What “in sync” means for ChatGPT and Google Docs
A connected Google Drive account can give ChatGPT access to Docs that account is allowed to open, subject to the app, actions, and workspace settings available to you. That live connection is different from an administrator-managed Drive index, and neither means every existing chat or generated file automatically updates whenever the source Doc changes. In practice, treat the Google Doc in Drive as the source of truth. ChatGPT can work from an accessible document and, in supported configurations, create or edit a native Google Doc. But if the document changes after ChatGPT has read it, do not assume the earlier conversation now reflects those edits. Retrieve or reopen the current source before asking ChatGPT to continue.

Set up a reliable edit-and-refresh workflow
- Connect the right account. In ChatGPT, connect the Google Drive app using the Google account that can open the source Doc. Confirm that your workspace allows the app and the actions you need. The available controls can vary with your account and workspace settings. Google Drive app setup
- Identify the source document. Ask ChatGPT to work from the specific Drive Doc, rather than relying on pasted text or an earlier chat summary. State whether you want it to reference the document or update the original.

What to do when ChatGPT seems to have stale content
- The Doc changed after you discussed it: retrieve or reopen the current Drive source, then ask ChatGPT to work from that version.
- You cannot see an edit action: check whether the Workspace app is enabled and connected, whether your workspace administrator permits the action, and whether your Google account has edit permission.
