcher Teresa Amabile: “It can be small, almost trivial, steps forward.” A small action may create progress, but it will not automatically make everyone feel motivated.

3. Decide when and where you’ll begin
Replace “I’ll do it later” with a specific plan, such as: “After lunch at my desk, I’ll work on this for ten minutes.” The UK Health Research Authority describes implementation intentions—plans that specify when and where an action will happen—and mental imagery as approaches being studied with people experiencing low mood. Its summary reports the study’s question and rationale, not results, so it does not establish that these methods work.

| The task feels vague | Choose a time, place, and short first step. |
| The goal feels driven by pressure | Look for a personally meaningful reason or a choice you can make about how to proceed. |
| You feel alone or unsupported | Ask a trusted person for company, practical help, or a check-in if that would be useful. |
| Low motivation persists with low mood or impaired daily functioning | Speak with a healthcare professional rather than relying only on productivity strategies. |

Having no motivation or interest can be one possible symptom of depression, but that symptom alone does not establish a diagnosis. The NHS advises contacting a GP if depression symptoms are present most of the day, every day, for more than two weeks. Its low-mood guidance also recommends seeking help if low mood lasts more than two weeks, is hard to cope with, or self-help is not helping. These are reasons to seek assessment, not a rule for diagnosing yourself.

For low mood, NHS guidance suggests manageable steps such as talking to someone, setting small targets, exercising, and eating regular meals. If symptoms persist or daily life is being affected, a healthcare professional can help you consider appropriate support. Behavioral activation is one treatment option for depression; it focuses on practical changes in activity and the links between activity and mood, and may help when depression has led someone to withdraw socially. It is a treatment to discuss with a professional, not a do-it-yourself prescription.
If you may be at immediate risk or need urgent help, contact local emergency services or an urgent mental-health service. NHS contact routes are specific to the UK; use the appropriate service where you live.
What persistence can—and cannot—tell you
An APA press release in 2019 described an observational study by Zainal and Newman that followed 3,294 adults using data collected in three waves across 18 years: 1995–1996, 2004–2005, and 2012–2013. Higher goal persistence and optimism were associated with greater reductions in symptoms of depression, anxiety, and panic disorder over time. The study does not show that persistence alone prevents or treats illness. Participants were mostly white, and slightly fewer than half were college educated, which also limits how broadly the findings can be applied.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe useful takeaway is not to push through at any cost. Choose a manageable action when it fits, adapt the plan when it does not, and seek care when persistent symptoms suggest you need more than a productivity adjustment.
