First check whether Xiaomi has ended updates for your exact Redmi tablet: support is model-specific, and the tablet’s name alone does not establish its status. If it is on Xiaomi’s end-of-life (EOL) list, app scans, a screen lock and careful habits can reduce some risks, but they cannot replace missing Android or firmware security fixes. Move banking, work access and other sensitive activity to a device that still receives security updates.
Is your Redmi tablet still getting security updates?
Find the full model name and region, then check the tablet’s Android version, Android security update date and Google Play system update status in Settings. Google says update schedules vary by device, manufacturer and carrier; menu labels differ across Redmi models. A recent Google Play system update does not, by itself, show that the tablet’s full firmware is current. Google’s Android update guidance explains where to check version and update information.

Next, look up the exact model on Xiaomi Security Center’s EOL list. Xiaomi says its security updates generally include patches and vulnerability fixes. Its policy says updates are typically maintained for at least two years after a model’s first shipment, with longer support for some models; that is not a guarantee for every tablet. Xiaomi also says listed EOL products no longer receive software or firmware updates, including security updates. It notes that it may issue a fix for a very serious vulnerability, but that exception is not routine support.

What should you do when Android updates stop?
Install any official update still offered
Connect to Wi-Fi, make sure the tablet has enough battery and free storage, and use its built-in official updater. Follow the on-screen instructions. Requirements vary: Xiaomi’s REDMI Pad Pro FAQ recommends at least 50% battery for its update process, while its Pad SE update FAQ calls for sufficient free storage. Do not treat either model-specific recommendation as a universal threshold. Google also cautions that older devices cannot always run newer Android versions.
If Xiaomi lists the exact tablet as EOL and no official update is offered, repeatedly checking or installing app updates will not restore manufacturer firmware support. Do not download unofficial firmware on the assumption that it is an official fix.

Leave Google Play Protect on
Google says Play Protect checks apps when they are installed and periodically scans the device, including apps from outside Google Play. It may warn about or remove harmful apps, and Google recommends keeping it enabled. On the REDMI Pad Pro, Xiaomi’s example path is Settings → Security status → Google Play Protect; enable “Scan apps with Play Protect” and “Improve harmful app detection,” then run a scan. Use conservative app-installation habits
- Use Google Play as the default app source.
- Avoid APKs from unfamiliar websites, app stores, links or messages. Play Protect scanning does not make every sideloaded app trustworthy.
- Remove apps you no longer use, especially ones that request access unrelated to their purpose.
Protect access and keep a usable backup
- Set a PIN, pattern or password screen lock rather than relying on swipe-only unlocking. Use a short automatic lock timeout if available.
- Hide sensitive lock-screen notification content if someone else might see the tablet.
- Back up important data and confirm you can access the backup from another device. What gets backed up varies by device and app. Google recommends a PIN, pattern or password to help protect backed-up data.
These steps help limit app, account, loss and data risks; none supplies missing operating-system or firmware fixes.
Is rooting or installing an unofficial ROM a safe workaround?
Not by default. Google says modified Android versions do not receive automatic Google security updates and may compromise built-in protections; apps on a modified system may also have unrestricted access to data. A custom ROM can only be judged on evidence for the specific tablet, build and maintenance history. Without that, rooting or installing an unofficial operating system is not equivalent to ongoing official support.

How do you keep using an old tablet safely?
No checklist can make an EOL tablet fully secure. If you keep one, use it for lower-risk, non-sensitive tasks, keep its app set small, avoid unknown app sources, leave Play Protect on, and maintain a backup. Do not use it as the primary device for banking, work access, password management or other sensitive accounts if you can move those activities to supported hardware. An EOL listing does not mean the tablet has been compromised; it means routine manufacturer fixes are no longer provided.
When should you replace an EOL Redmi tablet?
If Xiaomi lists your exact tablet as EOL and it handles sensitive information, moving those uses to a supported device is the clearest practical way to reduce unsupported-firmware exposure. You may retain the old tablet for less sensitive uses if you accept the remaining risk.

Xiaomi’s current listing gives the Redmi Pad 2 a security-update EOL of 2032. That date comes from Xiaomi’s model listing checked in 2026; support entries can change and availability, model variants and rollout timing depend on region. Treat it as one example, not a universal recommendation, and verify the relevant regional entry on Xiaomi’s current support list before choosing a replacement. Xiaomi’s global HyperOS 3 rollout information also includes the Redmi Pad 2, but rollout information does not establish that every regional variant has received an update.
