How to open and share Office files in LibreOffice
LibreOffice maps Microsoft Office files to its three main applications:

- Word files: Open .doc and .docx files in Writer.
- Excel files: Open .xls and .xlsx files in Calc.
- PowerPoint files: Open .ppt, .pps, and .pptx files in Impress.

- Open or edit the document in Writer, Calc, or Impress.
- Select File > Save As.
- Choose the matching Microsoft Office format, such as Word 2007–365 (.docx), Excel 2007–365 (.xlsx), or PowerPoint 2007–365 (.pptx), then save.
- If LibreOffice warns that some formatting or features may not be preserved in the selected format, review the warning before confirming.
Set Office formats as the default for repeated sharing
If you routinely send editable files to people using Microsoft Office, set the relevant Office format as the default save format. In LibreOffice, open LibreOffice > Preferences on macOS or Tools > Options on many other systems, then go to Load/Save > General. Choose a document type and its preferred save format. Menu wording can vary by operating system and LibreOffice release; the official format guidance describes the available choices.

A default affects new saves, not the format of every existing file. Check the filename extension and selected format when saving an important document.
Keep a working copy and verify important exports
For a document you may need to revise later, retain the original Office file or save an OpenDocument copy as your working master. LibreOffice’s native formats include ODT for Writer, ODS for Calc, and ODP for Impress. You can then create a DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX copy when an Office user needs to edit the file. LibreOffice also provides a Document Converter Wizard for batch conversion of Office files to OpenDocument formats; converting a folder does not establish that each file’s layout or behavior is intact.

For important documents, reopen the exported copy in the Office version your recipient uses and inspect the parts that matter. For example, check page breaks in a report, formulas and totals in a workbook, or animation and media in a presentation. This is a practical precaution: LibreOffice’s feature guidance describes areas where conversion differences can occur, but does not prescribe a formal validation procedure.
What to inspect after converting a document
Conversion risk depends partly on the features a file uses. LibreOffice’s Microsoft Office compatibility guidance identifies these areas for review:

These are potential differences, not a claim that every listed feature will fail. LibreOffice’s help states: “The amount of reformatting that can be expected is proportional to the complexity of the structure and formatting of the source document.” That is the guidance’s general rule, not a guaranteed prediction for a particular file.
Treat macros as a separate migration task
Microsoft Office and LibreOffice use different macro environments. Office macros commonly use VBA, while LibreOffice macros use Basic code built around a different API. LibreOffice says that, with a few exceptions, the environments cannot run the same macro code. Some Excel VBA scripts may run when the VBA feature is enabled, but scripts that rely on Office-specific objects or methods may require changes.

Before switching a macro-dependent workflow, keep using the original Office environment until you have verified that the required automation works in the converted file. LibreOffice also provides settings for retaining or deleting VBA macros when loading or saving Office documents; see its macro and format compatibility guidance.

Choose the format that fits the collaboration
Use an OpenDocument format for an editable master in a LibreOffice-centered workflow. Use DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX when an Office-format file is expected or the recipient needs to continue editing in Microsoft Office. LibreOffice lets you select the format for an individual save or set a default. Its Writer 26.2 guide notes that the selected ODF version can matter when sharing with editors that use older ODF versions; see the Writer Guide 26.2 section on working with text.

If the recipient only needs to read a document whose appearance should remain fixed, consider sending a PDF as well as the editable file when appropriate. LibreOffice can export documents to PDF, as explained in its PDF export help. A PDF is not a substitute for an editable Office file when the recipient needs to keep working on it.
Decide how much checking a file needs
LibreOffice’s compatibility guidance does not provide a conversion-success percentage or a quantitative compatibility score. Use the file’s features and the cost of an unnoticed change to set your review effort:

- Simple document, low stakes: Open it in LibreOffice, save in the needed format, and make a quick visual check.
- Complex layout or calculations: Check the specific formatting, formulas, charts, and other features the recipient will rely on, preferably in the target Office application.
- Macros or embedded objects: Test the workflow or object behavior directly; appearance alone is not enough.
- High-cost or fixed presentation: Retain the source and validate the exported file before relying on it. If editing is not required, include a PDF where suitable.
