For a consistent YouTube Live store promo, use one rights-cleared music track in OBS and enable its Loop setting, or arrange multiple cleared tracks in an OBS VLC playlist with Loop Playlist on and Shuffle Playlist off. Test the transition before going public, then monitor the stream. The essential first step is confirming that the music license covers livestreaming and the relevant territories: YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and a match can interrupt or terminate the broadcast.
Confirm the music is cleared for livestreaming
Use music the store owns or music with a license that explicitly permits the intended livestream use and territories. YouTube makes the provider responsible for having the necessary rights for live content, including music rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. Those rights may also matter for the archived stream. YouTube’s livestream terms set out this responsibility.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. If it identifies a match, the stream may show a placeholder, be interrupted, or be terminated. If you have licensed third-party music, ask the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; having a license does not by itself ensure the stream will avoid an automated interruption. YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance explains the process.
- Check that the license specifically covers live streaming, the territories where the stream will be available, and use in an archived recording if you keep one.
- Keep the license, invoice, written permission, and any allowlisting confirmation with your promo notes.
- Do not treat “free” or “royalty-free” as proof that a track is cleared for this use. Read the actual license terms.
YouTube Creator Music is not a live-stream music solution: YouTube says it does not currently support licensing for live content. A license or revenue-sharing option for an uploaded long-form video does not establish permission to use a track in a livestream. YouTube points creators to its Audio Library, original music, or third-party music whose license has been checked. Creator Music availability and limitations and YouTube Audio Library guidance provide more detail.

Choose a playback setup that fits the promo
| Setup | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| One local file in OBS Media Source | A simple, repeatable music bed | Enable Loop and make sure the track ending and restart sound acceptable. |
| VLC playlist source in OBS | Several tracks in a planned sequence | VLC must be installed. Enable Loop Playlist; turn off Shuffle Playlist when a predictable order matters. Test the order and transitions. |
| Third-party music service or catalog | A store that needs music it does not own | Verify livestream permission, territory and archive coverage, Content ID handling, and whether the channel can be allowlisted. A generic “royalty-free” label is not enough. |
Set up a single looping track in OBS
- Choose a local audio file that is covered by the rights you verified. OBS Media Source supports MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV audio. OBS Media Sources documentation lists supported formats.
- In OBS, open the scene used for the store promo. In the Sources panel, select + and add a Media Source. Create a new source, name it clearly, and confirm.
- In the Media Source properties, select the local file. Enable Loop, then apply the change. Keep the source in the promo scene that will actually be live.
- Use the OBS audio mixer to set a stable music level. This is a manual workflow check, not automatic normalization by OBS or YouTube.
- Preview the scene and listen to the stream output. Let the file reach its end and restart so you can judge the repeat transition before relying on it for the promotion.
Set up a playlist when the promo needs several tracks
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS needs it for the VLC Video source to appear.
- In the promo scene’s Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video Source. Add the music files in the order you want viewers to hear them.
- Enable Loop Playlist. Leave Shuffle Playlist off if each session should follow the same sequence.
- Check the playlist order and listen through track changes and the playlist wrap. The available loop controls do not establish that arbitrary files will transition gaplessly, so test the specific tracks and setup.
OBS documents the playlist controls in its VLC Video Source guide.
Test and monitor the live output
- Before the public promo, run an unlisted or otherwise private test if that suits your setup. Check that music reaches the viewer-facing output, not just your local monitoring.
- Listen at a track ending or playlist wrap, and check the OBS audio meter. Confirm the music source remains active in the scene you intend to use.
- During the public stream, monitor both audio and video quality and watch YouTube Studio for warnings, claims, or interruptions. YouTube recommends continuously monitoring encoder streams. YouTube’s encoder-streaming guidance covers monitoring.
- If YouTube identifies a rights match, follow the platform notice and contact the rights owner about permission and Content ID allowlisting. Do not assume that restarting the music source resolves a rights issue.
Troubleshoot interruptions and inconsistent playback
- The music stops after one play: Check that Loop is enabled for a Media Source or Loop Playlist is enabled for a VLC source, then test the end again.
- The playlist order changes: Turn off Shuffle Playlist and verify the file order in the VLC source.
- No music reaches the stream: Confirm the source is in the active scene, check its level in the OBS mixer, and listen to the actual stream output during a test.
- A licensed track triggers a YouTube interruption: Check the Studio notice and ask the rights owner whether the channel can be added to its Content ID allowlist. A license and automated matching are separate issues.
- A transition has a pause or an abrupt restart: Test the specific files and playback setup, then choose tracks with endings that work for the loop. The documented loop controls do not guarantee gapless playback.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a computer or OBS running at home, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera.
