You can keep playing an Xbox save on another platform only if that specific game supports a route between the two versions. Xbox cloud saves support continuity in eligible Xbox experiences, but they do not provide a universal export to Steam, Epic Games Store, or other storefronts. Before buying another edition or deleting local data, check the game’s official support information for the exact source and destination platforms.
First identify where the save started and where you want to use it
A save made on an Xbox console or in an Xbox cloud-play session is not automatically interchangeable with a save made by the Windows Xbox app or a third-party storefront. The game’s implementation determines whether progress can move between them.

Check the game’s official FAQ or support page for terms such as cross-save, cross-progression, linked accounts, and save migration. Confirm both ends of the route—for example, Xbox console to Steam, rather than simply whether the game has “cloud saves.” A cloud-save feature may sync only within one platform or storefront.
- Source: Xbox console, Xbox cloud play, or the Windows Xbox app.
- Destination: Xbox PC, Steam, Epic Games Store, or another named platform.
- Account: whether both versions use the same Xbox account or require a separate publisher account to be linked.
- Method: automatic cross-save, an official one-time export/import, or no supported migration.
If the game’s support information does not clearly confirm your source-to-destination route, ask its publisher before purchasing another version.

What happens if you stay within Xbox
Eligible Xbox Play Anywhere games
For a game that supports Xbox Play Anywhere, Xbox says progress—including saves, add-ons, and achievements—travels between supported Xbox consoles, PCs, and handhelds when you sign in with the same Xbox account. The Xbox Wire announcement of August 28, 2025, said more than 1,000 games supported Play Anywhere at that time; the count can change, so check the current listing for the title. On a supported device, sign into the same Xbox account and give the game time to sync before closing it or switching devices. Xbox announced a Game Save Sync Indicator rollout across PC and handheld experiences on January 21, 2026, to show cloud-save status. Wait for syncing to finish when the indicator is available. Xbox PC app and cloud-play history
Xbox said in July 2025 that cloud-playable console games, including games played through Game Pass, could appear in the Xbox PC app’s library and play history, helping players find and continue games within the Xbox ecosystem. Steam Cloud stores saves and other user-specific data for games that support it. That does not mean Steam can read or import an Xbox save: Steam Cloud is a storage and synchronization feature for the relevant Steam game, not a general Xbox-save converter. Cross-storefront save sharing requires the game itself to support it. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit documentation describes save sharing and PC cross-save as developer implementation work, including publisher configuration and initialization in game code. In practical terms, a common title name, a publisher account, or cloud saves on both versions do not by themselves prove that the versions share progress. Microsoft Learn: Game Saves
What to do before the Game Pass version leaves
- Find the exact game’s migration instructions. Use the publisher’s official support page and look for the platform pair you need, not just a general cross-progression claim.
- Check account and edition requirements. Confirm whether you must link a publisher account, use the same Xbox account, or own a specific edition on the destination platform.
- Sync the current save. If you are using an eligible Xbox experience, stay signed in and wait for cloud synchronization to complete. Use the Game Save Sync Indicator if it appears on your PC or handheld.
- Follow only the game’s official transfer steps. If the publisher documents an export/import process, follow its instructions for the correct platforms and versions.
- Verify the destination save before removing anything. Launch the destination version, check that the expected progress appears, and preserve the original save until you have confirmed the move.
If no official migration route is documented, do not assume that manually copying files, using a USB drive, or buying external storage will work. Save locations, formats, account binding, encryption, and import support vary by game; the platform documentation cited here does not establish a universal consumer transfer utility.

If you buy the game on another storefront
A separate Steam or other storefront copy may let you keep playing after a Game Pass listing changes, but it restores access to the game, not necessarily to your existing progress. Purchase only after confirming that the publisher supports migration from your particular Xbox source to that destination version. A platform’s own cloud-save feature is not proof of cross-platform compatibility.

Without the game’s name and intended destination, it is not possible to determine whether your save transfers, whether a separate publisher account is required, whether an export is available, or whether the destination edition is compatible. The useful details to check are the exact game, where the save was created, and the platform where you want to continue.
