How to Keep App Data in Sync with TanStack Query Invalidation

TanStack Query invalidation marks selected cache entries stale and can refetch active queries. Learn when to use it, how key matching works, and when to update cache data directly.

In TanStack Query, query invalidation marks matching cached queries stale so the app can refresh data that may have changed. It does not replace cached results with new server data. Active matching queries are refetched in the background by default, helping related views converge after an update without making a performance guarantee.

What query invalidation changes

A query cache can contain several views of server data: a detail page, a list, or a filtered result. After a successful change, some of those cached results may no longer reflect the server. Calling queryClient.invalidateQueries marks the selected queries stale. TanStack Query’s guide says this stale state “overrides any staleTime configurations being used in useQuery or related hooks.” In other words, a matching query does not remain fresh merely because its usual freshness interval has not elapsed.

Invalidation is a signal about freshness, not a cache edit. It does not insert the mutation response into cached data; a later refetch can obtain the updated server result. The intended smoothness is coherent displayed data after changes, not a measured or guaranteed speed improvement. TanStack’s Query Invalidation guide documents this behavior.

When to invalidate after a change

Use invalidation when an action may have made one or more cached views outdated. A common place is a mutation’s success handler: once the server confirms an update, select the cached query or family of queries whose results could be affected. For example, updating one task may make both its detail view and the task list stale. A change to a task’s title may affect the list, while a change to its status may also affect status-filtered lists.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The appropriate scope depends on how the application organizes its query keys and which views depend on the changed data. Invalidation does not determine those relationships for you; the key filter expresses them.

Choose the query-key scope deliberately

The current TanStack Query API uses an object filter. A key prefix can select a family of related queries; a longer key narrows the selection; exact: true prevents a prefix from also matching longer keys.

const queryClient = useQueryClient()

const mutation = useMutation({
  mutationFn: updateTask,
  onSuccess: async (updatedTask) => {
    // Refresh task detail and task-list queries that use the "tasks" prefix.
    await queryClient.invalidateQueries({ queryKey: ['tasks'] })
  },
})

With keys such as ['tasks'], ['tasks', 'list', { status: 'open' }], and ['tasks', 'detail', 42], invalidating ['tasks'] intentionally covers the family. If only the detail view for task 42 should be selected, use its more specific key:

await queryClient.invalidateQueries({
  queryKey: ['tasks'],
  exact: true,
})

That exact filter does not select the list or detail keys above. These are current object-filter examples, based on the current QueryClient reference and current invalidation guide.

What happens after invalidation

By default, matching active queries are refetched in the background. The current API lets you choose which matches are refetched using refetchType; the available behavior includes active, inactive, all, or none. Setting refetchType: 'none' marks matches stale without starting a refetch through that invalidation call.

await queryClient.invalidateQueries({ queryKey: ['tasks'] })

// Mark matching queries stale, but do not refetch them now.
await queryClient.invalidateQueries({
  queryKey: ['tasks'],
  refetchType: 'none',
})

The promise resolves when the refetching settles, or immediately when refetch type is 'none'. This can matter if subsequent work should wait for the selected refetches to finish. Invalidation is not a guarantee that every match sends a request immediately: disabled or static queries are not refetched by refetchQueries. Consult the QueryClient API reference when choosing a refetch type or relying on promise behavior.

Invalidate, or update the cache directly?

Invalidation is useful when the server’s resulting state should be fetched again, or when several related views may need recalculation. If a mutation returns the complete, authoritative result needed by a particular query, an application can instead update that cache entry directly. That avoids waiting for a fetch for that entry, but requires the code to update the right cached data consistently. The official guide presents targeted invalidation alongside direct cache updates; neither approach is universally right. Choose based on whether the mutation result is sufficient and how many cached views it can safely maintain.

Current and v3 syntax are different

Examples above use the current object-filter form, such as invalidateQueries({ queryKey: ['tasks'] }). TanStack Query v3 documentation shows positional arguments instead, such as invalidateQueries('todos', { exact: true }). Do not mix the signatures: use the API form for the installed major version, checking the v3 invalidation guide for v3 syntax and the current QueryClient reference for the current API.
