To recover an Owncast-to-YouTube stream, first find which connection failed: your encoder may have disconnected from Owncast, or Owncast’s outgoing relay may have disconnected from YouTube. Check the relevant logs and stream health, confirm the encoder’s retry settings, and verify that YouTube has not ended the broadcast. Recovery is not guaranteed, so rehearse the full setup before relying on it.
Understand the two connections
An Owncast-to-YouTube setup has at least two links to monitor. Your broadcasting software, such as OBS, sends video to Owncast. A separate relay or encoder then sends the feed from Owncast to YouTube. A failure on either link can interrupt what viewers see, and the right fix depends on which one failed.

- Encoder to Owncast: OBS or another encoder loses its connection to Owncast.
- Owncast to YouTube: the outgoing relay or encoder loses its YouTube connection.
- Process or broadcast ended: the encoder process stops, the Owncast server or FFmpeg encounters a problem, or YouTube ends the broadcast.
Owncast accepts RTMP on TCP port 1935 by default, though the port can be configured. Its stream key is accepted on the /live/ path. Keep the stream key private; do not include it in screenshots or public logs. Owncast’s broadcasting documentation explains its ingest setup and stream health information.

Use compatible video and audio settings
Owncast recommends H.264 video, AAC audio, and a keyframe interval of two seconds for broad compatibility. These are compatibility recommendations, not a guarantee that a disconnected stream will reconnect.

Keep bitrate within real network and server capacity
Owncast identifies an unsustainable bitrate, an unstable network, and server-side FFmpeg problems as common causes of disconnection. Its example guidance includes 1280×720 at 30 fps at 3000k, and 1920×1080 at 30 fps at 4500k. Treat those as suggested values, not universal requirements: the available upload capacity and the server’s ability to process and relay the stream determine what is practical. If either is overloaded, lower the incoming quality, reduce output variants, or both.
Check OBS retry controls
In OBS, inspect the output settings for Automatically Reconnect, Retry Delay, and Maximum Retries. These controls govern retry behavior. The OBS interface catalog does not establish current default values, exact retry limits, or successful recovery in every failure case, so check the values in your own installation rather than relying on assumed defaults. OBS’s English interface catalog lists these labels.

Check YouTube’s broadcast lifecycle settings
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm that the correct stream URL and key are in use, then review the current auto-start and auto-stop settings before going live. YouTube documents reusable stream settings and custom stream keys; reusing a setup can also carry over its metadata and settings, so confirm those are appropriate for the new broadcast. Do not assume that restarting an encoder will reopen a broadcast YouTube has already ended. A community OBS forum guide says that enabling YouTube auto-stop removes the ability to reconnect later and continue that broadcast without scheduling another one. Because that guide may be outdated, verify the current behavior and controls in YouTube Studio. The OBS forum guide is community guidance, not a guarantee of YouTube’s current behavior.

Troubleshoot in this order
- Identify the failed leg. Check whether OBS lost its connection to Owncast, Owncast’s outgoing relay lost YouTube, the encoder process stopped, or YouTube ended the broadcast. Review the relevant encoder logs and Owncast’s Stream Health or admin information.
- Inspect retry behavior. In OBS output settings, check Automatically Reconnect, Retry Delay, and Maximum Retries. If the encoder reached its retry limit or did not retry, correct the settings and test again; do not assume retries can recover a broadcast that YouTube has ended.
- Check network and server capacity. Confirm that the connection is stable and can sustain the sent bitrate. Check Owncast and FFmpeg health. If the system is overloaded, reduce incoming quality or output variants to fit available network and compute capacity.
- Verify YouTube’s destination and state. Confirm the stream URL and key, then check the Live Control Room to see whether the broadcast remains open. Review auto-start and auto-stop before restarting the encoder.
- Test recovery under controlled conditions. Use an unlisted or otherwise controlled broadcast, briefly interrupt the connection, and note whether the encoder reconnects, whether YouTube keeps the same broadcast open, and what viewers see. Also confirm how to end the broadcast manually afterward.
Owncast points operators to stream health and its disconnection troubleshooting documentation for diagnosing stream problems. No universal YouTube outage duration after which a broadcast ends is established here, so test the behavior of your actual configuration rather than planning around a presumed grace period.
