Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a 24/7 YouTube stream from OBS, use CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, then choose codec, resolution, frame rate and bitrate to fit both YouTube’s guidance and the upload capacity your connection can sustain around the clock. For H.264, YouTube’s recommended video bitrate is 14 Mbps at 1080p30 or 17 Mbps at 1080p60; those figures are recommendations, not guarantees that your network or encoder can hold the stream continuously.
Recommended OBS settings for a continuous YouTube stream
There is no universal OBS preset for every computer and connection. Start with a conservative output your encoder can handle continuously, then validate it with the actual scene, audio and network you will use.
| Setting | Starting point | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube lists constant bitrate for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Consistent keyframes can also help YouTube’s quality selector transition between output formats smoothly. |
| Codec | H.264 for a widely supported starting point; use H.265/HEVC or AV1 only if your OBS build, encoder and workflow support it. | Bitrate guidance differs by codec, and available encoder options depend on your computer and OBS build. |
| Resolution and frame rate | Choose a combination your encoder and sustained upload can support; 1080p30 is a sensible starting point when 60 fps is not needed. | Higher resolution and frame rate increase the demands on encoding and upload capacity. |
| Audio | For stereo, 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps are YouTube’s listed recommended settings. | Set and test the audio path along with the video; continuous streams can fail in ways that a silent or static test will not reveal. |
YouTube’s other listed advanced settings include square pixels, progressive scan, 2 B-frames, 1 reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR and 8-bit SDR. For 5.1 audio, YouTube lists 48 kHz and 384 kbps. These are platform recommendations; the encoder controls available in OBS can vary by system.
Choose a bitrate that balances picture quality and stability
The following are YouTube’s minimum and recommended video bitrate values for common settings. They are platform guidance, not a promise that a particular network or encoder can sustain the rate indefinitely.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 4 Mbps | 10 Mbps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
For 1440p, 4K, 480p or 360p, consult YouTube’s full encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions table; its recommendations vary by codec and frame rate. Do not treat the H.264 minimum as the recommended rate: for example, 5 Mbps at 1080p30 is the minimum listed, while 14 Mbps is recommended.
Measure upload speed on the connection that will carry the stream, and leave capacity for fluctuation and other network use. YouTube recommends 20% headroom and says total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload bandwidth. On a shared connection, other users and devices can reduce what OBS actually has available. If the recommended rate leaves too little headroom, lower the bitrate and consider reducing resolution or frame rate rather than risking repeated drops.

Configure OBS and YouTube in a deliberate order
- Prepare the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a stream using an encoder, then open Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the platform-side workflow.
- Protect the stream key. Copy the stream key from the YouTube stream setup into OBS’s stream configuration. A key connects your encoder to the live stream, so treat it like a password: do not publish it or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- Set the output profile. In OBS, choose the video encoder and the bitrate appropriate for the codec and resolution you selected. Set rate control to CBR and keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Use the YouTube table above as a reference, not as a substitute for testing.
- Set video and audio together. Choose the intended output resolution and frame rate, then check that the encoder can sustain them. Configure audio for the intended stereo or 5.1 workflow and verify that the correct sources are active.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts data to and through its servers. HLS is another ingestion option with additional setup requirements and a different latency and encoder workflow; do not switch protocols just to follow a generic preset.
- Preview and test before relying on the stream. Start the encoder and inspect the incoming feed in Live Control Room. Test with a representative scene that includes the motion and audio the live stream will actually contain. YouTube’s guidance is explicit: “Make sure that you test before you start your live stream.”
- Go live and observe stream health. Check YouTube’s stream health indicators and messages, and keep watching audio and video quality after launch. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend testing on the real setup; its computer live-streaming tips also cover preparation, preview, backup-encoder failover where applicable, local archive growth and ongoing monitoring.
Latency and DVR are viewer-experience settings exposed in Live Control Room, not OBS bitrate controls. Review them in YouTube’s live stream settings guide if those choices matter to your audience.
Plan for continuity, not just a successful start
A stream that connects successfully can still fail later because of changing upload capacity, encoder load, a computer restart, power loss or a network interruption. OBS settings cannot guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation, and YouTube’s guidance does not specify a universal OBS reconnect value or uptime promise.

- Test at the times and on the network conditions when the stream will run; shared bandwidth can vary.
- Watch for encoder overload, dropped frames, muted or missing audio, and YouTube stream-health messages.
- If you use a backup encoder, test the failover before depending on it. YouTube’s operational guidance recommends checking that workflow when applicable.
- If you record a local archive, verify that it continues to grow and that local storage has room.
- Keep the stream key private and confirm the intended stream is accessible before leaving the setup unattended.
Troubleshoot the most common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Stream health reports unstable or insufficient upload | The total stream bitrate is too close to available upload, or the connection is shared or fluctuating. | Run a speed test on the streaming connection, reduce bitrate and/or output demands, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. |
| Video stutters or frames are dropped | The network may not sustain the output, or the encoder may be overloaded. | Check OBS and YouTube health messages; test a lower resolution or frame rate and confirm the chosen encoder can sustain the workload. |
| Viewers cannot change quality smoothly | Keyframes may not be consistent at the recommended interval. | Set a consistent 2-second keyframe interval; OBS notes this can help YouTube’s quality selector move between formats. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder feed | The stream key or ingestion configuration may be incorrect, or the encoder may not be connected. | Verify the correct key and protocol in OBS and Live Control Room. Replace the key if it was exposed, then update OBS with the new one. |
| Picture works but audio is missing or wrong | The wrong input may be selected, muted or routed incorrectly. | Check OBS audio sources and meters, then repeat a test with the same audio path intended for the live stream. |
| Stream starts but stops when the computer or connection fails | The local encoder depends on the computer, power and home or office connection remaining available. | For a local workflow, plan and test recovery or backup encoding. For unattended playback of uploaded recordings, a cloud service is a different workflow option. |
OBS versus cloud playback for a 24/7 channel
OBS is the right approach when you need a live production controlled by a computer, with its scenes and inputs. If the goal is instead to keep uploaded recordings playing as a YouTube live stream without leaving a computer running, StreamNeo is the first alternative to consider: it loops videos from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Every quality up to 4K 60fps is streamed as uploaded at one price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded-video playback to YouTube, not a camera-based live production. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
