If the PC shuts down, OBS cannot reconnect until the computer boots; restarting automatically after power returns depends on the computer’s BIOS or firmware. After power is restored, check OBS and YouTube Live Control Room separately—an encoder reconnect does not by itself guarantee the event is live.
What can—and cannot—keep a stream online
There are three separate links in the chain: power for the PC and network equipment, an active internet connection, and a working encoder feed that YouTube has made live. A UPS can bridge a limited outage for equipment plugged into its battery-backed outlets. OBS automatic reconnect can help if the computer stays on but loses its connection. Neither can guarantee continuity if the outage outlasts the UPS, the internet connection fails, or a source such as a camera does not recover.
YouTube also distinguishes an encoder connecting from the public event going live: its workflow includes an incoming preview and a separate Go live action. Settings such as auto-start and auto-stop affect how the event behaves, so do not assume every interruption will resume the same broadcast automatically. YouTube’s documentation does not establish one universal reconnect grace period for every event configuration.
Prepare the setup before the broadcast
1. Put the necessary equipment on UPS battery backup
Connect the streaming PC and the modem, router, or other network equipment required for the stream to battery-backed outlets—not outlets that provide surge protection only. A UPS supplies temporary power, and its runtime depends on the combined load, the particular unit, and battery condition. Choose capacity based on your actual equipment and the length of outage you want to bridge; there is no reliable one-size runtime figure.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
APC’s manual describes battery-backed outlets as providing power for a limited period during an outage and identifies a computer and critical peripherals as appropriate loads. Read the APC manual excerpt on battery-backup outlets.
2. Enable OBS automatic reconnect
In OBS, open Settings → Advanced and enable Automatically Reconnect. Confirm the label and location in your installed OBS version, since they can vary. This setting is for a connection interruption while the computer and OBS remain operational; it cannot start a powered-off PC or guarantee that a disconnected camera will recover. OBS documents this setting in its Studio Overview Guide.

3. Review the YouTube event settings
Before the stream, check the event’s stream settings, including auto-start and auto-stop. YouTube says reused stream settings carry those selections over, so review them when you reuse an event or settings. The encoder workflow uses a stream URL and key, then waits for an incoming preview before the creator selects Go live. For the current controls, see YouTube Help’s Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
4. Check whether the PC can start when power returns
A UPS restoring power does not necessarily turn a shut-down computer back on. Some systems offer a BIOS or firmware option to power on after AC power is restored; support and menu names vary by computer or motherboard. Check its manual before changing firmware settings. APC explains this caveat in its guidance on whether a Back-UPS automatically restarts after utility power returns; Schneider Electric also describes the BIOS support and configuration requirement.

Recover the stream after an outage
- Restore power and boot the PC. If the computer remains off after power returns, start it manually unless its supported power-on-after-AC-loss setting is configured.
- Confirm OBS is running and connected. Check that the intended scene and sources are present and that OBS reports a connection. If OBS is disconnected while the PC is on, automatic reconnect may help. If it does not, use OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance and check network equipment and connection conditions.
- Check camera and audio sources. Verify that they are producing output in OBS. A source that lost power may need separate attention; there is no universal camera-recovery setting established for every device.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and inspect the event. Confirm that YouTube receives the encoder feed and shows a preview. An OBS connection does not prove the event is publicly live.
- Use Go live if the event is not live. Follow the event’s current Live Control Room workflow and select Go live when appropriate. YouTube’s documented encoder process separates sending the feed from confirming the preview and starting the public broadcast.
Troubleshoot by the layer that failed
| What you see | Likely issue | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The PC has no power | OBS cannot run or reconnect without a powered, booted computer. | Restore power and start the PC. If it does not start automatically, check the system’s documented firmware options or turn it on manually. |
| The PC is on, but OBS is disconnected | The encoder’s connection to YouTube or the network was interrupted. | Give OBS automatic reconnect a chance; if needed, check the network and follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance. |
| OBS appears connected, but YouTube is not live | The incoming encoder feed and the event’s live status are separate steps. | Check the Live Control Room preview and event state, then select Go live if the workflow calls for it. |
| The camera or another source is missing | The source may not have recovered after losing power. | Inspect the source in OBS and restore or reconnect it as needed. Source recovery depends on the device and setup. |
| The outage continues beyond the UPS backup period, or the internet equipment loses service | The UPS cannot supply indefinite power or guarantee that the internet provider’s service remains available. | When power and service return, work through the PC, OBS, sources, encoder feed, and YouTube event checks in sequence. |
What a UPS can—and cannot—promise
A UPS is a bridge, not an unlimited power source. The right choice depends on your equipment’s combined load and how long you need backup; battery age and the outage itself also matter. Protecting only the PC is not enough if the modem or router loses power. Even with both on battery, an outage longer than the available runtime—or an internet service interruption—can stop the stream.
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving threshold, not a promise that a stream will recover after a PC reboot or an encoder interruption. See YouTube’s encoder workflow.
